Canon Brand Loyalty and the DMC FZ50

............ The only
thing that lets the package down is that the Manual is on CD-Rom
.......
If that is true, it's another item of disappointment in the release of the FZ50. How is a potential customer supposed to find information on the characteristics and functioning of the camera at the store counter. You couldn't rely on a salesperson with a question since they would not have had a manual to familiarize themselves with either. And to expect that "every" customer has a PC to use it in is .... well all I can say is "No paper manual "in-the-box" is very shortsighted of Panasonic and unfair to the consumer; --- and cheap!" I'm sorry to hear of this. (JMHO - YMMV).

Thanks for use of the soapbox.

... who sold his Pro1 and misses it sadly, I would find myself another Pro1 first. The FZ50 has several technical advantages over the Pro1, but do not expect comparable picture quality.

... perhaps jb2u was short-changed a hard copy manual, and I owe Panasonic an apology.

Ordered yesterday from UKDigital at 11.30 and camera arrived 10.30 today.
Excellent service and very knowledgable sales staff.

Straight out of the box Im very impressed with the build quality and the balance of the camera in your hand.

Mine came with a UK manual book as well as the PDF version on CD.

Batteries are on charge, so time to cut the grass whilst im waiting.

Now i must renew my PBase account and start posting pictures again.

i c in your signature EOS 20d. amazing that you owe such a product from Canon and are still considering fz50. i had an fz30 sold it and going for fz50 myself.

i came very close to ordering a canon 400d/xti. then i realized to get IS and zoom on that xti as compared to the Fz50 will take another 1000 dolalrs. thats just insane unless you love that brand name or are into pure slr scene.

Now if 400d had a built in IS i might consider it. but agian this should tell you some of the features of FZ50. zoom, menus, solid built, decent pics amazing macros and a Lovely forum here :-) so my conclusion is that you will not regret making a choice and taking you wallet off on FZ50 :-)

Greetings,

You are quite correct and your point is well taken.

I stand corrected.

I would think you need to convert to Extra class (amateur radio)
Hi Ray...
I could get an Extra ticket (amateur radio) but it's unique being
Advanced... They aren't minting any more of these licenses as far
as I know...

Thanks for letting me know there is a Manual for it, im' calling round to the shop were i got the camera from and ask him for one.

I'm happy with what i'm getting form the camera here is my first piccy post from five day's ago.

Hi. I bought my FZ50 a month ago and I'm quite happy with it. Mind you though, I just started this hobby so seeing the cons about the camera hasn't really affected me yet. I haven't decided to enter any contests or print poster sized pics but the pictures I've taken so far came out very nicely.

The main reason I bought the camera is because I needed something as a starter for myself. I pitted it against the Sony R1 and the Rebel XT. I just figured that the Sony R1 was a little too heavy on both my wallet and in the case. The Rebel XT would've been nice but I'm a beginner to even comprehend or make full use of changeable lenses. I needed something that I could first master and outgrow to actually get into the DSLR world. The FZ50 really answered my questions...well...the FZ50 and you guys.

In any case, goodluck on your shots and post as much samples. I like learning from everyone's inputs and shots.

Regards,

SInce last Christmas my (extended) family have really deserted Canon; for some of these people brand loyalty wasn't an issue it was a religion. It all began with the purchase of my FZ 20 as a replacement for a very much loved Canon T90; to see the reaction of very photo savvy people to a camera that took on any challenge and won was amazing. The only way to do justice to our exodus from Canon is with a list;

Penny---Canon DSLR to FZ 30
Liz--------Canon1Sis to FZ 50
Gavin----Canon SLR to Canon video to Panasonic VDR-D250
David----CanonT90 to FZ 20 to FZ 50
Amy-----Canon A75 to my FZ 20
Andrea-first camera FZ 20

Now it won't end there because two more family members are looking at new cameras, one has test driven my FZ and has to have one as an SLR replacement, the other has a Fuji and has just toured China with Penny and her FZ 30, I believe the side by side reviews at the end of day were very difficult if not unbearable for Joan to Fuji owner. I know this situation within a family must be very unusual, but we all love our cameras and take photography very seriously.

Just shut up and shoot....Dave

Well, I've effectively gone from an RB67 and T90 to an FZ50 (although via a Nikon 990 which was best at the time I bought it after a long break from photography).

Will be looking to buy a top-end Canon or Nikon DSLR if my renewed interest in photography continues though (but REALLY want live preview for candid and overhead shots, so still waiting).
