A couple of teams are progressing on putting together plausible reconstructions of the DPReview forum structure.

DPRevived.com is here: https://dprevived.com/categories/

DP Review Cloned here: https://dpreview.communitydummy.com/community/

These startups may prove more familiar than joining an existing forum.

Note there is a registration bug at the moment with DPrevived, but if you ignore and log in anyway with your account it seems to work.

These are both work in progress at the moment with the expected (hopefully temporary) issues. To have a chance of working of course, they need members to move over and start posting. One thing that occurs to me is if Amazon are letting us download our own content, can we move it to the new clone sites to build up a back catalogue of content?

Direct links to Sigma forums on those sites:

That would be a wonderful thing but I can't imagine how it would work. You would need serious smarts built into the back end.
Thanks.

I've registered with both and been trying them out to see which looks and works best for me. Even though it's very early days for both, there are immediate differences.

My initial conclusion is the DPreview Clone looks and works best. So if I were asked to choose just one as a test jump, I'd choose DPreview Clone.

i really like its nice simple layout and it works well on mobile. i will register definitely. to me this is the best option as the content will move over also.

this is the one i think

also read this, i also got an error message on signup, but i could still then login

...yes works despite the niggle.

But for now having tried both, I much prefer DPR Clone :

- I'll be going there in preference to DPRevived (-which just isn't as neat, has bugs, fonts too big, and no rich-text editor).

Try DPR Clone.

i had a look at dpr clone but i found the forum a bit dated. i prefer the cleanness and newer style of dprevived. they need to squash the bugs tho which im sure they will.

cheers

The issue I have with the clone site is that it's part of a family of forums from the same origin, which in 2012 decided they had created so many independent forums that they should group them together under one umbrella, camera-info.com only to then launch a new round of brand-specific forums, including l-mount-forum.com in 2018. And now another duplicate set of forums to match the layout of dpreview.com.

I also like the ideas bobn2 has about making dprevived a user managed foundation so that it won't disappear overnight again.

They also intend to add the facility to upload your final DPreview download to create a back catalogue of older posts.

- ok it's good to know the history of dpr clone, and also how dprevived can go forward.

The problem I'm having with both those sites, is I don't think they can offer a threaded 'tree' view of posts (it's always flat), or show which posts (or threads) you've read (or partially read) or not.

Seems like there's needs to be someone who can code this rather than using basic templates which are limited in their basic operation.

Yes, tree structured threads are important in a high volume site like DPR where a thread often gets long and breaks up into sub threads. You need the threaded view to be able to easily track the posts you are interested in. Flat views are good for quickly scrolling posts in a linear conversation but become hopelessly confusing when there are parallel conversations happening within the thread with one group of people in discussion with one another while another part of the thread has a different group debating something slightly different.

Neither method is perfect and being able to switch views with a click is important.

...yes 100%. A threaded view is essential, this is 2023 not 1980.

Do any of the suggested alternative forums offer this?

I see to remember threaded views being the norm in the beginning - bulletin boards, feed readers, usenet clients and so on. Or am I mis-remembering? Flat view is modern...

One useful feature in the threaded view here is the automatic indented quotes like the above.

You might be remembering the common bulletin-board function "multi-quote" which is not automatic but is better than a kick up the ass.

Before claiming definitively, that one forum is better than the other, I would wait a couple of weeks. They are both works in progress.

DPreview clone is initially certainly more usable, because it is based on years tested photography forum software. Like noted above - same as camera-info and couple of sister forums. I posted there, yes - Sigma forum thus started earlier than big labels :)

But I would vote for DP revived - this is really work in progress and most likely to become better and more like current dpreview. I'll post there too, when initial quirks are ironed out and it is possible to add some bigger images and so on.

I just now had a look at "multi-quotes" but found RFF's option less than friendly, RFF has recently up-graded to Xenforo. There, it doesn't look like their quoting system is anywhere near as good as DPR's (I mean this DPR, not 'revived' ... sd, SD, here we go again ...).

My congratulations to this DPR's programmers handling of that part of the GUI so well.

Come back, Iain, all is forgiven ...

... well ... almost all ... :-D

Me too. I'm currently on DPrevived, Dpreview clone, and rangefinderforum and waiting to see how 'revived' and the 'clone' work out ...
