Hello Panasonic Users,

I want a camera that acts just like my old Powershot Pro1,that has good range great optics and a good zoom.

I’ve waited for ever for Canon to get their finger out of their @rse and produce a Pro2 but I don’t think that will happen.

So ..... i have my finger on the "Check Out " button and I am considering a FZ50.

I’ve read the review on Dpreview 4 times and it seems to be just what i want, although I do suffer from brand loyalty hence the reason for me waiting 2 years for a Pro2.
Had enough waiting and after the following quote from Phil:

And so, to sum up; for the serious user the FZ50 is without doubt the best equipped, best specified and best handling 'bridge camera' on the market today, and under the right conditions it produces superb output. It is a rewarding and enjoyable photographic tool that - once you've learned its quirks - offers a compact 'all-in-one' solution to anyone wanting a huge zoom range without lens changing and all that bulk.

I think this camera is for me..?

Just a footnote from me:

When I brought the Pro1 in the UK it cost me £800 GBP and after 1 year I sold it for £400 GBP.

The Pany FZ50 brand new is £389 and from what I read in the review is far superior to the Canon products currently available.

So come on guys & dolls help pursued me to hit that button and buy this FZ50,

I’m not a troll just a keen hobby photography who wants a good Prosumer.

Welcome Malford. I thought I was a Nikon loyalist until I bought my FZ50. I'm having to much fun with mine to get my D70 out. It doesn't pay anymore to be a brand loyalist, there's far to many good cameras on the market to make that feasible.

if one must break that nasty ole brand loyalty habbit... I do believe the Pani is the way to best do it... The Fz30 got me out of the Oly ranks....

Be forewarned though... If the 28mm wide end of that Pro 1 was your favorite aspect of it.. You may be dissappointed with the 35mm wide end of the Fz's... However, a mere $100 Wcon 08 can bring you back to that sacred 28mm on the wide end or ya can even opt for the Wcon 07 or Kodak or for quite a bit more cash the Raynox pro6600 or Pani's own to widen it even more to around 24mm or so....
So go ahead & push that "Pay Now" button....

I just thought my old Kodak camera was something until I bought my first Panasonic, the FZ10. It has been the most versatile camera and the easiest to use of all the cameras I've ever used. I've toyed with Nikons, Canons. Kodaks, and Casios, but the Panasonic takes the cake as being the best overall. The Canons and Nikons have always had menus that are hard to navigate but have produced good images. The Kodak I owned had a super easy menu system, superb color but was very limited on what it could do. Buy the FZ50 and your brand loyalty will be the last thing you think of each night as you go to bed. You'll be busy dreaming of tomorrow and that next superb image you'll capture with your new Panny. I ordered the FZ50 myself this weekend and can't wait.

Been following this thread for a week or more and my money is going on the FZ50, hope i can post some pic's as well as what i have seen, wish me luck and i wish you the same if go for it m8.

Well- I have about 15 cameras-including the D70 and the D200 and 16 lenses including the 24-120 Vr and 18-200 Vr. PLus- H1, FZ5 and TZ1.
And LX1.

I tried the FZ50 very early on for $650. I loved using it and then sent it back. I figured I had plenty of cameras (C8080, A2, 8700,F30...and more).

I ordered a Zigview (live preview thing) and promised myself to use the D70 'more'.

I really am not as good as Anne- meaning I can not twealk that good a shot and I do like the wide end a bit more--I would rather (9 or 10X zoom
and 28 or even 24 mm wide).

I also love to crop more than most...

I am not good at processing.

I don't shoot RAW...

I don't print large-or even print much at all.

But it was so responsive to use. Such a pleasure in my hands. The IS works so well and I really need it-I seem to have shaky hands.

So, with the new pricing, and since I have SD cards galore, am a non-professional, I just said what the heck...

The Zigview was just over $300. It is being returned.

Also, don't laugh, this is a heck of a nice group of people. If I didn't have a Panny I would own one just to be here-the folks are that nice!!! Really!

About the only contender was the Sony R1--and my hands are too shaky for the size without IS. Or, the new Fuji coming out. I have the F30 and E900 and I figure my DSLRs cover the high iso bases....

Me? I bought an FZ50 and I like it a lot... Better than my Canon S3/IS? Yes!

Are my bird photos better now than when I use my Canon digital SLR's or my 100-400L/IS or 500L/f4/IS lenses? No, but an FZ50 is a lot easier to lug around (and pay for)... And, the photos are pretty good even with a teleconverter on the front of the lens...
I like using this camera...

Advice? Brand loyality might make sense when camera, lenses, flash, etc. are all part of a system and one won't work right without the other... But this is a stand alone type gizmo...

this FZ50,
This ain't the Sony forum, we are not trying to sell anything ;)

As long you shoot RAW (and can live with the 3.5 sec write time) I'm SURE you will love it.

In JPG it's a matter of taste. Some times the VenusIII engine messes up fine low contrast detail and colour noise => smearing. But the NR set to low, it doesn't seem to be a great issue up to medium sized prints.

Make sure you buy it somewhere with a generous return policy. Then you can't go wrong with the FZ50, gl!

Not laughing.

This is what i have thought too Linda, and looking at your Profile it looks like you know more about Photography then me :)

Most of what I have learned has come from the gracious people on these forums.

I consider myself an enthusiast and this is my first hobby and I have a 35 year year old daughter so you do the math :-)...Yesterday was her birthday. Even I can't believe it.

Come visit at http://www.quirky.smugmug.com

I am just having fun taking unusuall shots and, of course, testing out cameras.... I may know more on some things but I certainly know a lot less on others!

Good thing I hold down a job full time for now...don't smoke or drink. The new models are coming too fast, even for me!

This is my 'vice'...and I think I do the buying part (cameras) to excess. Of course, I bargain shop for just about everything else!!!!

So, when I see what a pack of cigarettes goes for, I think boy, now that is expensive. I am not going to tell you what my mom paid for a pack before we made her quit smoking....She will be 80 on October 22 of this year.

Regards, all.
Linda

You will definitely BUY IT.

The FZ50 is... BUILT.

Yup. It took me over a month to decide if I was going to upgrade my Canon 10D for another Canon or upgrade my FZ30 to the FZ50. Well I decided to upgrade to the FZ50 and sell my 10D as well as the FZ30.

I would think you need to convert to Extra class (amateur radio)
Hi Ray...

I could get an Extra ticket (amateur radio) but it's unique being Advanced... They aren't minting any more of these licenses as far as I know...

Well i made my mind up Yesterday Monday that is and got the FZ50 only had to drive 20 miles for it and very happy with it, The only thing that lets the package down is that the Manual is on CD-Rom and i can't get it to print large letters from the pdf file :( only a novice with Digital so will post some pic's soon :))

Thank you all for your advice on wether to go for a FZ50 or stay with Canon and wait for the elusive Pro2.

Just ordered my FZ50 and it will be in my hands tommorow morning. Yipee!

Just given my Ixus 750 to my wife so she cant complain to much either :)

I paid £389 inc VAT for a black version.

Cheers to all and happy snapping

Malcolm
