Thought I'd start a new thread for this as theres nothing on Google about it.

This can happen. This is 5Diii with the YN565EX and focus assist lamp. I have similar image with 6D and a different YN565EX. The lenses used were 85 1.2 and 50 1.2. Relevant? Yes as it deosn't happen with a 24L and a 35 Sigma.

I now need to buy a canon speedlite for ETTL work.

I can reproduce this any time i like with the two lenses, two bodies and 2 copies of the Yongnuo YN565EX. It leaves a clear malfunction of the LED focus assist lamp on the image.

6D and 50 1.2 at f2

5Diii with 85 1.2L II at 1.2

I don't have those lens, but I have the flash and a 6D so I will be testing to confirm.

A bit freaky and not at all what you want when shooting a wedding but at the same time it does look like something out of the Terminator.

It sorta looks like the flash didn't fire (at least in the bottom three photos and only the side light in the first image), but the strobe's targeting lights are showing up. Any chance this only appears when the camera shoots ambient light but the flash doesn't fire?

Anyway, weird. Let us know what you find!

That was the idea, to make it look as if im not using flash, i bounced it from the white ceiling drape behind me. These are raw files sooc.

I just got a 565EX in the mail today. I saw your thread so I figured I'd give this a try...... I do indeed see the AF lamp in my 6D shots. :( That really sucks.

I popped the flash on my 7D and see no sign of the little red dots though.

I suppose the only silver lining here is that you can turn off the AF lamp. I wonder if there is any solution to this.

But did the flash actually fire for exposure? In a few, it looks like it may not have based on the subject in focus and second person in front of the main subject being slightly darker when perhaps they should be lighter if the flash was bounced from behind you. I can't tell as all the EXIF has been stripped. A clue might be in the EXIF. Good Luck

Can't you just turn AF assist off?

Now, flash sends focusing pattern and camera supposed to focus but because lens focuses so slow it does not register with the camera yet you trip the shutter and take a picture. Are you in CF or S mode?

I used to have 85mm F1.2 L and every time it focused I could drink a cup of coffee so I replaced it with Sigma 85mm f1.4

the flash absolutely did fire! No doubt and the exif says it did also.

My opinions are my own and not those of DPR or its administration. They carry no 'special' value (except to me and Lacie of course)

Two things.

This doesnt happen with a Canon speedlite. Its reverse engineering at fault.

what is CF and S?

Also

The 85 1.2 is speedy enough on the 5DIII :)

What lens were you using on the 6D? And 7D?

oh yes, that is a known yongnuo 565 problem.

the yn 568 ex2 does not have this problem

The 6D had a Canon 24-105mm F4 lens on it.

The 7D had a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS HSM lens on it.

The light clearly turns off quicker when the flash is attached to the 7D.

Continuous Focusing or Single Focus.

My was on 1Ds2, 5D2 and 7D. Very slow. Sigma 85mm F1.4 twice as fast.

With those bodies and lenses why cut corners with a cut price flash unit? I can imagine what canon will advise you to do.....;)
