I would be grateful if any of you who have owned (or still own) both the Canon D60 and Canon 10D can answer this question: have you encountered any lens that works correctly with the D60 but does not work correctly with the 10D?

Is it gauranteed that a lens that is compatible with the D60 will be equally compatible with the 10D (in terms of the electrical contacts, AF functionality, etc)?

The reason I ask, is that I have a 10D and am considering buying a lens that I have been told has been successfully tested (by the manufacturer) on the D60 but not yet tested on the 10D.

Many thanks for whatever info you can provide.

Terry.

This may differ from camera to camera but on MY 10D the following Canon lenses have been used and tested for focussing problems and none of them have front or rear focussed -->

16-35L
28-70L
28-135IS
35-105 F3.5-4.5 Pump Zoom from 1987
50mm Mk1 F1.8 prime from 1987
75-300IS
100mm F2.8 USM Macro
80-200L F2.8
80-200 F4-5.6

the only time I've EVER had a front rear focussing problem was with a 1992 vintage Tokina 20-35 F3.5-4.5 Mk1, but that RF'd on my Elan-7E also ..

Thanks for the reply Adam, you have a pretty good selection of lenses there.

If it's a Canon EF lens, then it is GUARANTEED to work 100% with ANY EOS body. Can be the latest, greatest IS supertele on the oldest EOS 620 or it can be the oldest 50 F1.8 mk I (like Adam-T's and mine which both date from 1987) on the newest 10D.

If it's a third party lens, there's no guarantees.

I have both a D60 and a 10D with several SIgma and Canon lenses. The D60 works well with all lenses; the 10D works well with the Canon lenses but it does NOT work with my Sigma lenses. I went to the dealer to test the 10D with more Sigma lenses and I found it working with some of them.

Talking with Sigma people they said that I have to send them the lenses to be "adjusted". That's what I have done.

Canon 24-85
Canon 100mm Macro
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Canon 28-135 IS (works BETTER)
Canon 70-200 F/4L
Tokina 20-35mm 3.5-4.5
Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX Asph.

So I haven't seen anything wrong with any lens I own.

Did you get the memo?

do you happen to know how the AF speed & accuracy in low light/low contrast situations of the 100mm Macro compares to the 100mm F2??

The 10D appears to be sensitive to the same lenses that the Elan 7/Eos 30 is. Certain older Sigmas will need a chip upgrade to work correctly.

Thanks, that's interesting since it demonstrates that Canon have changed the lens contacts/protocols/electrical characteristics between the D60 and the 10D so that it cannot be guaranteed that a lens (from a non-Canon manufacturer) will work correctly on the 10D even when it is known to work correctly on the D60, which answers my question -- thanks.

I have this lens and the 24-85 zoom and the 50mm consistently under-exposes by one half stop (maybe 2/3) on my new 10D (my first DSLR). That doesn't seem right to me, should I send the lens to Canon for repair?

The 35-105 Pump I got for Rach but she didn't need it so I re-sold it for what I paid (Damn good lens that was) - the 80-200 F4-5.6 is hers, and not bad too for £25 ;-)

I've only used a borrowed 100F2 briefly to take a few portraits on film but I hazard a guess that it will focus faster in low light due to the lack of travel in the focussing range compared to the Macro USM (which travels a long way even with the limiter on) - the Macro USM focusses very fast if it's in the ball park, in fact it Snaps into focus, it's only when it has to rack from end to end that it takes it's time - but then that's no prob either as it has FULL TIME Manual Focus which means that you can quickly twist it into the ballpark yourself while holding the thing, the focus ring is big and exactly in the right place for tricks like this :)))

however for the sake of a minascule amount of smaller aperture and £100 I'd go for the macro every time as it's a vastly more versatile lens - the 100F2 in theory SHOULD be slightly sharper (otherwise why bother to have it in the range) but I've never seen them head to head so I don't know..

As it happens it was proved today - we BOTH use old lenses on modern cameras, but the Reg't Captain wanted to get a shot of the RHQ exterior and pulled out a 650 with a 50Mk1 on -- I lent him my 16-35L to get a wider view and it worked just fine :))) ..

It's only older Sigmas to beware of with the 10D in particular (which even doesn't work with some EX lenses unless they've been chipped) - but they have to be really old not to work with a D30, D60 or EOS30
