Canon 5DS $2699, 5DSR $3344 are these models a flop?

Im kind of thinking the 5DS has been a flop. The 5DSR has been more successful but I think it still might be a flop. I usually dont see models being super discounted on Ebay so soon after production. Usually it takes a few years and we start seeing the discounts.

The above cameras are the foreign variety which do not have a USA Warranty.

If you want to get a 5DS with USA Warranty, you will only pay $3099

Typical end of summer sales, along with the stronger US dollar. That said, locally, the shop I by my gear from has said there has been far less interest in the new Canons as opposed to the Nikon D810 and new Sony models.

There is no discounting going on with mainstream dealers in Europe at all so far for either model and the 5DsR is still only available to pre order whereas you can already buy the Sony A7Rii of the shelf and over the internet in some European countries. Go figure! :-)

The same thing happened to the 7D2... started at $1800 and could be had on sale for $1149 now via eBay. Same with the D810... currently at $2099.

to lower the A7RII price...fast.

What do you mean "Canon doesn't allow discount prices to be advertised"? Surely that's not right. You see deals advertised all the time.

(But maybe not yet for the 5DS/R in Europe.)

In the U.K. all the dealers are moaning that Canon wildly under-estimated the demand and they have multi-week waiting lists. Plus cheapo imports from the far east always happen. It's only if the dealers who get local stock sell them cheaply there might be an issue, and I don't see any sign of that in Europe. plus all the people I know who bought them are delighted, so I think it'll do just fine.

When you post hyperbolic subject lines, you add to the noise created by the Nikon and Sony fanboys and DPR.

The 5dsr was just released and Canon is rolling out slowly due to poor 5ds sales. The 5ds is the one not selling. Many big ebay dealers buy overstocks from dealers. Notice the 5dsr is not much discounted from the original price compared to the 5ds.

Canon does not allow advertised discounts with authorized dealers (much like Apple, etc) unless Canon is doing a promotion or drops price themselves.

The 5ds sales has taken Canon back a bit, IMO. I believe the 5dx may get announced in september...but wont get released until next year. The new 1dxii will be the focus now.

Hopefully the 5dx will be a major step from the 5diii.

Have you given up on your insightful predictions about future releases?

The only flop with my 5Ds is the pair of flip flops I would wear for a future swimsuit shoot.

I get inspired every time I see legendary sports photographer Walter Iooss, Jr.

BTW, is that a 24-70/2.8 L II lens?

Cheers,

José

The 5ds (sr) are not flops by no means. They may not have the 'buzz" tha Canon expected. However, I would guess the cameras production cost, themselves are just a fraction more (if that) than the 5diii. The 5diii has more than met any production goals long ago and is close to the end of lifecycle (note price drops). The 5ds-sr is just a hot rod version. Just like GM putting a big engine, special edition badges on models that are near redesign.

Basically...pure profit

It appears to be one of the 24-70s, probably the II, without a hood. A hood would truly identify the lens.

The indoor shooting at the beginning of the video looks like he is using the 50L or 85L although when I blink, there appears to be knobs coming from the sides of the lens suggesting a TSE.

I'm sorry but what's your source for Canon being taken aback by the sales? Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

The Canon Pro dealer I was at today (in London) had supplied all the batches of cameras they got so far to pre-orders. Their first order with unallocated bodies is coming in three weeks, but they suspect they may be sold by the time it arrives.
