So much for my prosumer camera theory!

To avoid addiction it is essential to stop perusing the lens forums. I really wonder if we are taking better pics for all the new equipment we have acquired. Maybe its time to take stock – pun intended!

I have golfed in a couple of hacker tournaments when I was in the insurance business and sometimes would go to some par three courses (where irons are all you really need). There is much to love about the game - the beauty of the courses and the fact you can play against yourself (always trying to beat your best score), and for us competitors that is appealing. So I have golfed enough to know i would love it and that is why I am staying away from it! Ahhhh, when I retire in two years though....

But a least you get some pictures to show for the money.

Anyone every calculate their per "wall-hangable print" cost? I am afraid to.

Before the Mark III was introduced I admit I did think a little about a future 1Ds. If noise performance was on par with the 5D, if a slightly faster frame rate, and a crop factor were part of the upgrade I could have considered it as the camera would meet various needs. As it is my 5D and soon to have Mark III combo covers what I feel I need.

There are so many aspects of photography and many do interest me. The studio type work that needs the resolution of the 1Ds does not. I am never in the position where very large prints are required. It is very possible my view of the 1Ds could change. A dream of mine is to eventually do gallery work. If the upgraded 1Ds produces an image quality that is noticably better than an upgraded 5D, then this could be a future purchase. I am planning on upgrading the 5D but maybe I should hold out to see the differences between the future 5D and 1Ds.

Right now I am concentrating on gear needed to make money without compromising gallery work if I run across scenes that are worthy of hanging on a wall. I think I can produce very sellable prints if content is interesting using the 5D and/or 1D Mark III. As I am in the position to travel more and more I will have more opportunites to take nature shots or other scenic type shots.

I have even thought about large format camera for this, but I am hoping in a little more than two years the 1Ds upgrade, maybe even the upgrade after the next one, will produce large prints on par with larger format cameras of today. A dslr is way more practical than a MF camera for many obvious reasons.

Oh crud, now I am actually thinking of a 1Ds!!!

You should investigate, via public course pro shops, the possibility of ladies day events, etc.; I know they exist. Also, you can get on the internet and meet up with gals in your area to play golf with.

I'm assuming you feel uncomfortable playing with the guys; you shouldn't but probably do. Yes, there are guys that can't stand to see a woman on the golf course but they are in the nearly insignificant minority. Most golfers enjoy playing PERIOD and gender in the foursome is not an issue.

FWIW my absolute favorite golf buddy is my friend's wife; he isn't much fun on the golf course but she is GREAT! When the four of us get together she and I are always talking about "golf swing theory", new shafts, head designs, etc., and the only thing my friend (her husband) talks about is food (well, eating food). :-) I wish my wife would play golf but she plays tennis (all the time) and has no time for an additional sport.

SEARCHING FOR A BETTER SELF PORTRAIT

Thanks. I am slowing making my move out to NW Montana as I own a home on Flathead Lake and will be moving there (from S. FL). The 828 has served me well out there. That was just one of those special days, rarely experienced, in mid-April last year, with the sun just perfect to get the mirrored reflection in Lake McDonald of the awesome Glacier National Park mountains.

As to audio gear, it is addictive, when you start with the wires, changing out pre-amps, speakers, etc. to eke out that last bit of detail. The analogy to the current crop (and more to come) of DSLRs is so correct. We all spend time blowing up our images to 3000% looking for that edge blur, noise, etc. similar to the days I remember moving speakers a quarter of an inch to get that extra detail. What can I say, I love the game and am a "poor victim" of all this stuff.

I envy you. I know all about "electronics and equipment" but can't take a picture worth a damn. The nice thing with digital (and in the "old" days, I never thought digital could ever replace film just as I never believed digital would ever replace good ole records) is that I can snap off a ton of shots hoping to get one that I can brag about.

... make money with your hobby, and spend only that on your equipment!

That is what I do. But I'm married. My guess is you are not married. If you were, you would have figured out that you need to spend and equal amount of money on your wife as you do your camera equipment.

Eric,

You are correct about spending some of that photography income on our spouses. We are going to Hawaii for two weeks in November and much of the trip will be financed by photography income. What doesn't go for trips goes to pay credit card balances.

