So much for my prosumer camera theory!

Guys, You know that saying: "A shroud has no pockets".
You can't take it with you, so spend it while it can buy you enjoyment.

Mind you, I have stipulated in my will that my 1Dn must be buried along with me. With an extra fully charged battery, - you never know what photo ops may arise.

And yes, I will post to dpr.

Well, at least you are talented and knowledgeable about the 'craft'. I've seen your work and I think it's truely wonderful AND inspiring.

The best I can boast is a few sold private portraits and a couple of lucky publications, so for me to justify the purchase is a bit off the wall, but I've recently come into just a bit of extra money, and I just don't think I can resist indulging myself. So beat me up; I don't care. I'll have the camera!

I like to shoot everything, so I figure I'll just cut to the chase' as they say, and go for the gusto. I am going to hold off just for a little bit though, as I've written before, until the dust clears and the real reports are in.

Gary,

Great post and very apropos to my situation as well. I won't even get into all the gear I have used and traded, dumped, bought back, etc. The short answer to your question is that it never ends.

DSLRs have become the new high end stereo. Years ago, when I was into the "high end" the incremental improvements in sound came at very stiff price-the price increase being totally out of proportion to the incremental improvement in sound. We have reached the same level with the "high end" camera. I thought I was the only "nut" but I am glad to see many others here emptying their wallets as well.

Incidentally, here is a shot I recently took with an 828. Sometimes it is not the camera, but the moment.

Of course, it won't do the low light of your Canon gear.

But for a carry around it'll do your back a lot of good, and there are some splendid lenses to buy:
16-18-21 WATE
21 f2.8
24 f2.8
28 f2
35 f1.4
50 f1.4
75 f2
90 f2
135 f3.5

and of course there is the tri-elmar for travel.

They might break your bank balance, but they won't break your back.
;-)
best wishes

I agree. I think it is a very good camera that produces great results.

Gary,

You are SO right. A couple of years ago I was thrilled with my 6+ MP hp P&S and the beautiful enlargements I have hanging in my office, home, and homes of others. Nice work and I did all the framing and matting. My hobby life was complete until I read a digital camera magazine and remembered the good old days of 35mm and that I could reproduce that and more!!

$2600 for the body!! Oh my god. Of course I didn't know too much and I ordered it from a questionable dealer that called me and made me feel stupid and $5000 later I had 24-70L, very expensive card reader. 3 filters two cf cards, a bag since passed on, etc. Lots of experience at lots of expense. Then I foind out that I really am in over my head and the thing gets duxt on the sensor to boot.

Thank God for DPReview that has been a life and wife saver. Albeit not very good at keeping me out of the B&H website and my best friend "bill me later". I always pay it off early. My wife knows the UPS man personally from numbers of visits. LOL. I pretty happy now with a 100mm,2.8 macro,17-40L,70-200L 2.8 IS with tc 1.4x and the new tripod, remote cable timer, 580EX,Lowepro roller that is too small. DOES IT EVER STOP!!!!! I hope not.

That's one of the reasons I finally splurged on the Canon 500mm f4 IS L.

-I know that there is no lens waiting in the wings to tempt me in the super-tele range. :)

Seriously, though... Because of the very thinking you've identified...I decided some time ago to spend the bulk of my photo money on lenses that would keep me happy for a loooong time. Sticking with L lenses has done that, for the most part, though I did sell my 100-400 (and kinds wish I still had) and (cough) 24-70 2.8 (blasphemy!)...plus a couple exceptional non-Ls that are top-quality optics--the 100mm 2.8 macro, and the 50m 1.4.

If you buy quality lenses...they'll stay with you for a long time and "out-please" compared with bodies...which will come and go.
My current lens kit is:

500mm f4 L (as of this morning)
70-200 2.8 IS L
100mm macro
24-105 f4 IS L
16-35 2.8 L
50 1.4
1.4x
2x

I have other items (flash, bodies, etc.), but the above list of lenses will stay with me for a loooong time...come what may (1D4, 1D5?).

Good luck finding one... :(

I'm getting mine tomorrow, but I was 14th in line at a large shop that has over 300(!!) on the pre-paid waiting list! They received a grand total of...20 from Canon this morning. While 20 is a LOT more than most shops received, it'll be a looong time before they fill the other 280+ who are waiting for theirs...much less anyone who orders one today. Hope you find one sooner than seems likely. For me, it was important, as I'm going to Africa in a few weeks with my new 500 f4 L. Hopefully you don't have a pressing need...
