POST A REALLY GOOD ZOOM EXAMPLE - Please!

Dave,

Those shots are VERY impressive hand-held at such a long focal length. What shutterspeed were you using?

I have a Nikkor 70-300 f4-f5.6, and have camera shake problems hand-held except at extremely high shutterspeeds. (which is hard, given the fact that the lens is rather slow at 300 mm.)

How much do you think the VR helps?

Thanks Brent,

My camera is a D1x and the Heron and Snow Geese were at 400 mm and
the deer were at 180 mm. I have not found a sweet spot but I have
gotten shots with this lens that would have been missed If I had to
use a tripod.

Wellt he way it was explained to me:

80-200mm = 1.5x 80 and 1.5x 200

I am probably missing something...
I like the 1.5 factor as it will take me a bit further with the 80-200

But I think the 2.8 will give me the quality I want....

How about a 80/400 2.8 VR...

Hmmmm....

Its a tough one I can get both at a great price were they are only
about 100 buvks differance..

I will probably end up with both - but for now I will be shooting
more Glamour than sports - so maybe the 2.8 is the best way to go..
What is most important to you... 2.8 or the 400mm??

Like many, I have both lenses. Each for different type of assignments.

Time to go buy some lenses...

Probably get a 2.8 80-200 AFS since I do not have any 2.8 lenses..

Then a Prime of 85 F1.4

Then the VR....

But I am still debating...

I really need the Glamour more than sports tright now and thats why the 2.8 is looing like a better investment.....

Hey Jason :-)

Stop posting pictures ;-) Its time for you to share your knowledge too. How about some webpages about your shooting technique?
Those pictures are of tremenduous quality!

Duncan,

The Heron was shot at 1/500 sec. f8 ISO 400, The Deer 1/320 f5 ISo 400, and the Snow geese at 1/3000 f7.1 ISO 400.

The VR does work and helps alot. I doubt that it makes any difference at 1/3000 Sec. though.

Here's a nice portrait taken with the 80-400VR. Even with a B+W WZ-1 soft focus filter and reduced 50% for the web, this is a good example of what this lens can do as a "people lens". This shot was at either f/11 or f/13,and it shows good resolving power even with the soft-focus filter shot in-studio and a lot of light bouncing around.

You are taking some beautiful photos, Jason. You have some corkers in your gallery. This one is still my favorite:

Ok I need to buy a really good zoom lens :
Here are the options:

80-400VR or the 80-200 AFS 2.8 ED IFS
The 80-200 AFS is a really good zoom lens with fast focus, the 80-400 is a good lens with great VR, pretty slow focus and a lousy tripod collar.

If you need the range of the 80-400, or can't afford a 80-200 + 300/4 + TC-2E, or want just one lens -buy the 80-400!

But looking at my pictures taken with a 80-400 won't tell you if it's as good as a 80-200 AFS.

Here's some great links worth reading (run the french ones trough http://www.google.com/language_tools ):

But I can tell you this: I can carry my 80-400 a whole day, didn't do that with my 80-200 and 300/4 or 300/2.8!

Well we are in major disagreement about what is sharp. I do believe my surfer shots were soft. These shots have classic Bayer softness - just look at all the feathers - nothing is sharp. Of course it could be the image size or the compression. They are very pleasing pictures though.

I don't see much detail in the feathers and not a lot of sharpness.
It's been a while since the weathers been clear whilst I'm not
stuck at work so I quickly poped over the local park..

This is with the Sigma 50-500 EX HSM APO (could they get anymore
letters in there?)

all hand held @ 500mm

pretty much 70% of my Gallery now consists of the 50-500 shots
(Tamron 70-300 for the rest)

Ok - that is a bit circular.....

So you really like the 80-400VR

But it might not be as good as the 80/200 AFS

But you think the 80/400 is a better all around carry it around and use it all day lens than the 80/200

How the heck do you catch such great, sharp shots... handheld ...with a lens that weighs four pounds?? Is weightlifting a hobby?? :)

Really depends on what you plan to do with the lens. I, for one, use the 80 - 400 VR for soccer pictures and other sport action shots. Most of them are taken in the 300 ~ 400 range, and many of those at 400. Even those at 400 require some cropping. So, my thinking is, with the 200 mm lens, I would need to crop much more, and I am not certain whether the cropping/enlarging required with a 200 mm lens, for the type of sport pictures I shoot with my zoom lens, would lead to better printed images that what I get now with my 80 - 400 VR that requires much less cropping.

Of course, if I were a portrait photographer, the 80 - 200 at 2.8 would be a vastly superior lens, or better yet, the VR variant supposedly availabe in April.

You will probably end up needing both, like most of us, and which one to get first depends on what you plan to do with the lens.
