OT - I did it! Ordered the 10D

Amazing. No chance you could drive up and then over? We'd love to meet you in person. We are only about six-eight hours north of Portland. LOL This is the first thing I purchased from them but Roberta Fair who recommended them to me bought lenses from them and was very happy with the service she got. I signed up for financing with them and had to call. The guy on the phone was very friendly and helped me rush the application so I could buy the camera immediately. He also made a point of warning me that I'd have to pay taxes. (They are in WA state) He was very nice. Hope you have a great trip to D.C. Ann
Thanks for the tip, Ann. I checked out their site wondering if they
would ship to an FPO address, and it appears they do, amazingly
enough. (Scratch that reason for not being able to buy it :-)) If I
get it from them, I'll definitely say you referred me. Have you
purchased other things there?

Just don't know what to do yet; I need a new computer (Power Mac G4
w/ dual processor, so $$$) and I want a 10D (but don't need it and
$$$). We are moving from Okinawa to Washington, D.C. in less than a
month (so $$$$$). We're driving cross country from Portland, so
would be nice to have a 10D to see the country with. Hmmm. I
suppose I should wait on the camera to see if I can actually afford
it, but it's so tempting!! Especially after hearing you and Cindy
are jumping on the bandwagon.

... just kidding.... i know it's a big step... and lots of $$$$ too....

i've been living the dSRL life (nikon d1x) for 9 months now and i'm still using a borrowed 28-70 2.8 lens... it's the only lens i use... haven't been able to go out and buy my own lens anyways since i just moved into a new condo in downtown toronto a month ago and had to pretty much buy everything new for it (it was a major downsizing in living space)...
but i digress...

congrats ann and cindy (and shutter and avb) and everyone else who is off to dSLR land...

enjoy the trip eventho at times you may question your decision, your ability, your sanity, your everything...

i haven't really noticed the need for any more post-processing than i did with the 707...

and if you can, get a 1GB CF card or microdrive and shoot RAW... it's fun, it's cool and it can be a lifesaver (well at least a picturesaver)... for the times you mess up (especially exposure and white balance)...
well all the best to all you dslr'ers out there in stf land...

a year from now all of you will have one arm that is way more muscular than the other (my d1x with AFS zoom lens + external flash is like taking pictures with a cinder block... my left arm hurts just thinking about it)... lucky for me i'm more a studio photographer than a landscape/outdoor photographer...

good luck with those canon dSLR's... once again i'm the oddball, odd man out with my nikon... oh well...
later...

You'd love the 75-300mm/f4-5.6 IS then. Wasn't too expensive either.
Having 10X with my C700, I'd want at least 300mm to match my 380mm.
Have the wide range and then the extreme range. Would cost more
though. That's why I wait a few more years until I'm just investing
in the glass, and not $1500 in the body. : ) Still a great price
now a days, but out of my range for what I want. Just think. In 2-3
years, DSLRs should be around $800. Then I can invest the $700 I
save on glass.

Heck, by then I might just get a D30 for even cheaper : )

It'll be awhile before I'll really have time to play with it... graduation Fri. A PT Cruiser deally Saturday. Maybe on Sunday for starters. :) Ann
I wish you the very best of success with your new magnificent tool,
your 10D

Mark J
With the 10D you multiply by 1.6 to get the 35mm equivalent. So
28-135 is more like 45-216 whereas the Sony is 38-190 in 35
equivelent terms. That's why I also got the Sigma 15-30 -
equivalent to 24-48. Should give me the full range but I will have
to change lenses to achieve it. :) Ann

Well, we might actually make it up there; you're in Bellingham, aren't you? We always drive up to Seattle for a day to meet up with a friend from B.C. and because I like to go shopping at Nordstrom's main store :-), so a couple of extra hours might be doable. I'd love to meet you and Arvin in person as well, although I feel I know you already :-). We're leaving Okinawa on July 6, "directly" to Portland to stay with my mother-in-law for a week, then drive down to San Francisco (past Mt. Shasta, Cindy!) to see my family and off to D.C. via what route I'm not quite sure (one that has hotels that accept dogs, preferably, otherwise we'll be sleeping in the car a lot). If your email is on this site, I'll contact you from Portland and let you know when we might be able to get up there.

That's good to hear about onecall.com; recommendations from you and Roberta would be enough for me. Gee, maybe I could order it while in Portland -- shouldn't take long to get to me and there'd be no sales tax. And financing?? Hmmm. Just what I don't need to do right now -- spend a couple of thousand dollars on my hobby when our house needs fixing up! Oh well, I bet I do; we can play with our cameras in Bellingham!

Hey Rob,

How are you? I haven't seen your name around here for a long time. Of course, I haven't been around here a lot for a long time -- just too much to do.

Do you still have the G3 (or was it G2? I can't remember)? What ever happened with your STF San Francisco meeting so long ago? Did it ever come off? I lost track.

