Can the D700 EXIF Shutter Count Be Wrong?

I just received an eBay camera from another photographer whose ad said the D700 had "only 6,700 shots with 140,000 to go". I just checked the EXIF using Opanda IEXEF, Photoshop CS5 and regex.info/exef.cgi. They all say the camera has 207,774 shots! Is this possible?

no :-((

Hi Eric,

The number of shutter actuation of 200.000+ is quite possible. 6700 is very low, depending on when the camera is newly bought in relation to the price of course.

May I ask what you paid for?

The internal counter can only be reset/changed by Nikon itself.

as Fred stated contact the seller, if he won't take it back, then contact Ebay as it was a very false description. If the aution didn't state the actuations, hopefully you have the email that does.

Are you aware that over the weekend Nikon knocked the D700 price down to $2199 and removed the Nikon MAP standardized pricing requirments which means that the sellers can now sell it for even less than $2199 so you may see the D700 for less than $2000 shortly.

Was the shutter recently replaced? If so then there might be some truth to it

Something like that should be mentioned by the seller.

It might be a refurbished camera, the shutter count is never reset not in refurbished camera's and not with camera's after heavy repair or replacement of any kind of parts.

If it was replaced by Nikon, I believe they would have reset the count.

I was afriad of this. I paid $1,800 for it last week. And if it had 6,700 actuations, I'd still be happy. But the CF door is also worn smooth and shiny from obvious heavy use. I can't believe someone would try to pass this off.

I've written the seller with the information and waiting a response. I asked for a refund. If I don't hear in 24 hours, I'll take it up through eBay and PayPal.

People like this undermine selling used camera sales for all of us. I always use as much integrity and honesty in my ads as I can imagine when I sell. I want to be able to trust sellers, but this makes me uneasy for future transactions.

Thanks for all the input. Unbeleivable.

The seller answered a question to another bidder and said it was 6 months old new, still had warranty on it, and told another that it was USA.

Seller lied about count it seems. Even if refurbished not sure how seller would know what count was without checking like you did.

I always ask for a recent photo taken with the camera to verify. I do this on craigslist too and most people do not send a photo- hmmm. If you buy in person bring your laptop to check shutter count with a photo you just took. Unfortunately, cameras do not display mileage like cars.

Go and get your money back! Even with a new shutter with 6700 the count shows higher and your camera is worth far less- who would buy it for any good price? Then wait a month if you can because price will drop with new msrp.

There have been reports here of Nikon service centers in the USA zeroing the actuation count when a shutter is replaced.

Believe it- about half of my purchases on Ebay for camera gear in the past turned out not as described- to the point of returning some. That is after I ask questions too.
This is a case of fraud actually.

Hi eric,

Feel sorry for you.

I had once a similar experience with a very old MF lens. It wasn't really the quality I was promised by the seller, and this was a physical store doing business online, even then it took quite some time before they took it back.

If I buy used (in my case, I'm a collector of (rare) photo books) I visit the person or if he trusts me enough I buy after seller sends it to me and I pay the seller afterwards including the sending costs. Or I visit the person.

If I sell stuff myself, I always place advertisements in photography related forums, where people at least know each other for some time and I always ask the potentional buyer to coem by and check it out. I never send any kind of camera equipment to sell.

No more E-Bay, marktplaats and other services for used products for me, by means of buying and selling it indirectly by web and post mail.

Hi Robin,

That is very odd. I've asked Nikon Japan about it, and they said they never do it. It's even more odd if they do it only sometimes and that it is for refurbished camera's not even a standard procedure (setting it to 0 or keeping it as it is)

That's all really good advice. I guess the seller just assumed or hoped that his buyer wouldn't check this? Yeah, I think it is time to drop off eBay from now on.
