I'd welcome views on the question above - is is useful/worthwhile getting the 10-18 if you've already got the 15-85. I presently have the 15-85, an 18-55 STM and the 24mm/40mm STM pancakes. I mainly shoot landscapes, which would include townscapes. The 24mm isn't really wide enough for the latter, so I would tend to use either the 18-55 or the 15-85. But then there's the 10-18....

Any comments?

Is it worthwhile for what? You seem to understand what the focal length numbers mean, so.... You answer the question. Is 10mm worthwhile for you?

I'm undecided; that's why I'm asking what other user's experience has been. Especially those who already have 15mm via the 15-85.

To be frank, you can't ask others that.. Simply because focal length preferencea are personal.

If you feel that 15mm gives you what you need, then no need for a wider lens. If you feel a desire to go wider... Question answered also.

If you have no idea how much wider 10mm is:

The picture that paints a thousand words! Perfect response!

I've got the Canon 10-22 (bought before the 10-18 was introduced). There are two situations where I find the 10mm essential:

1. Really tight spaces like small rooms (most recently, in the museum of the San Juam Bautista Mission).

2. When I need really close shots and don't mind the distortion (most recently, the front end of highly decorated art cars in a show)

For me, having 10mm at my disposal is often indispensible and I'm very happy to have the lens.

Hi,

I have the Canon 17-40 so getting the 10-18 STM was an easier decision for me as there is very little overlap.

IS is great also on this lens, I've been able to take hand held shots at 1 sec. shutter speed, Canon say four stop IS on the 10-18 STM.

The build quality is nowhere near as good as the 17-40L , but the image quality and cost made it a no brainer. I've had loads of fun with the lens.

It's my preferred travelling lens for cityscapes and also landscapes. Together with kit lens and now 24mm due to speed. Be prepared to correct the perspective later. The same for 10-22 I have too. Imho go for it. See my gallery here for samples from 10-22

Yes, very different focal lengths, at the wide end every mm counts.

I use it a lot for landscapes and close places. I used to use the 15-85 but the 10-18 is so much lighter, it's a no brainer to me, especially on my SL1.

I just bought an 80D with an 18 - 135mm lens,and a Sigma 10-20 mm lens

At the time of the purchase, three people were involved. One store clerk I trust, one partner who was putting all this on a company credit card, and me.

I asked for the 10 - 18 for ultrawide purposes.

Clerk says, "buy this Sigma 10- 20 f3.5 for only a little bit more money."

So I did.

This was one of the few times I've covered focal lengths in my head.

My (being purchased then) 18 mm widest angle (if I did not buy an ultrawide in a few minutes) was not extreme enough, for the mood I was in.

Your current widest lens, at 15mm, is noticeably more extreme than an 18.

The question only you can answer is if the ridiculous coverage of the 10-11-12-13 mm range is something you want.

I decided it was.

A shame you listened to the sales person. The Canon cost less, has better optics, and IS. And STM. And weighs less.

Yes it is VERY useful but sucks beyond 10mm according to onlines testing. By 18mm the kit lens is WAY sharper.

The 10-18 STM? I could not disagree with you more. I'm curious as to what online testing you are referring.

My experience with it is that it's extremely sharp, even wide open and at its longest focal length. It has excellent contrast as well.

I have the 15-85 and had been considering the 10-22 but felt it was a lot to spend on a lens I wouldn't use all that much. Then the 10-18 came out so I jumped on it. 10mm is MUCH wider than 15mm. IMO, it's a little less sharp at 18mm but I don't think I've ever used it past 10mm anyway.

Olga, what's your guess...when will Canon make a replacement for the SL1 ?

I hate to buy one now and have them announce a cam that's better in a few months, even if it's mirrorless.

I think it will be mirrorless, and out before Christmas...but how would I know ?
