Some of us are familiar with the background you mention.

My educated guess is that when KM 'shut down', they had a lot of
parts from the stopped production line, not to mention those which
would have been already set aside for repairs under their own
system.
At the time of the New Jersy KM repair facility shutdown, around April first, a poster in this forum said he saw a couple of semi's backed into the KM loading dock picking up inventory and parts. He did not say whose trucks they were but that they were those of a well known US firm. Why he refused to say what firm has bothered me since. But if you are still with us, PLEASE elaborate?? I thought at the time he was reserving his dibbs just to be a jump ahead of the rest of us but now I wonder.
This is addressing anyone's question about Sony/Precision not
having parts. Is there a black hole out there where the parts went?

told me they had parts to repair 5d and 7D cameras. Yet somone
else here on DPREVIEW called to check on their camera and they were
told, we have no parts to fix your camera.

Very confusing!
That was me. I was actually calling to check on some accessories that I'm trying to get sent back to me. I asked the CSR I was talking with if they could be absolutely certain that my camera couldn't be repaired. She put me on hold and came back confirming that there were no parts available.

But don't take my experience as gospel. If you've got a 7D at PCVR or are thinking about sending yours away for the AS problem, give them a call.

May 19th: 7D breaks--famous Anti-shake problem
May 22nd: Shipped to PCVR in CT
May 23rd: Arrived at PCVR according to UPS
June 5th: Received into PCVR system
June 14th: Camera with technician (finally!)
June 15th: Repair delayed; need to order parts
July 10th: Repair complete; en route to me
July 14th: Camera still has not arrived, so I call PCVR--camera unrepairable
July 17th: Call PCVR again and get referred to Sony, KM, back to Sony
July 18th: Receive call from Sony asking to fax my invoice for refund
Today: Still have not heard back from Sony about prorated refund

Call 1-877-462-4464 and give them your event ID#. Tell them that no one is contacting you about the status of your Minolta camera that can't be repaired that's still under the Konica-Minolta warranty. (I believe this group was originally part of Minolta....versus the other group that Sony threw together to answer questions about a product they have no information on.)

-I called that number (844-462-4464) today and the man seemed to know what was going on.

Just a little while ago, someone from Minolta called me. I asked him if he worked for Sony or Minolta and he said he is working between both companies. He asked what problem I was having. I told him briefly. He gave me a direct number to someone in charge handling the prorated refunds. He also told me that if I have to call 1-800-222-7669 again, to tell them I'm dealing with level 2 support and ask to be transferred. (ASK FOR LEVEL 2 support!)

-I called the direct number the Minolta guy gave me and the lady wanted me to refax my invoice and warranty card as she doesn't have it. She said that after she gets the fax they'll issue my 7 year prorated refund and she will call me. She said that if she doesn’t call me, that I’m to call her back as she didn’t receive the fax.

I won’t post the direct phone number as it goes directly to her desk. But, I believe that calling 877-462-4464 is what triggered Minolta into calling me this afternoon with her direct phone number.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. We just might get some answers if we run this rat race together.

Kendra,

The number you put 844-462-4464 does not work. At least not from the US.

Can you please email me number for the lady at Sony? My email address should be on my profile. If you click on my profile just above this post, you should see a link saying, send this person an email.

Thanks.

Heck for that you can get two at today's price.

Sounds like there is still some work being done to clean up a mess somebody made in the transition.

It shouldn't be this hard.

Once you get the number issue I just saw in a reply taken care of you should start a new thread with the answer at the top so its easy for people to find.

Its not an elegant solution, but KM is losing money each one this early in the 7 year period so they seem to be trying.

KM FIVE D

was in quotes Ken, just to differentiate from 'really' going OOB.

Whether it be (whoever) selling off the overstock 5D/7Ds (if that's what happened) or otherwise being remiss about all of us 16 million lens holders out here, there's someone who left us holding the bag.

Yes, I say holding the bag, because the R&D payments of the 'early adopters' who put the 7D on the map came to rely on the Warranty. Sony got the upgraded 5D to get an 'immediate' start with true DSLRs and it looks like there's no sign of KM or Sony "Looking back"!?!

I'm watching this with morbid fascination. My 5D has the "first shot dark" problem, but I really don't want to send it into a black hole. I still have a little time under the warranty and the problem is not that bad, so I'm going to wait a little longer to see how things shake out. But it looks like I will have to give up my 5D and go over to C or N. This stinks.

I was seriously contemplating buying the A100. Now I am going for a C or N. I will give my lens and Minolta Film SLR to my son when he grows up.

I was shocked when the Minolta guy I spoke to an hour ago said, "you have the choice to accept the DSC-H5 or take back your damaged camera. There is nothing else we can do."

I will give Sony a few more days.

Call 1-800-222-7669 and ask for level 2 support. I know they are giving prorated refunds.

Insist on talking to someone that has the ability to make decisions in this area. It's ridiculous to offer a P&S camera in place of a DSLR.

Now I'm assuming your camera is under warranty. I don't have any idea how all this would work for a camera out of warranty.

I'll post an update when my refund is on the way. As it stands now, the lady handling my refund called me back after getting my fax and is currently working on figuring my refund.

Magambo, email me if you have any questions.

Do you think there is anyone at Sony who reads this thread, and others like it? If not is there some way we can get it copied to the right person and ask for comments?

cheers

tom

Lot's of people were condemned and curicified for not being "optimisitic and enthusiastic" about Sony. So, don't feel bad. My 7d works for the time being. When (not if) it bites the dust, hellllooooo e-bay....

Kendra thanks. Yes mine is under warranty. Its only 10 months old. I believe I had a 1 year warranty.

Since I had refaxed my information on Friday and they said 3 working days, I am waiting until tomorrow to talk to Sony again. As mentioned earlier the call to Minolta was extremely disappointing.

Thanks for all the help.
