Tell me I'm crazy for wanting to get a 6D, when I have a 6DII

I owned a 6D for about 3 years, then moved on to other brands, before coming back to Canon very recently with a 6D II, which I love so far.

The deals on the original 6D are getting very good, like the recent Adorama deal with the body and printer for $899 after rebate. I sell the printer/paper for $100, I end up with a 6D body for $800 net.

I put a 40mm on that 6D, and that becomes a very lithe and not too pricey travel setup, along with taking with me in places I might be a bit reluctant to with a newer 6DII, which is probably worth about double the 6D right now.

Of course, in the grand scheme of FF DSLRs, the 6DII is not THAT expensive, so maybe I shouldn't be so wary about using it wherever, whenever.

Thoughts?

If you’re worried about theft, just have insurance on your camera. Renters or home owners insurance should cover your costly items even outside your home, but that depends on your insurance provider if they cover international travels. Just make sure the premium won’t increase.

I think the 6d Mark II is the perfect travel DSLR for the enthusiast. Far superior AF to the original 6D which can help for fast moving moments and just snapping a quick shot without focusing with the centre dot and recomposing.

Furthermore, I think you’re changing gear way too often. First the 6D, then a new system all together, now the 6d ii and then thinking about the 6D again? Seems very odd to me, dare I say even obsessive.

You are crazy. Just because there are some screaming deals on the 6D doesn't mean it's a great deal if you don't need it. If you need a back up camera, go for it. Even if you need a backup camera, is the 6D the best? Personally I would prefer a FF and an APS-C combination.

+1 for being crazy to add a 6D to a 6D MkII. We picked up our 6D MkII on our way into Yellowstone, and as we hadn't had an opportunity to sell the 6D at that stage we shot it with the 17-40mm wide angle on it, and put the 24-105 on the 6D MkII. The 7D MkII had the 100-400mm on it most of the time.

When we were at Old Faithful and had staked our position, rather than have to get to the car and back I was able to swap lenses around as one body was a Crop one. The 100-400 was too close on the crop body, so went onto the 6D, and the 17-40mm went on to the 7D MkII so all bodies could shoot it when it blew. I was busier than a 1 legged butt kicker as I also had a Canon HD Video and a Sony 4K Action Camera, and assumed the others would help. So I ended up shooting 2 DSLR's, had the Canon HD Video on the bench shooting and the SONY 4K on a headband! But I did get some awesome footage.

In short, a crop/FF combo will give you more lens choices and you'll never regret it.

You're not crazy. I've shot with the 6D for 4 years as well, lost mine about 3 weeks ago in a river, and just bought a new one at Best Buy for a steal. I could have upgraded to a newer camera, but when I look at my shots I've gotten with the 6D, I can hold off a little longer.

You're not crazy.

Would it help your photography to switch,again...? Likely no...remember its about the photos not the minutiae.

The only reason I would get a 6D would be if I needed the low light/high ISO capability that the 6D excels at.

i just think it's a bit unnecessary that your backup travel cam for a full frame camera is another full frame camera? Are you afraid one will break?

There was a similar deal for the canon SL2 with kit lens from focus camera, $399 after rebate and $299 after you sell the printer. Much smaller and lighter, and you get a crop if needed.

Makes a lot of sense - I picked up the A7II for that reason (assuming you mean as a second body).

After rebates, I got it brand new for £799 - a perfect backup or second body to the A9 (it's the same MP output), and I'll be a lot more comfortable using it for underwater shots.

I had bought a 1DxII after selling my 1Dx and my 5DIII. I told myself that was all I needed...but, I bought a 5DIV (solid decision) and just recently bought a 5Dsr and this was after I told myself that the 5DIV would do until the 5DsrII came out....HA! How many cameras can I put up to my eye at one time? ONE!

My wife uses a 7DII and is content with "her" camera.

So there you go.....not crazy! Buy it! Life is short!

You are not crazy, it was a bargain deal, and I want one too, but it is over now from what I can see. BB has no more in stock, Adorama deal has expired too.

Yup, certainly overkill.....but then my lens are also overkill...I suffer from lack of control....guilty as charged!
