Fianl updates to E-M5 preview

Yes please, can you clarify things concerning the sensor ?

The specifications are incomplete, can you tell the maximum number of pixels we can get for each format, rather than only for 4:3 ratio.
Those are being added to the database (and I'll update the preview shortly). There are 40 permutations which take quite a while to dig out of the camera but I think I've got them all.

All aspect ratios are smaller than the maximum 4:3 size, which adds further weight to what we managed to get out of Olympus - that it isn't the GH2 sensor.

With a manual lens on, does it disable focus magnification with a half shutter press? I hate to think that my many gentle messages to Olympus have fallen on deaf ears. Also, per someone else correcting me, and as awesome as that would be if true, the sensor is most likely not CMOS. Might want to correct your data sheet.

I'm trying to add a few extra details to the E-M5 preview, to clear up uncertainties.

Are there any specific questions that I need to cover (I can't promise to address everything as I only have a pre-production camera, so can't comment on performance).

There is a typo in DPR's E-M5 specs (not in the preview). "Other resolutions" starts with "4068x3072", but it should probably be 4608x3072 (= 3:2) instead, and the 16:9 aspect ratio is missing.

I'd like to see a picture of the bottom of the camera. ideally how the battery compartment door opens/closes/type of latch to obtain weather sealing.
It's the same design as the E-5, only smaller. I'll see if there's an image.

The specifications are incomplete, can you tell the maximum number of pixels we can get for each format, rather than only for 4:3 ratio. This is to clear up things concerning the assertion of Kirk Tuck at visual science lab, who seems to imply that the OM-D has a multi aspect sensor like the GH2 ?
Since the GH2's sensor is over 18 megapixels and this one is 16, it's a pretty safe assumption this is NOT the same sensor as the GH2.
That is what I thought untill I read the Kirk Tuck report. The number of pixels quoted by DPreview is also exactly the same as what they quote for the 4:3 ratio on the GH2 and both the GH2 and the OM-D have very fast read outs of the sensor. It may be a coincidence and may be the Olympus folk interviewed by Kirk Tuck misunderstood the question, whatever this is now circulating on the web and quoting the pixels sizes of the different format ratio would help clarify that definitively. Hence my suggestion.

Thanks for this preview of the E-M5 a superb camera (Will be ordering) BLACK

How is bracketing setup (Menu I presume) More to the point can Bracketing be turned on / off as easily as on the GH2.
--
Go to Menu. Choose Camera Menu 2. Choose Bracketing, Choose AE Bracketing, select the number of frames and the size of the intervals you want.

The choices are:
Off
2f 0.3EV, 2f 0.7EV, 2f 1.0EV,
3f 0.3EV, 3f 0.7EV, 3f 1.0EV,
5f 0.3EV, 5f 0.7EV, 5f 1.0EV,
7f 0.3EV, 7f 0.7EV.

So it's not quick but you get a reasonable amount of control.

Until now, Panasonic cameras correct for CA problems shown by m43 lenses, Olympus cameras don't.

How does the E-M5 behave in that respect?

Many thanks for clearing that out. It is what I've always thought. But we all like to be pleasantly surprised !

Anyway, what counts rather than the multi aspect sensor is its quality, raws included.

1. Does it AF 4/3rds lenses like the 50-200mm?

(edit): already answered above. Thanks. Looks like a step in the right direction, but not seamless. How big a step, I'll wait and see with a production model and the new adapter from Olympus.

2. Is the EVF great? How about compared to the VF2 or the GH2?

3. Does the AF track moving objects better? Maybe you can't say yet.

4. Any info on the endurance of the power (batteries) with the grip attached?

Thanks for the already great write up. I have not been this excited about a camera since the...(can't remember). I think this is the D300 of mirrorless. If marketed right, it's a gooooooooaaal!

Cheers,
Seth

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I have read that somewhere, but is that official from Olympus? Or is it just the same optics as in the VF-2? Faster frame rate?

Very like the E-P3 since there is no hard button on/off it means using a myset1 2 etc

As we say downunder Thanks Mate !!! :)

I'm trying to add a few extra details to the E-M5 preview, to clear up uncertainties.

Kudos on a terrific EM-5 preview, you folks get a great job of sorting through a ton of information. Thanks!

Can the camera show live view without "slide show behaviour" at the fastest fps with or without AF working?

That's not one I can answer, I'm afraid.

+1 on this question. Also, can one of the buttons be customized to take the camera into magnified view (for manual focus lenses) regardless of which live view screen you are in?

Also again for manual focus lenses, can the live view magnification be enabled using touch screen? (As in you press one area of the picture, it gets magnified so you can focus manually)? If so, how do you get out of magnified view (Tim F 101's question).
