I am not a fan of it and I use it only when very much needed, but I have just accidentally discovered that this 10x digital zoom feature works not only on PRIME lenses as I had thought, but also on ZOOM lenses. I tried it with different factors, and 3-4x digital zoom is not that bad with the 55-200 mm lens!!

Since when? I used to have the NEX-5 and that could not do it. Is it a 5N feature that I missed, or a firmware update?

My Nex-5 has digital zoom, but it's very clumsy to use.

On the 5n, I set the Precise Digital Zoom to the B button. It's easy to use. Just hit B and you are there.

Note: Zoom only works if you are using jpg quality. It does not work if you are set to raw or are in movie mode. Check the manual.

On the 5r Sony added a new feature, Clear Image Zoom, for up to 2x that claims little or no degradation in image quality. Once you go past 2x it reverts to the normal digital zoom with image degradation.

Mine also had, but I could use it only with the 16mm pencake. Can you also use the digital zoom with Zoom lenses?

This is useful, thanks very much! :-)

Alright, you guys have my curiosity peaked.

I'm sitting here with the user's manual in front of me and still can't find anything referencing a digital zoom.

Is this something that's part of the video function?

EDIT: never mind, I found it. I learn something new every day.
