I've been looking at the pro 12-40/2.8 for a while but held back.

Prompted by the EM-5 MK 2 announcement, a local store cut their EM5 product prices, including the pro kit with 12-49 pro lens.

But they actually cut it to a price that was about £50 / $75 lower than the price of the lens alone.

So in addition to the cost saving, I got a brand new EM5 for free!!

:-)

I would buy one. The em5 with either 12-40 or 12-50 is a great deal

As a tool (that is to say, cost aside; ahem) i do not find the 12-50 in the same class as the 12-40. They are both almost the same size (the 12-40, being f2.8 and metal, is heavier though).

The problems is -- and i commit a forum sin here since i haven't shot the 12-50 -- all the test reports put the 12-50 right in the middle of typical kit lens territory. At most focal lengths you must stop down from the already slow max to clean up the corners, and resolution drops in the last third of the zoom range. If you are going to put up with that, grab a 14-42 (particularly the Panny version II) and save a lot of weight, cost, and bulk.

The 12-40 (which i have shot the heck out of the past four months) is truly a remarkable optic: sharp corner-to-corner from wide open at every focal length. Its only modest debit in my experience is: don't forget the lens hood outside.

As long as you shoot m4/3 you will never outgrow the 12-40; the 12-50 is basically a tarted up kit lens with some useful features (e.g., 12mm and weather seals). Of course i've always liked tarts, but . . .
