MC-EU1 remote protocol, PalmOS remote for Coolpix

The link below will take you to a site where you can download the software, and will also explain how to use it and what cables you need.

You'll need the Nikon SC-EW3 serial cable. The best price I found for it was at eppersonphoto.com about $36 with shipping.

You'll need a serial cable for your CLIE. If you get a serial hotsync cable for the CLIE, you'll also need null modem adapter to hook the two cables together. Depending on which cable exactly you get for the CLIE, you may also need a gender changer to connect the two cables. In my case, I bought a serial hotsync cable for the CLIE because it was a lot cheaper, and then I made a null modem adapter that also took care of the cable gener mismatch I had, but you don't have to make one, you can buy it.

Hope this helps,
Rodney
Thank you
Eddie
Hi,

Here is a link to some informatiions I found about the MC-EU1
serial protocol :

http://vyskocil.free.fr/coolcom/

You can find there, applications for PalmOS in very alpha stage but
useable to remote control the Coolpix family of camera !

All information about MC-EU1 is welcome !

Cool remote works great on my Sony CLIE with Palm OS 3.5.2 and my
5700 - thanks for providing it.
I'm happy it works for you ! Could you tell me the CLIE model ? I had few bad report with new Clie (OS 4). Could you also tell me what serial cable you used ?

Thanks
Vladimir.

I must confess that all this tech talk confuses me. I have a
coolpix 5700 and a NEW Clie PEG-NX70V with palm OS 5 .
I never tried CoolRemote on PalmOS 5 because I only own a 3.5.3 PalmOS. I must try it with POSE, the palm OS emulator and a PalmOS5 rom...

I have a CLIE PEG-N710C. It's very similar to the N760C, and I think it's likely that any N Series Clie would work similarly. I don't have OS 4, so I can't say anything about it.

In addition to the Nikon SC-EW3 cable, I used a serial hotsync cable for the Clie N series. As both cables had female DB9 connectors, I also had to use a gender changer to connect them. Since I used a hotsync cable rather than a regular serial cable, I also had to make a null modem adapter. I did the null modem and gender corrections by making a simple adapter using two male DB9 connectors. I swapped pins 2 and 3, and wired pin 5 (ground) straight. Those are the only connections required by the adapter. I used a serial hotsync cable rather than a regular serial cable because they are much less expensive, and parts for my null modem gender changer were only $3.

Hope this information is useful. Thank you for making the software available. All my friends are impressed with the cool things I can make the camera do fromt he Clie. I'm eager for any additional capabilty you can build into the software.

Could you mine give me some info. about of UC-E1,
because I can't succeed make that.
if the GND pin 2 & 4 connect together (UC-E1), Then
the LCD Display will trun off and the cam will be hang.

How Can I do ?
Thx .
After much fiddling I've succeeded in modifying my UC-E1 cable and
an extra cradle to successfully control my 4500 with this program.
I took some pictures throughout the modifications and will post the
details to my website shortly for anyone who would be interested in
my method.

Used version 0.26 and everything appears to be working great!
Great work on this program Vladimir!

The LCD will turn off when pin 2 and 4 are connected on the camera - that's normal. What you need to do then is connect the palm to the serial cable and hit "connect" on the software. If the cable's setup right, then the program will connect and the LCD will come back on, giving you full control via both the normal camera controls and the palm.
How Can I do ?

How about a serial-USB cable for palm? Have enyone tryed this setup?

http://shop.brando.com.hk/m505ycable.php
It should work now ! Someone reported success with 5700 and palm
m105 (only zoom was not working for him).
but the m515 has a native usb connection...
New coolpix model can't be remote controlled by USB only serial,
sorry. Anyway Palm device as camera are USB slave then a Palm can't
drive USB periphericals...

I haven't used this setup, but it should work o.k. You'll probably have to add a gender changer and a null modem adapter between the cable you've identified and the the SC-EW3, but this isn't hard to make or buy.

Good luck

Vladimir,

I'm interested in this coolcom s/w.
What is the minimum PalmOS version which is required to run
the coolcom.

For example, I have the original PalmPilot running System v3.0.
Is this good enough.

Hello

I where waiting for the cables to arrive to me I had to wait a long time but it WORKED!

Materials I used:

1.- Palm M515
2.- Coolpix 5700

3.- Serial hotsync cable for palm M515 you can get it here, the shipment was very fast from HK to South america (about 10 days)
http://shop.brando.com.hk/m500serialhotsync.php
4.- SC-EW3 I bough it at adorama
5.- Belkin Nullmodem Cable
6.- Gender changers db9-db9 M-M (2)

First I have not tested fully all the features, it connect and takes pictures and since I was missing a gender changer I had to rudimentary made one with 2 serial connectors.

I know all the cables and shippment should not be that cheap but since there are many programs that are being released to the coolpix 5700 I didn't wanted to be limited to what could I do with it.
Next step I'm going to try is using a RJ45-db9 adapters.

Thank you very much for this great program!

I think It's PalmOS 3.3, but haven't tried older version...

You could send me your PalmPilot v3.0 ROM dump and I'll try it with POSE (Palm OS Emulator) ! If it doesn't work I may fix it :-)

Using the same setup as yours with a Belkin Serial Sync cable (F3X1082-03), purchased from Office Max, I successfully got Coolcom to work with my 4500! Now I'll have a sweet Christmas :-)

Forgot to add that Cool Report was run on a Palm m130, controlling a Nikon Coolpix 4500. The Palm shutter operation is light years ahead of the Nikon MC-EU1 remote cable. My principle use is for telescope and microscope photography; the reason I got a 4500 in the first place....

I used the original Palm modem cable and the original Nikon SC-EW3 serial for CP990. Between them a 25 to 9 converter.

I'm not aware of anyone who sells ready to use cables, but you can do it all with standard cables and adapters, you don't have to modify cables. Get a serial hotsync cable for your clie, and a Nikon SC-EW3 cable. Go to any Radio shack and tell them you need a null modem adapter to put between the two cables, and any other adpaters you need to hook the cables and null modem adapter together. Radio Shack stocks everything you need. I think (but I'm not certain) that if you buy a modem cable or GPS cable for your Clie, you won't need the null modem adapter, but the serial hot sync cable is a lot cheaper.

I could make up a cable for you out of adapters if you can't find what you need yourself. I'm not in that business, and I don't have a 4500 (not sure if the serial cable is the same for the 4500 and my N710C or not) so I couldn't test it out, but if you have no other options, I'll be happy to help.
