New lens? Pro's, Con's, help *might be long*

Hello folks. I'm planning to buy a 7D3 after the release and initial kinks are worked out. As of now, best guess for that is sometime fall or holiday's of 2018. I was really hoping to have it for storm season of this year but alas, that is not to be. I might also consider a 90D if the specs justify it, was thinking about the 80D but ultimately couldn't justify that step up from my old T2i with the 7D3 around the corner and the possibility of 4k video.

Which brings me to my question...with no camera on the near term horizon, I could buy some new glass that would provide me a little better speed and therefor perhaps better images for the upcoming storm chase season in April/May. I would also prefer to get this new lens before our family vacation which begins February 24th.

I currently have the 15-85 which has been exclusively mounted for probably 4 years now. It's a good enough all around lens with enough focal length variation that I simply decided to sell my telephoto and as you can imagine, the kit lens hasn't seen my body in closer to 7 years.

I would like something that has some degree of weather proofing and would also like to have something with good focal range. However, it seems that most of what I'm running into is some sort of compromise. I either give up the wide angle in exchange for a bit more reach, to say 105mm or I give up a lot on the long-end. Further it seems many of these lenses even higher end lenses have more compromises with distortion and such than my 15-85.

I feel like I have to be missing something here and would appreciate some help and thoughts on finding a lens.

Other option is I can sit tight and see what they bundle the 7D3 with.
If you are staying with APS-C you have an option that I'd envy. You could get a pair of zooms: an 18-35mm and a 50-100mm - yes, they are limited range, but they are f/1.8.
I may wind up going mirrorless, the stuff from Fuji, in particular the X-T2 is outstanding and hits a lot of the checkmarks that I need/want...wish Canon would get their s**t together but that seems unlikely.

I guess you changed your mind because a couple of replies earlier you said this:

"I could also go mirrorless and jump to Nikon but don't particularly want to do either of those. Mirrorless has some advantages but by the time you add a good lens you don't really change the form factor all that much."

good luck with whatever path you decide to take.

Buddy of mine switched from SLR to Mirrorless about a year ago. He sent me a bunch of reading, some of it here, which I did...some of the systems are sub par. But the Fuji system in particular is appealing. I like the D500 but it is awful on video.

You are a bit all over the place here, but if it were me I'd keep the 15-85 and get an 80D. And I would get the 55-250STM.

The 15-85 is a very good lens. I had the 17-55 f2.8 at the same time and used the 15-85 much more because the range is so good. The 17-55 I used mostly just for low light.

Both lenses are a bit long in the tooth now, since you already have one stick with it.

But your camera is very old tech. The sensor, the focusing, everything. The 80D will focus better, have more resolution, much better noise specs. I would guess between 1 and 2 stops of noise improvement, and noise that's easier to deal with in post. Plus live view, and many other technical improvements. You wouldn't believe how much better an 80D would be.

The 80D can be gotten cheap, maybe a refurb would be good? Heck, I have a T2i and I got an SL2 for travel- even that is a huge improvement. Then if and when the 7DIII comes out you can decide then what is best.

No, they‘re not, by far! Havent looked into mirrorless until this week, and sony‘s offering.. if i had the money i‘d throw all my canon–gear in the bin and buy all–new alpha iii r. Such a sexy little camera!

Funny my research this week has indicated similar thanks to the urging of a buddy of mine. I've started looking at the X-T2 and I like it.

I have a hard time with sony as a company because they are effing awful to deal with on the hometheater side so I'm unlikely to ever give them another dollar.

Look closely at Canon Refurb ...

80D + 55-250 STM with your 15-85 would be a very good bang for your buck as well as a very nice kit. Buying refurb will keep your cost down (Canon refurb gear has the same 1 year warranty as new) so you should be able to recover most of your investment if you decide on the 7D3 in a year or so.

For how many years was there talk of a 7d mk ii? 5? 6?

Have they improved the 55-250 since I owned it 8 years ago? It was pretty poor quality then...

Oh, very much so, IMO. I think that pretty much everything is better about it. One of the most underrated lenses in the Canon lens line up, especially when you consider its value. People have been able to get it just over $100 USD when it’s been on sale at Canon refurb. That’s just crazy.
