I'm cynincal - suggestion for Phil Askey

Jolly I agree. I have not read all of the 39 posts so far...but I vote with you. Especially the cats and birds. There are places for that, but why tire our eyes here?

Aesthetics is another issue than this forum addresses. But it may be more important than technique. At least I think so.

I propose a forum dedicated for all those sappy photographs of
family members, especially children, and cats.

Honestly, there's only so much I can take of children and cats.

Yes lets add this list up...

Cats (these are really evil creatures)

Dogs (unless the dog is eating the cat)

Kids - who really cares if a forum member has a wonderful kid and wants to share pictures of them with the rest of the community.

Moon - the moon has been photographed enough - I am sure it is getting tired of it..

Sqwerls - these are just pesky little rodents who have an interesting social life if one sits back and really watches them - boring to say the least...

Landscapes - I really dislike these images - who really wants to see parts of the world captured in a photograph that some of us may never have the opportunity to visit. And those fall images of hardwood forests really blow chow in the fall..

Sunsets (could be included in landscapes, but they deserve a special category) - the sun rises and sets everyday - why take a photo of it??

Macro's - up close photos of flowers, insects - these are rather silly, to spend 2k on a camera to take pictures of a bug? Why not just smell the roses?

Wildlife - images of wildlife really dont excite me at all, who cares if there are wild animals at all..

People - especially images of those very pretty models - yuk!

Buidlings - who in their right mind would stand there and take pictures of a building? Especially those really old buildings combined with a landscape photograph. Now put a pretty model in the scene and you have the makings of a truly ugly photograph..

Art/Sculptures - I dont know about everyone else but to me photos of sculptures and art is really kind of pointless, why not just look at it? Do we really need a photographic memory of something we might not see again for years to come?

I think I might sell my camera, computer etc and just stay home and pout...

To everyone that posts, eghaad !! photos taken with your camera ! - please stop it - just because you have a camera doesnt mean you should take pictures with it!!

..please take the above post with a grain of salt, or a shot of 15 yearold single malt scotch :)

To me the forums are too much measurebating and not enough photography.

Jolly, you started your thought but didn't complete it. I'd be curious to hear exactly what (if any) images are acceptable to this type of forum.

Your message came off as a bit hostile when I don't think that was the intention. Can you expand a bit on your original thought and offer a suggestion on what could be considered acceptable?

Thanks.

Well yes you illuminate us. I belive the start of your list is indeed the bottom of the barrel in what to take photos of. Why? Because, as you know, such thoughts are so common and really don't inspire. You hit the head on the nail. What we want is poetry in photos..something that says more than is there. You lead the charge. Lets all join in and raise the standard..thank you Iluminate.
BTW..lets put a stop to sunsets twice on the list along with cats.

........ please read the posting rules as supplied by the administrator.

IMO, interpretation of the rules places pictures referred to by Jolly Rodger in the Samples and Galleries forum.

Especially as the D100 is certainly not new, the Nikon D-SLR forum is not the proper forum for display, according to the rules and I did not make them.

Now the odd picture is no harm at all but we all get on a one upmanship track and soon the forums are full of pictures of interest only to the poster. Reasonably recently Phil did ask all such post to go to the Samples & Galleries.

Acceptable posts here are technique and problem images, along with outstanding examples of great photography.

A few names may come to mind and a fantastic elk or bear shot may be posted to be admired by all and a discussion on technique follows, but subsequent “me toos” should really take their efforts to the Samples & Galleries forum, same for all subjects.

Or subsequent posters who then are only interested in the "subject" of the picture per se, and not its technical merit, as in "This is my cat in the garden", and not, "Should I have bounced the flash for this cat picture?" There is a difference.

...could posters please trim their replies. This applies particularly to posts where someone has posted, say three large images, and then every one of the twenty odd replies carries these images. Apart from slowing things down for posters on a dial-up, it also wastes bandwidth.

Don't be lazy, trim your replies.

The reason I enjoy seeing photos here is that I know they are taken with My camera, or one very similar. I used to post in S&G, but had a problem because although I thoroughly enjoyed viewing pics from others, I had NO idea WHAT camera, WHAT EXIF, what methods, how the photos were taken. I didn't LEARN anything. I suggested many times that people indicate their camera make, model, and post some specifics, but it just didn't happen. I have had my D100 for a year and STILL learn and will continue to learn here from photos posted and corresponding conditions in which it was taken. This is my first SLR and I have a long way to go. I come hre first. (After Thom's book).

I am happy to view " my first shot with my new D100 etc"
Many people are still making payments on their dslr gear.
They are proud of their first attempt.

Actually some of these first shots are excellant.

You never know who may become a very successful photographer.

Help them- don't hinder them.

I disagree. I would hate to see the photographs disappear from this forum. The photographs along with the discussions of how they were obtained, what equipment was used, are what make this forum so uniquely useful. I have gotten thousands of ideas here based on what I have seen other people do. I have bought equipment as a result of seeing what others are using to do the type of photography that I want to do. I have never been disappointed either, because when I buy something, I know exactly what it is capable of yielding, thanks to this forum. There simply is no better site on the net for Nikon D100 users, IMHO. I would hate to see this forum maimed by having the photographs stripped from it, and I don't think there is any subject that isn't useful. It's the originality and talent of the photographer that makes the photograph, not the subject.

There are several members of this forum who are widely known for publishing nothing but photographs of their children and their pets.

The problem with this is that it clutters up the forum with only special interest subject matter that is interesting only to the proud parent or pet owner.

Buildings, architecture, landscapes, models, professional sporting events (not a stupid elementary soccer tournament of your kid), and the like are appropiate because at least more forum members aside from the parent poster show geniune interest.

I have no problem with viewing interesting and thought inspring material.

...don't feel compelled to post them (all) in the, for want of a better word, "technical" forums unless there actually is a point to the pictures, i.e. others could learn something from them. If you just want to post your efforts, post them in "Samples and Galleries" because that's what that forum is there for http://www.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1005 . This is different from "My cat, taken at various focal lengths with my new Sigkina 10-500mm lens". Personally, I just don't want to see more, "My dog in the garden, what do you think?" pictures here (in the technical forums).

That's what most of the forums here are for. Showing off your pics. just for the sake of showing them should be done in "Samples and Galleries" (or why do you think that forum exists?), just as much as shots with a particular lens should be posted in "Nikon SLR Lens Talk" and not "Nikon SLR Talk", which happens quite frequently.

But yes you are right. They should be posted in the Sample and
gallery forum.

The thing is many people post a picture here in the NSLRTF to
discuss a technique and some technical aspects of their Nikon
gears.
-------

Many, yes. The majority even. But certainly not all. And they are the ones, I think, Jolly Roger's original post was aimed at, and I for one could not agree more with it.