Yes, I'm really torn -- don't need the D10 but want it badly. And everybody around here jumping on the D10 bandwagon isn't making it any easier!

We'll be in Marin around the middle of July if you have time to have another no-food breakfast :-).

I did a candid portrait session the other day and the last 7 pics in this gallery are from it. Some

http://www.pbase.com/fremiet/portraits

are taken with the 1D and some with the 717. That info is in the exif file below the pic. The scooter one is a 1D shot.

I kept them all a bit soft...but it might be an interesting comparison. Take a look.

Fremiet
I had two inquiries to night about kid shots - candids (not studio
type portraits) and I need a faster camera to capture these kind of
shots. Maybe it's me, but I follow my 21/2 year old nephew around
and I basically get a blur. Plus the shutter lag is so slow he's
already jumped me before I can take the picture.

I feel like I'll lose a whole summer. And doesn't it mean, if they
announce in late Summer, that the products won't really be
available until around Christmas? If I do a good job with some of
these kid things (especially with the ritzy clientele I might be
able to get) I might have enough money to buy the new canon and
sell the 10D.

Talk me out of it Uly - tell me there's something SIGNIFICANTLY
better coming soon. I didn't upgrade to the 717 specifically
because I had a DSLR in mind. With the learning curve I'm
anticipating, the 10D will probably be fine for me for a few years
before I'll be bored and need an upgrade. By then, who knows what
will be out there.

But I'm willing to be talked out of it - please, please, I'm
begging you! ;-)

C

ps - I still think I'm heading out to B&H tomorrow - if only just
to test it - I never did find a Best Buy that had a 10D in stock.

Ann,

Call them back and get the Sigma 17-35 instead! You can attach filters to the 15 - 30 but any more then one and you get vignetting like crazy whereas the 17 - 35 does not have this problem and both are very good optically!
I just committed myself to mucho $ for the 10D and two lenses.
Sigma 15-30 and Canon 28-135. I plan to keep my Sony 717 too as I
know there will be situations where I'll want a more portable
camera. Phew! I graduate with an AA in graphic design on Friday and
this is my (big) present to myself for three years of hard work.
('Course I was kinda planning to get one anyhow.) I originally
planned only to get one lens but I learned that I'm getting an
award on Friday that almost pays for the second lens. Didn't take a
second to decide to get both. Now I've got a big learning curve
ahead of me. (Another good reason to keep the 717.) Everything is
supposed to arrive Thursday. I bought the camera from onecall.com
and the lenses and a case from B&H. (They didn't have the body in
stock.) I'll post when I get a few pictures. :) Ann

I know I can get good things with the 707 - but they're few and far between with moving kids.

I don't know - I'm really torn. I guess I'll have to go and do more research!

Thanks for the link to compare - they really are beautiful shots.
Best,

Thanks Joe -

you know, I don't do a lot of wide angle stuff - hardly any landscapes at all. Mostly I do Macro work and cadid portraits, so I thought I'd go this way. I figured the 28-135 was a nice all around lens and the macro I felt I had to have because I shoot those A LOT. I've been reading up on the 100mm for portraits as well, although my good friend who's a wedding photographer keeps trying to talk me into the 85mm f/1.8 or the 50mm. I figured I'd start out with these and see where they take me.

LOL - the money is KILLING me - but hey, at least I didn't go L!?!

Thanks again,
Cara

I'm so sorry Jim! I was actually trying to make myself feel better because Joe kind of made me feel bad. I'm sorry if that backfired into making you feel bad LOL!

Oops, didn't mean to make you feel bad. Sorry. I was just curious because I'm in research mode for 10D lenses for myself, and I think that when I get the 10D or its successor, I'll probably get the 28-135 as well. I also like to shoot macros, but would like a wider angle for tighter indoorsituations as well as outdoor landscapes. So, I wanted to know your thinking behind your lens choices. Although I would like to get the 100mm, I think my second lens would be the 17-35/2.8L (as long as I'm just fantasizing, there's no bill for my wife to see so I can go L). What do you think?

In any event, I'd like to get feedback from you on the 100mm after you get a chance to play with it for portraits as well as macros.

Cheers,
Joe

It's okay Joe - I didn't really feel too bad -- but you did get me thinking. Maybe I do need a wide angle....

I'm going to have to work so hard to pay for all this stuff I'll never be able to take pictures!

Battery is still charging.
I'll definitely let you know how the macro works out.

Cara!

Wow...another STFer goed 10D!!!

I have the 28-135IS and the 100mm macro. I've been using the macro every day this week. It is hard to get a lot of DOF with it when you are really closeup. You need quite a bit of light but since you bought the flash, you can use it off to the side and that should do the trick. Let me know how the flash works for macro. The 100mm is great for many other shots as well. I have some new shots in my 10D gallery that were taken with the macro. One is a landscape.

Have fun!
