OT - I did it! Ordered the 10D

Thanks for the tip, Ann. I checked out their site wondering if they would ship to an FPO address, and it appears they do, amazingly enough. (Scratch that reason for not being able to buy it :-)) If I get it from them, I'll definitely say you referred me. Have you purchased other things there?

Just don't know what to do yet; I need a new computer (Power Mac G4 w/ dual processor, so $$$) and I want a 10D (but don't need it and $$$). We are moving from Okinawa to Washington, D.C. in less than a month (so $$$$$). We're driving cross country from Portland, so would be nice to have a 10D to see the country with. Hmmm. I suppose I should wait on the camera to see if I can actually afford it, but it's so tempting!! Especially after hearing you and Cindy are jumping on the bandwagon.

That was REALLY nice of you to be thinking of me, John.

I live in Clearwater on the Gulf Of Mexico side of Florida, approx.

an hour and a half to two hours away.... depending on traffic on what I call the road to madness ....... Interstate 4 (I-4).

So, if you consider that close... he he

If you feel like taking a drive in this direction and taking a break from the busy Orlando area, you just let me know, K?

Be good,
Mark J
Mark, I'm going to be in Orlando with the boys for the Jr. Oly Tae
Kwon Do championships in which they are both competing, Plus a
soccer tournament....The Disney something or other tournament.

Don't you live close to Orlando?? If so any chance of getting
together for a shootout :0)
Two reminders about the 1.6 mag factor I'd totally forgotten about,
based on the chip. Thank you for reminding me Cindy.

Have a nice day,
Mark J
Are you really going satisfied with a 135 mm as your longest
possible zoom range? Your F7X7 zoom exceeds the 135 mm range now,
so you are going to be scaling back on your range.
Mark - due to the sensor size multiply the lengths by 1.6 - so Ann
is actually getting a - 200+ and my 200 will be more like 320.
Also, more lenses can be added over time as money allows. :)

Don't worry about it, Ann. We ALL do that from time to time... you can't read all the posts, all the time :-)

I wish you the very best of success with your new magnificent tool,
your 10D

Mark J
With the 10D you multiply by 1.6 to get the 35mm equivalent. So
28-135 is more like 45-216 whereas the Sony is 38-190 in 35
equivelent terms. That's why I also got the Sigma 15-30 -
equivalent to 24-48. Should give me the full range but I will have
to change lenses to achieve it. :) Ann

Mark: Not a chance we can get away what with 2 tournaments going on, though we will have a car for tooling around Orlando. Last year Jim and I got together when the boys were fighting in the Metrodome....soooo I was just wondering....too bad.

This is a matter of some disagreement in CSTF but from my pov the
jpeg images from the 1D are just about as good as the RAW
ones....the RAW is also a bit of a fiddle....so! so far I've shot
in JPEG hi res 90% of the time. My advice is not to worry about
RAW till much later....or do a comparative test...I think you'll
see what I mean.
Master the camera's controls, focus system, dealing with lenses, etc. This takes some time and patience. Once that's down, try a few RAW shots.

When you do begin to experiment with RAW (actually CRW "Canon RaW") you should install the Capture One DSLR L.E. trial. It works for 15 days so wait to install it until you're serious about playing with RAW. Then you can compare Canon's File Viewer Utility (FVU, included with camera) against C1LE (US$89). Personally I love the C1LE workflow and am a registered user.

In summary, get good with JPEG's and then try some RAW's.. you'll be impressed.

Congrats on the AA, Ann! And congrats on the new camera!

After attempting to take wedding photos this past weekend, and especially trying to take action pictures of the Yankees-Cubs game at Wrigley Field, I realized that I may need some sort of digital SLR.

The thing is, I'm very hesitant to go for the DSLR. It's not that I wouldn't use it; I know that I could use its capabilities and still use my beloved 707 too. I'm just too darn cheap. I don't want to shell out the money.

I agree with Ulysses -- I'll wait until September to see what comes out by then.

I just committed myself to mucho $ for the 10D and two lenses.
Sigma 15-30 and Canon 28-135. I plan to keep my Sony 717 too as I
know there will be situations where I'll want a more portable
camera. Phew! I graduate with an AA in graphic design on Friday and
this is my (big) present to myself for three years of hard work.
('Course I was kinda planning to get one anyhow.) I originally
planned only to get one lens but I learned that I'm getting an
award on Friday that almost pays for the second lens. Didn't take a
second to decide to get both. Now I've got a big learning curve
ahead of me. (Another good reason to keep the 717.) Everything is
supposed to arrive Thursday. I bought the camera from onecall.com
and the lenses and a case from B&H. (They didn't have the body in
stock.) I'll post when I get a few pictures. :) Ann

Hi John,

Yes, back to DC. We have an old house on Capitol Hill that we haven't lived in for 12 years -- don't know how we are going to fit into it after living in a "mansion" (well, literally, I guess) in Okinawa!

