Service Advisory for Nikon Z8

Mine may be affected and I‘m wondering what exactly the wording is for different serial numbers.

Is it possible that some are affected and some may be affected?

Anyway, atm I am not overly nervous and have been using the camera for 4 weeks with many lens changes with no problems. The Nikon branch Germany is also only half an hour away from my hometown.

Filled out the paperwork and included the generated packing slip in the box. UPS couldn't tell from the generated UPS label of if it would be insured or how much, so they had to generate a new UPS label that I had to pay for if I wanted to insure it (which I did for the purchase cost). I also slapped NPS Priority labels on both sides of the box - so we'll see how long NPS-flagged repairs take for this fix.

Mine is affected, and I'm going to send it using the UPS label Nikon provided. The question is, if the camera is lost or damaged in shipping does Nikon cover it or do we need to insure it (which, at nearly $4K value, is a pretty penny!)
Mike
Most major vendors self-insure their shipments rather than paying for insurance through the carriers. This includes Nikon, B&H, Adorama, etc.

This means if there's damage or loss from shipping they eat the cost. This is less expensive for them than paying for insurance since they don't have to cover the profit built into the insurance premium charged by a third party.

I believe that for when they ship it back, but could not confirm on route there.

It should apply whenever they are the party generating the shipping label.

I spoke to a Nikon repair centre and they advised to get the lens mount exchanged even if you don’t have any issues. Apparently, it happens with just some select lenses but not with every lens (depends on the tolerances of the mounts). They also said repair time is half an hour, so it‘s a very minor thing to fix. I‘ll take my camera to the repair center and will collect it on the same day, so not that big of an issue.
This is good to know, so I can beat the rush I guess. I suspected that it could be on a per-lens basis and that while many don't seem to have this issue, they might encounter it in the future, although it does make you wonder if say 6 of your lenses are fine, and you buy a new lens why would the 7th for some reason have an issue? Wouldn't that more of a lens issue than the camera? Unless this is just their default response so people don't blame the next lens they buy that doesn't fit.

Does anyone know what is the actual cause of the issue, what is blocking the lens from turning? My body is also affected, but all my 5 lenses mount perfectly fine (including FTZ adapter) so I'm not sending this to service yet.

I have also noticed that the lens release button has a small click when pressing it (unless it's perfectly in the middle of the hole in the lens). Not sure if this is intended either. The joystick feels a bit unreliable too.. so clearly some QC control issues on Nikon's end.

The lens mount on the Z8 has a certain tolerance that is slightly too tight which leads to some lenses not mounting at all (because they have certain tolerances too and the combination of the Z8 mount and the mount of lenses with comparatively small tolerances causes the issue).

I agree, it "should" be, but it's a risk to go on such an assumption without confirmation.

I have not read every post in every thread on this topic, but is there anyone, aside from myself, that actually has had the issue as described in the service advisory? (That a lens will actually not rotate into the locked position.)

I myself have had the issue intermittently, as I have described in more detail in previous posts.

It seems the description "in some rare cases" in the service advisory is correct.

btw, I am not in any rush to send it in for repair, despite actually having had the issue. At present it is just an occasional annoyance. I wish all issues in life were this minor.

I live in Singapore. My Z8 was affected so I sent it in for servicing yesterday morning. I was able to pick-up my camera this afternoon. I did ask them if they changed anything. They said "No. They just adjusted the mount."

I'm still not sure exactly what they did for the Service Advisory.

Might be worth mentioning that my Z8 did not have problems mounting the following lenses before I sent it for servicing:
- FTZ II

- 24-120 F4

- 14-30 F4

- 24-200

- 35mm F1.8

- 50mm F1.8

- 40mm F2

I live in India, and when I asked Nikon service centre about the repairs, they said they don't have parts, and noted my contact details, and will call me when the parts arrive. If it is only adjustments, what parts are they waiting for?

I wonder if it's an issue with the tolerances (ie. the mount is not 100% round or something... or it's round enough so lenses will go on but it's very difficult and risk of getting stuck is higher).

Im 3009062 and affected. All of my lenses, 50 1.8, 85 1.8 and 14-30 4 mount just fine but I have had them all "catch" a bit when I rotate to lock them intermittantly. I guess I had not thought about it that much because with a little extra force they lock in just fine and have taken excellent photos.

Thanks for sharing that and glad it’s working for you. When did you receive it?

My local Nikon Store (Switzerland) said the same. And as far as I understand, the issue is the button on the mount (apparently too low quality for Nikon standards). They asked me to wait until the get the parts and that the service would take only ten minutes. They also suggested not to worry as long as the camera is not affected. So I am waiting. I haven't experienced any issues with the Z8. It is working great :)

I spoke with local Nikon service (EU) and they said to repair this issue, a small 'foil' is mounted somewhere inside the mount. They still don't have the part(s) either.

I have S/N 60051** and have been declared as affected by Nikon, although I have no symptoms.

So I believe both Nikon in New York and California have repaired some already. At least from word on the streets lol!
