F828 manual online!

great stuff! love it to read these manuals. seems to me that I'm going to be stuck with 2 prosumers in a while. Got the Minolta A1 now (which I love), but I also think the Sony has some advantages over the A1 which I would love too. So I might get the Sony F828 as well and use them both (if the wife allows me to)

at 640x480 you may need a slighly larger hard drive if you have pets :)
I would like to be able to take a picture every x seconds, also
motion detection to have it work as a web cam, and the images
stored directly on the PC via USB. Why not support video that way
also. And since there's almost Christmas why settle with this, IR
remote control is a must...

I didn't notice anything about cycle times or normal shot to shot timings in there. If I just take a standard 8m Shot whats the time taken to focus and take another one

That style hood also protects the lens barrel when stored. That hood also gets more use that one that is stored in a bag. You have to unstore it to adjust the lens... so why not put it on? 8-)

Macro-
... It usually saves space
when you pack it into the bag.

the 828 is a too different camera that it is like comparing a lamborghini to a hummer..they are both cool..but meant for different purpose.

I got the 300d and it takes amazing photos, period

I was hoping to get the 828 for infrared but looks like a no go now.....so actualy it is quite the opposite because by crippling the night mode, Sony just lost me as a customer.

Doesn't the F717 synch up to any speed available?
Yes, and the F707 does too. I just took a flash photo with my F707 at 1/1000 sec yesterday. I don't recall it being in those manuals either. It is my guess that the F828 will sync at any shutter speed.

Am I correct in gathering that executing One push also fires
the flash if it's been enabled as described?
That is my assumption when the "Flash WB" setting has been selected. Flash WB should be a nice feature, especially when there is reasonably strong ambient light. I wonder if exposure compensation will work with flash?
I do have a niggle with the One push feature, and that's that the
name appears to have become something of a misnomer. I originally
assumed that the traditional One push button had been moved from
the barrel to the top, but it turns out that that particular button
has disappeared and it's now only the WB Mode button that's
adjacent to the shutter release. Phil's review didn't really make
the point (or maybe I missed it) that the dedicated calibration
button had gone.

The way I read it, you have to press-and-scroll to "One push SET",
hit the joystick to calibrate, then press-and-scroll again to "One
push" in order to actually shoot with the WB reference you've just
grabbed. If you shoot permanently in Custom WB, then re-calibrating
it periodically becomes very considerably slower than on F7*7
models. "One push" is certainly no longer an appropriate
description IMO. It's now as convoluted as on the 10D/300D, but
without the latter's advantage of being able to store reference
frames.
I've never heard of a "niggle", but I like the term!

I missed this point when I skimmed the manual last night. I assumed the WB button near the shutter release was like the dedicated "One Push" button on the 7X7, only relocated. I'm glad you pointed this out.

You're correct about reading between the lines. The wording and completeness of Sony manuals certainly leaves a lot to be desired, but the WB section is especially vague.

The way I read the manual, the "One Push SET" function sets the WB for both the "Flash WB" and the "One Push" settings. It looks like you have to select either "Flash WB" or "One Push" first, then press the center of the multi-selector to tell the camera which one you selected, then select "One Push SET", and finally press the center of the multi-selector a second time to store the WB.

I always use manual WB myself with an Expo/Disc, so I'm hoping we're both wrong. Otherwise, the method for setting the 828 "One Push" manual WB will be notably compromised from the easy-to-use 7X7 method.

It looks like we'll soon know for sure.
