Brush problem

Hi

I am hoping friends here can help.

I have not, as far as I am aware, touched anything re brushes, as I do not touch what I don’t understand fully.

I have had this problem where the brush paints outside of the intended or selected area.

Our good friend Patsy did offer some help when I originally asked and I made sure cursor/brush was set to normal etc but am still having this problem.

I have also re-set the brush as he recommended.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing it please as it is impossible to work in detail with.

Did this just begin to happen suddenly?

Are you using the most recent version of PS?

I don't know if this information will help, but to determine if the brush circle is undersizing, relative to what results, or the brush is oversizing when you click, try creating a new layer 100 x 100 pixels. Then use a brush of 100 pixels, Does the resultant circle lie inside the layer of beyond it?

Hi ArtMar,

Yes this has happened suddenly....no apparent reason?

I am using CS6

I created a new layer at 100 px square.

I then created a brush 100 px

When I place the brush in the square it does not appear to be big enough to fill it.

However...when I click to fill, it is a perfect fit.

The brush image size is therefore smaller than it is actually painting/filling.....

I have also established that the brush does not do this when I use an old version of CS2...

Interesting....so the pixel dimension of the brush is correctly imiplemented but the image of the brush is not correct...that must be pertinent information, but I'm not sure how exactly!

Have you tried "reset tool"?

To reset brushes hold ctrl-shift-alt at the same time and start Photoshop cs6. Now it will ask if you want to reset the tools, click yes and see if the problem is gone.

If that doesn't help, then have a look at this screenshot for the correct setting of the cursor...

Many thanks to all for their help.

I have tried the suggestions about reset tool etc.

I did that individually for the brushes.

I tried Toermalijn’s method “To reset brushes hold ctrl-shift-alt at the same time and start Photoshop cs6. Now it will ask if you want to reset the tools”...

When I selected ctrl-shift-alt (which I tried a few times) I did not get the message about resetting tools.

I then checked my cursor settings and mine are the same as shown.

I read Tony’s comment BUT...if you look at the video, it shows that in CS2, the brush works perfectly for some reason?

That makes me think the PC is ok but something in CS6 is the problem...perhaps a complete reinstall?

Any thoughts please.....

Ray,

you have to hold ctrl-shift-alt all 3 at the same time while starting cs6.

I tried on my machine and it askes to remove the settings file...

so, hold ctrl-shift-alt and start photoshop.exe...it should load a small screen asking to delete the settings file...If not, then your install might be damaged.

In cs6, I have the same behavier as you, if you chose standard or precision, it does exactly what you're looking voor but you don't have a round circle.

Before a reinstall ... and if none of the other fixes work,

Have a look at the Properties - Compatibility settings of both CS2 ( since it works correctly) and CS6.

Go to the folder for each - right click on the photoshop app icon - choose properties - compatibilty - and look for any differences.

I have the same bahavier as you in cs6 with the 3rd option, only the first 2 cursor settings will show the behavier you are looking for. Affinity Photo is working correctly, same behavier as cs6. I also reset the settings, wich didn't do anything.

It might be a bug, wich won't be fixed...

I went into compatibility....

I saw high DPI scaling over-ride

It was ticked...

I unticked that and it is now back to the correct size brush and application on the image....

Relieved ....

Massive thanks to everyone who, as always has been kind enough to help, come forward with ideas and help...

Did it mess up your high dpi settings for the ui?

It did for mine...if i turn it off, the dpi scaling is not correct for cs6....LOL.

Probably a bug since other tools work correctly with the high dpi scaling on.

Just such a relief because it has been a nightmare recently doing the colourisations and having to allow for the brush painting further than it suggested it would....

Just turned mine off and re-started and thankfully it is ok.....
The UI is ok and whatever problems I have had seem to have gone...

That is strange on my 4k monitor I need the high dpi override on, else I get a very small ui. ui = user interface like menu structure etc.
