Hi,
So i currently have a 60D and im going to upgrade to either the 70D or 7D mark II soon. Video is not a concern to me so i dont worry about that. I like the 70D because of the screen which i use often for hard to reach shots or when i use my tripod. However at the same time i love the 7D mark II's 65 auto focus points. All of which are cross type. So im torn between 65 points or a flip screen which seems pointless but is helpful for me. From your experience which would you prefer?

well you would probably have to say more about how you want to use the camera in order to give any useful advice on the subject. I can tell you my experience. I liked the screen on the 70D and the articulation and touch screen and used it for video, and then when it was on a tripod and I needed it in awkward position (high, low etc.). This was especially useful when paired with the iphone app to drive it.

However, I find that with my 7D MKII I only use the 709D as a backup. I just didn't have that frequent a use where those features matter, and the AF features, the joystick, the customizable buttons, the 3 custom buttons, the better ISO performance made a difference in much of what I use the camera for. Also I find I use the eyepiece for a large percentage of my shots, and live views is hard in high ambient light situations. But that is me, and others love the features of the 70D. You are used to same small multi controller, and the articulated screen so might find that you miss it.

So what do you want to do with it?

I have been thinking to sell one of my 70D (wife has the other) and get a 7DII so I can improve my keeper rate for BIF.

Other than that, i rather use the 70D.

I had a 70D but have since upgraded to 7D Mark II. These two are targeted to difference audiences. I use 7D Mark II for birds in flight. The autofocus, frame rate and buffer are awesome. I do miss the flip screen on 70D. It is very useful in sun light. I also miss the touch screen which allows you to switch focus during video recording.

If I had to do it over, I still would get the 7D Mark II. Note: I rarely record videos.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of differences in price. Only you can decide.

I mostly do your general photography. Landscapes, anything while hiking, and portraits. I like the screen on the 70D because some of my shots i use a hard to reach angle. So after thinking about it the 70D seems like a better suit for me. Im mostly attracted to having 65 af points. All of which are cross type af points. But i think 19 should be ok hopefully

Without a doubt the 7D II is the better of the two. The 7D II has way more capability to actually get the shot.

The articulating touchscreen is a must-have for me (and Live view is so much better than any that came before it). The AF is still outstanding, and even though I shoot lots of action (BIFs, sports, kids, etc), the camera is still capable enough to get the shots.

Good luck with your quest,

Keep the 60D for Live View shots and get the 7D II if you really need what it can do. :-)
Well im keeping my 60D and giving to my girlfriend so i'll have the 60D but i wont be using it. Hence why i want the flip screen. It seems like a huge either or. I guess on the bright side either one will be great

I have and use both. For high-speed performance i.e. birds in flight, air shows, fast moving pets or kids, and lower light situations I'll use the 7D II over the 70D.

If I want to travel a little lighter, or know I'll be using a tripod for lower-angle or other shots I'll use the 70D. The rotating LCD is perfect for that. The Wi-Fi is useful on occasion, though on its own certainly not a reason to choose one or the other. I've used the 70D for BIF, but once I got the 7D II there's no reason to.

I do a lot of BIF shooting....so I upgraded from the 6D, to the 70D, and now the 7DM2. I use the 7DM2 for BIF, and the 70D for macro photography (the flippy screen is great for that). I never used the touchy/flippy screen for BIF though the 70D does great at that too (not 7DM2 great, but great compared to the 6D).

Once I started playing with macro, that touch/flippy because a really big deal. I'm fortunately that I don't need to sell of these cameras because I like them all and use them all regularly (they do NOT collect dust).

The 70D is a fantastic camera. The flip/Touch screen is great... so is the wi-fi. I get very sharp images with mine and can't differentiate them from the 7D2 images just by looking. Quiet honestly, the 19 point focusing system on the 70D is great and you won't be disappointed.

The 7D2 is very well built. It has a large buffer for shooting BIF at 10FPS. It's more complicated than the 70D and has a steeper learning curve. It does not have wi-fi and the screen is stationary as you may already know. The F8 AF capability is nice to have at times for using a 2X TC with an F4 lens.

If you don't need the large buffer, 10FPS or F8 AF, then the 70D is a great choice. Otherwise, the 7D2 would be the one to get. I would not be too concerned with the 65 point AF system unless you really need it. The 19 point works just fine and is nicer than the 60D. :-)

+1 on floppy screen for macro and for difficult angles for landscapes sometimes (700d but same principle).
Just got the 7d2 and its focusing abilities are really outstanding, as is the frame rate. Most people do not mention it much but I also love the direct access buttons in the 7d2 including ability to easily lock ambient and flash exposures. With back button focus, gives me total, and very fast control for portraits.

Greetings,

I've never had a camera with a flip screen, it's nothing I've ever missed, but that's me, which I suppose is my point. What we do dictates (or should dictate) the gear we use. That's why I'm doubtful that the advice you receive will have much value.

I hope that whatever you end up with serves you well.

Regards,
Rich

I have and use both, so I consider my comments to be very valid :-)

Get both ;)

It was enough on the 7D, in production for five years.
