Now, I'm totally okay with people bashing this shot.... Or else I wouldn't have posted it on DPreview :) lol

But especially from anyone here who 'almost' likes it, please take this shot and tweak it anyway you want to. Although I am pretty happy with this shot, I'm always open to new ideas.

Lest anyone ask for the original, that would be a little tough, as this was made from 28 images 2x2x7 (I know, I didn't need them to be 7 deep, I had set the camera for this earlier when the sun was straight in my face)

Sorry you can't change the exp length... I know some guys prefer sharp water droplets, and a few might prefer cotton clouds. This was pretty close to what I prefer though.

I think the falls are cut off too abrubtly at the bottom.

And the modern building distracts from the natural beauty.

Since you asked. :)

It's a nice image. Not sure that you needed to HDR the original image. :-)
Thank you stretchman ☺️

Well, I'm kind of an HDR freak. I know a lot of guys don't like an image if they can tell it's an HDR (especially on DPr) but for myself, I usually don't care for it 'unless' I can tell it's an HDR 😀 lol

As I say though, this probably didn't need 7 shots for each section. 3 would have probably done it.

Another good shot Chris! There are a few spots of sensor dust in the sky which I'd clone, and there are a couple of hotspots in the clouds and on the waterfall which I'd also get rid of I think. Other than that I like it!

I might be tempted to add a little vignetting to it to draw the eye into the waterfall more?

It's really flat...I could only download the thumbnail on my phone, but here's a rough example of how selective processing can control visual flow and add some pop.

Nice image. But the horizon doesn't look level.

Lan, you have a great eye, and now I'm kind of ashamed of myself :) lol I'm usually good at catching the dust specs, and yes, a couple hot spots on the top left....

I actually did try adding some vignetting... but was undecided ?

Thank you :)

Streak, that doesn't look bad at all. It would be great if you could do this same PP on the larger file whenever your at home, as I'd love to be able to see these side by side.

I'm imagining though, I might go with your treatment, but scaled back just a bit.... Or should I say, somewhere between yours and mine.

Hmmmm. I usually use the in-camera leveling. It could be a hair off, but it could also be one of those shots that is straight but doesn't look it ?

I've posted about this ion the past... Should you tilt a shot slightly crooked, to make it look straighter ? Or, sometimes you can warp it in a certain way too...

I really appreciate all the positive critique :) And here's the thing, with every one of your replies, I agree anywhere from somewhat, to completely !

Where have all the jerks gone ? :) lol

Chris, thanks for posting any photos within 100 miles of where you live. I've mentioned this before but Tahoe is one of my favorite places.

We've hiked miles and miles out there but it was before digital and my knees told me they didn't like to hike any longer. Have you made it to Wrights Lake area or Mt Tallac?

Have you been to Sand Harbor near Incline Village?

Well, I've shot Mt Tallac.... But not from the bottom, not the top 😀 lol

Haven't been to Wright's Lk. Yet. Will look that up now. Not to Sand Harbor yet either.

Thank you for these ideas ☺️

Chris,

If you don't mind telling me do you enjoy hiking a lot and photoing along the way or photoing and hiking some? There's a difference. Back in the 1980's, 1990's and early 2000's I prefered hiking and making some photos but that was before digital. I can no longer hike but still have the memories and the wonderful views and trails. If you like hiking 4 to 7 miles a day I have several suggestions that are scenic. Just let me know or PM me.

I've got to get my knees replaced late this year and early next year and before I get the 1st one done, I'm going to bring my adult daughter to Tahoe (to chill and see some shows and enjoy the scenery-- no hiking) and then to Yosemite (she's never been) and then up CA Hwy 49 thru the gold country. Tahoe area is one of my favorite places to visit.

Chris, if you find a spot where you like what you see, it’s necessary to return when the light is right. There is no amount of processing that can make up for time of day and the optimum light.

I had heard from relatives that Rose HaNikra, on the Mediterranean coast border between Israel and Lebanon, was truly beautiful - so I timed my arrival for about 5pm to catch the effect of the setting sun on the scene, picked my location and lens...and waited.

I could not find a location where I could get what I wanted without the plastic in the foreground. I have images I cropped it out.

Same with Meteora, Greece - I planned my arrival for the same time of day, and waited:

Sometimes you need to get up early and scout, and pray you discover some elements that give you the depth as well as light you need:

Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

I visited the Western Wall in the daytime, saw the light issues, and came back in the evening close to sunset. As I was surveying the scene, I saw this woman and child set up to pray, quickly moved, and got this, a mix of failing daylight and the artificial lights on the wall.

If the light is right, you have a chance. If it isn’t, not much you can do in post can save you.

W3PYF, yes, of course, lighting is everything.

I have been to Glen Alpine Falls during times with better color...

But also I find that 'sometimes' going at times considered to be not so good (or even terrible) can sometimes produce fantastic shots, especially since the advent of HDR.

I always heard 'never' shoot directly into the sun, it should always be towards your back. But then I took this shot at Yosemite, with the sun straight in my face, and it turned out to be one of my favorites, and best sellers :)

And this one, can "only" be shot at about 4:30 (if you want the rainbow), in spite of the fact it doesn't get dark until about 7:30....

Anyway, you have some nice shots there too :)