It would be really nice to get together -- you're in Fairfax or somewhere around there?

It'll be strange being back in the States after Australia, Tokyo, Ankara and Okinawa. Hope I can find something to photograph :-))

Oh, Arlington is better; just across the bridge; easy from Capitol Hill! We have lived there several times over the past 20 years, so not completely foreign to me.

Funny, I've always enjoyed photography (well, P&S), but looking back at my pics I see that I really didn't take much in the District (except our cute little house) and its environs. So I think this will be an entirely new photographic experience for me. Actually, I love Washington, so I think I'll enjoy seeing it through "new" eyes.

I have to laugh; in planning our drive cross country, I can't help but think, oh, who from STF lives here? Maybe we should go through Washington, or Ohio, or Chicago etc. and meet so-and-so. Probably won't happen, but at least I'm sure you and I can get together1

I knew I was REALLY cooked when I woke up in the middle of the
night and said to myself "I really can't afford this now." When
that happens I KNOW I'm going to buy it anyhow. ;) Ann
I know EXACTLY what you mean - also, tonight I was at the book group I moderate and showed off some pictures of my new niece and had two inquiries for kid shots. I know I can't do it with my 707 - I try, but I just can't catch those pesky toddlers who don't stop moving. And I'm really into candids, not more formal portraits, so I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet.

I know I should wait like Ulysses said, but I can't, can't, can't - the URGE is too strong!!!

Best to you Ann (and Cindy) - I hope you have great success!

I had two inquiries to night about kid shots - candids (not studio type portraits) and I need a faster camera to capture these kind of shots. Maybe it's me, but I follow my 21/2 year old nephew around and I basically get a blur. Plus the shutter lag is so slow he's already jumped me before I can take the picture.

I feel like I'll lose a whole summer. And doesn't it mean, if they announce in late Summer, that the products won't really be available until around Christmas? If I do a good job with some of these kid things (especially with the ritzy clientele I might be able to get) I might have enough money to buy the new canon and sell the 10D.

Talk me out of it Uly - tell me there's something SIGNIFICANTLY better coming soon. I didn't upgrade to the 717 specifically because I had a DSLR in mind. With the learning curve I'm anticipating, the 10D will probably be fine for me for a few years before I'll be bored and need an upgrade. By then, who knows what will be out there.

But I'm willing to be talked out of it - please, please, I'm begging you! ;-)

C

ps - I still think I'm heading out to B&H tomorrow - if only just to test it - I never did find a Best Buy that had a 10D in stock.

I hear you.

I'm in the same boat. but maybe leaning towards the smaller body of the Pentax *istD
I wish canon has a DRebel

Rob

PS - Hope you are well
I keep going back and forth on the 10D; first I wanted it, then I
decided who wants to go back to lugging a heavy camera and lenses.
Then last weekend, the salesman opened up the cabinet, gave me some
media to use and let me play with it. And I fell in love with it! I
wouldn't buy it here because of the Japanese warranty, but I found
myself checking out the B&H site the other night...

I love this area. Whatcom doesn't have any official photography classes (toward a degree) but we do have a couple in our "community ed" program. I took one on the digital darkroom and found it very helpful. I haven't looked into Western's degree programs. Whatcom's design degree is very much focused on computer design and aimed an job seeking more than fine art. Unfortunately the area does not abound in jobs for designers at the moment. Whatcom has a great culture of student support. Western is a less supportive, more "on your own" kind of place. Both are fine institutions as far as the education offered there. At Whatcom we have more students than classes so it will take awhile to get the specific classes you want if they are popular ones. Western has a website at http://www.wwu.edu and whatcom's is http://www.whatcom.ctc.edu . I'd say the hardest thing about this area is finding a good job. The best thing is how incredibly beautiful it is here. If you are an outdoor person there is very much to do. And if you like classical music the place is full of it. We also have a great turn of the century theater where they bring in musicals and other events. If you come by for a visit, let me know. Except for during the Festival of Music in late July and early August, we always welcome guests. :) Ann
i have been looking into moving to that exact area (don't have my
husband convinced yet!), and i have looked a little into western
washington u. my thought is possibly biology degree going towards
zoology or the sort, but lately i am thinking again how i would
love to get into photography for a career. are there any good
programs in the area for that? and can you offer any advice about
wwu or whatcom community in general? oh, and i am certainly no
artist, so i couldn't go the type of route you did!

anything you could offer would be greatly appreciated - i just have
this huge fascination with that area, but it is a long way from
home for me!

sorry for the questions, but i just had to inquire
thanks, Lee
oh and happy move in together anniversary!
