I just received my Sigma f2.8 EX HSM OS DC 17-50 mm. It will be on an EOS 80D. What a nice lens? So far the very few test photos I have shot with it have impressed me.

All my other lenses EF-S have had MFA done to them and it has helped. The Sigma doesn't seem to need it. What do you who have used it think about the need to do MFA on it?

If a lens needs MFA do it. If it doesn’t, don’t.

I hope you have better luck with this lens than I did. It took 4 lenses in the shop to get one that didn't have soft lower left corner, and then I discovered that the focus accuracy was quite unreliable on my 70D.

When it got the focus right it was great (very sharp), but too often (especially at f2.8) it wasn't quite right. I did use MFA to fine-tune the lens to camera.

It wasn't me or the camera because my Canon 24-105L was spot on every time. I didn't keep the Sigma very long - sold it used.

If you search here you should find that this is a fairly common complaint with this lens. Comments are that it works better with Nikon.

Best of luck with it.

Colin

So far I can't complain about the focus. Its so far tack sharp. I don't think this lens needs MFA at all.