The other secret is to not let her get interested so she does not know what all this costs! She keeps seeing boxes being delivered but thankfully does not ask what they are (maybe she is afraid to ask!). I guess as long as we keep paying our bills she has no reason to be suspicious!

Hi Gary and Mark,
If you read some of her other posts the grey's bug her and she
would love nothing more to simply paint them black. Now if there
was an easy way to shrink the lenses!

How are you, Lovely way to start the day, thanks for the laugh!! I do most certainly find "grey's" a challenge Gary, am researching paint colours as we speak. To cut the expense, the primes look soooo good, small, fantastic IQ, sharp, fast - black!!!!, ahh but no IS on some of the cheaper ones, won't know until I gain the practical experience, I will buy my first prime, probably the 50 1.4 and keep researching for range option.

I think for the above reasons, I'm heading down Mark's direction, having debated at length with Gary too. Have seen alot of Joe Mama's beautiful pictures and style and Dirk Vermeire's amongst so many others, I think that's my style, I love low light and was so surprised at the fantastic photos I get out of the 24-105 at night in my lounge room with only a low corner ambient light, totally amazed that if it can pick up more light than even I can see, at f4 (of course the IS helps) then what can the 50 1.4 do!!! (when it focusses & %$#) and dream of capturing some really good photos on my Tango dance nights, eyeing up the 50 1.4, 100 2.

I'll pop in a link of Tango photos for your amusement, taken in Buenos Aires (not mine): Taken with the 5D and 50 1.4.These photos are a lot darker than mine with the 24-105 at f4 - weight, what weight :), besides it's great for keeping those muscles in shape!! :)

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=22301973

For range, etc the 200 2.8 and TC, as a cheaper attempt at some range, to capture sailing, football, portraits, sunsets etc. I keep backing and forthing and lurking and reading and going nuts. Later adding 400 5.6 or 300 or yadda it goes on. How are you going with the 24 -105 Gary? :) Zooms or primes, so many wonderful reasons and negative reasons on both sides!!!! If you don't get zooms, you need more lenses!

I think that I have a very critical eye, so I might just have to come to terms with this and stick with primes and all this coming from someone who has only read and researched and has not got the experience and isn't wealthy!!!!! Thanks for sharing your story Mark, I certainly identify with it.

PS> Well now Gary how did the lovely big smile, with the rose in between thy lips, go down...............? :) Oops, it's out there now!!!

Very kind regards,
Joanne

Then that competitive nature in me wanted me to produce quality
sports photos as good as the guys sitting on the court in front of
me
When does it stop!!!!!!!!!
It stops when amateur photographers realize that the reason those guys sitting on the court in front of you take quality pro sports photos is because they are quality pros, not because they bought some expensive equipment.

Then some of them should be using Sony 828s and other similar cameras, right, because gear doesn't matter? Hmmm, I have not seen that though, instead I see 300 2.8 lenses on 1D M2s and similar equipment that I now own.

I started out taking shots for fun but it has led to earning a nice second income and a second career when I retire in two years. I know this non-traditional career path may bother some, but the bottom line was the equipment and desire to learn how to use it led to earning a good reputation even among the pros I now sit beside or stand beside at games (several of the guys I shoot beside at games have become friends).

The wonderful thing about photography is if you get an opportunity to prove what you can do, it can lead to making money. No degree required or formal training required (yes, it is helpful). A lot of knowledge is needed, but there are resources available that can help us self teach ourselves. This is one of the reasons so many of us are on this forum, we hunger to learn and there are always many willing to share their knowledge. After all, as you said, it is the quality of the work that matters.

..trying to get the skill to justify the gear..

Start selling and stop buying. :^)

In the last 2 weeks I've sold a 24-70L and a 50L F/1.2. Earlier this year I sold an original 1D and a 300L F/2.8 IS and my 2nd 85L.

Today I shipped a 200L F/1.8 and tomorrow I should get an overnighted check for my 1Ds2.

What does this leave me? My son has my 10D on "loan". All that's left to take pics with is my Oly E10!

I'm almost cured. :^)
