Hi, Just starting out. Went to the park today and took about 20 random shots of trees, lakes, waterfalls and ducks etc. Just tryigg different settings, prog, Manual etc etc. Got back to work and downloaded the photos to my work computer. About half were rubbish and the rest were useless. Looks like I left my iso on 1600 so lots of overexposure. Anyway got home and decided to look on my own PC and give them a post edit. However my pc said loading error. I tried a few times and the message was the same. I reset my computer and took out my CF card and reinserted into the camera ( Canon 400D ) the loading appeared now to be working but no photos to load. No big deal but I lost all the photos. It could have been a nightmare if they were important though. Is this something that can happen now and again ? Only thing I can think of is if I downloaded them at work and erased as I downloaded them but I dont think this was it. Any advice welcome.

How exactly did you download them on to your work computer?

Again, how exactly did you try to download them and what was the precise error message?

What do you mean by "reset my computer"? Do you mean that you rebooted your computer? Why was that necessary? And did you not remove the memory card before doing so?

Normally, when you connect a memory card to your computer via a card reader, the card looks just like an external disc. You can see all the folders and files on the card before you start to download anything. Did you see what files were on your card? Downloading the files should not change any of those files unless you tell it to delete them or overwrite them.

How exactly did you download them on to your work computer? Plugged my camera via USB and the computer did the rest and they appear in my photos.

A complete guess but the most likely thing is that you cut and pasted them onto your work computer.

Some programs can find the deleted files (they're not deleted, just their entry on the card's list of files) but bitter experience tells me to always copy and paste then delete later :-)

Every so often I run an undelete program on one of my cards - often nice to see old, long deleted photos.

Put the card back in the camera and check again, the computer may not have ejected the card correctly.

OK, I'm guessing here but I suspect that transferring the photos to the work computer was more along the lines of "copy and delete" set in that computer's software. A few programs think this is convenient.

If they're stil on the work cmputer, just copy them to a flash drive and move them to your computer. If not, things get complicated.

On a more positive note you can try running a recovery program on the CF card. Transcend has a nice one called RecoverRx. This can take a long time. I'd do this overnight. There's a few of these programs out there.

Thanks for the answers but this time it’s no big deal as the photos were rubbish. I just want avoid a card full of great pics and the same happens again .

It does sound as though you are very new to this sort of thing.

One of my computers (iPad) offers the option of deleting the images from the card after uploading, but with PCs, I browse the card and copy the images across manually, so there's no chance of deleting them.

It's just possible that you have a faulty card or card reader, maybe your home PC doesn't like the card. This is quite rare, but does happen.

It's wood thing that you have experienced problems at this early stage and are in a position to learn from the errors/mistakes. BTW, I'd recommend shooting on Auto rather than do too much experimentation at first.

Totally agree but today has been a lesson . I have now read about “ Sunny 16 settings” and this could have avoided the many bad pics from today . You learn more by what you do wrong than what you do right. Tomorrow is another day.

I have now read about “ Sunny 16 settings”
..which is what you use in sunny conditions with a film camera that doesn't have a meter. The more contemporary technique is to learn P/A/S modes.

See what the other guy said about Sunny 16; totally irrelevant these days.

You'd be surprised just how well your camera performs in Auto mode. Some cameras (such as Sony) have "Intelligent" Auto modes that perform scene analysis and adjust accordingly.

I'd guess that 95% of my shots are taken in Aperture priority, with the rest in SS priority and the occasional use of Manual. I even use Auto if I'm feeling lazy and need on-camera flash.

Keep up the practice, and keep it simple.

If you don't answer to Tom's question above, it would be hard to further advise on what should do to avoid similar unfortunate be happened again unless you have figured out the problem already.

Usually use the native file manger of your operating system could be the easiest and most safe instead of using proprietary software (convenience if you know what you are doing) which very often need to save the image on specific folders, and do specific thing. Basically a photo/video clip is no different from any usual text or worksheet file, been kept in a specific folder (usually under DCIM or sub folder(s) under the card) while it was written. If use "copy + paste" function the original will never be deleted from your card.

Your saying of RESET computer also worried me, because it sounds very abnormal on usual operation that might have corrupted your card...

If I have a genius question and wish to know what was wrong, I must provide as detail info as I know to gather mind of members to seek for the solution. That can really avoid similar mistake again.

Get yourself a card reader that can read a compact flash card. Use Windows Explorer to transfer your images to your computer.

After verifying the images on your computer (and backing up if desired), return the card to the camera and format via Menu.

I've used all manner of image transfer software and image managers, and the above is truly the most foolproof.

I can seem to see them now ?

There's a null post early in the thread where your answers (if any) should have been in black.

This one...

When you reply to a post on here, and leave the original message, please be sure to NOT reply in red along with the post you're answering. Hit "Enter" a couple times so it creates a new line, so the text is black and it's separate & distinct from the post to which you're replying - as I have done here. Otherwise it's incredibly difficult to find your replies when it's on the same line and same color.

If I am not wrong, the content in red actually were originally words written by Tom.

Had you added anything there? I am very sorry that your answer to Tom, if any, does not appear on my screen... :-(

I suggest starting with the Intelligent Auto mode, and after a week or two try S mode and A mode.

No, the text was exactly the same as a previous post, but with no reply text from the OP.

This can happen by an edit malfunction, an undo operation, or perhaps was a result of a computer "reset".
