Is there a sling bag that will carry an R5 with battery grip?

I am a person who always puts a battery grip on my Canon full frame mirrorless cameras like my R5 (also did for DSLR like the 5D Mark IV). I also like to use a sling bag when I can. Does anyone know of a sling bag that will work with a setup like that? Typically will have a RF 24-105/4L IS lens or my new RF 15-35/2.8L IS. Of course I may have other lenses in the bag but I've found the slings I have are not deep enough to deal with the wider R5 body or the profile of the taller height of the battery grip that the body takes on with the grip.

The bag I am comparing things to are the ThinkTANK Photocross 13 which are at best 5" deep. Really need a sling that is 5.5" deep since the R5 is 5.45 inches wide if I could find one to handle an array of equipment. Does anyone know of one?

Look forward to hearing back if you know of one. Thank you.

I use a holster style bag... the Lowepro AW75. I typically have my R5 with grip or 1DX with 100-400 ll inserted into the bag (hood reversed). It’s a very nice fit with enough pockets for other stuff. Easy access as it hangs off the shoulder and off to the side.

‘if that bag is too long, they do make a shorter one.

I do have a two Thinktank holster bags. A short one that works for a 24-105 or a 24-70 or 15-35 and another that would work with the EF 70-200 or 100-400 II. Used these both with my 5D IV with battery grip or 1Dx. Does the job for the one camera, one lens setup but I was hoping to find something to work with single gripped body and two lenses or even a small third like the RF 35/1.8 also.

Both of the Mountainsmith sling bags would work. I have the larger one and love it. I got it for that reason, 5D MIII with grip. I can put that in there with the 100-400 + 1.4x mounted and still carry another lens or two. The Thinktank holsters are great but if you go that route make sure you get the one for gripped bodies as the standard ones won't work.

It can hang off the shoulder? Hmm, I'll look in to that. I always had it around my waist and it made long treks uncomfortable as it always brushed against the thighs.

Are you talking about the Mountainsmith Descent or another bag? please let me know.

Funny thing is I own a Descent but didn’t think to try it. It says it’s only 5 inches deep so I did not think to try it out. Have a bunch of flash gear in that bag but can give it a try so see how it works. admit that the L bracket on the gripped body does make any fit worse.

Thank you.

It looks to be only 4.75 inches deep in the interior. For a battery grip bases R5 you have have one dimension at 5.45 (width) and 3.85 (height). The BF-R10 width is 5.6 inches that makes it wider and the height is 1.65 inches of additional height.

So with the grip I place the W x H at 5.6 in x 5.5 in. If you like an L-bracket assume almost 6 in x 6in.

I don't know of a sling bag that can support it. Maybe this is a want that just can't be satisfied for a R5 + BG-R10.

Yes, the descent, larger one. The smaller one should work depending on the lens combo. You can rearrange the inside to fit lengthwise as well.

Yes you can lay the body/lens combo down but a gripped body with L-bracket is basically 6 x 6 for the body which doesn't lay down in a 5 inch deep bag.

Here are the dimensions from Mountainsmith's website (for the 11):

DIMENSIONS
  • 15” x 12” x 6.25” (H x W x D)
It worked for me when I had the 5D M3. With the 100-400 II (hood reversed). I was able to keep my 16-35 f4 on one side and other accessories on the other. I actually ordered 4 different sling bags from amazon (free returns) for this exact reason and this was the only one that fit. Freaking awesome bag BTW.

Did more homework. I had to look up the bags on line and find more detail than Mountainsmith had on their own site. The newer bag is not the Descent. It is the Decent 11L (and smaller is Descent 6L) and it has the following dimensions. .
  • Exterior Dimensions 15.0 x 12.0 x 6.25" / 38.0 x 30.5 x 16.0 cm
  • Interior Dimensions 14.5 x 11.5 x 5.75" / 36.75 x 29.25 x 14.5 cm
The interior at 5.75" is the important number to me. Exterior is a nice to know but won't tell you about what it holds.

The 6L is:
  • Interior Dimensions 12.0 x 7.25 x 5.25" / 30.5 x 18.5 x 13.3 cm
The Descent I have, and still have the tag says its dimensions are
  • Exterior Dimensions 15.0 x 11.5 x 5.75"
  • Interior Dimensions 14.25 x 10.75 x 5"
So I will find out more and pick up the 11L to try it out.

I will add Mindshift Photocross 13 works with a few caveats. Shorter lenses on the gripped R5, 35 or 50mm work placing camera in vertically but it is tight so would not pack an ipad or have a bunch of stuff in pockets. Placing the camera in horizontally I was able to attach the EF 70-200 2.8 ver 1 or the EF 100-400 ver 1. But again I only have a couple of memory cards and the rain cover in the pouches. A EF16-35 will also fit but extremely tight fit. Usually use this setup when on the motorcycle or out trail riding.

I went on a long quest for a small sling that would hold my R with a grip and 100mm attached. It seemed like nothing existed. Even though the mesurements on paper looked a tiny bit small I ordered the Tenba 7l sling. I figured at worst I use it without a grip. Surprise surprise it fit perfectly! I put a plastic insert in the hotshoe to avoid any rubbing on the inner material just to be safe.

Not sure how much larger the R5 is.

The Tenba has a little bit of give in it. If you can find one in person or can return if it doesnt fit- It may be worth checking out.
