Just bought a GF1 for $299.95 at Samy's.

No, they're running the ad today (Thursday 30th) on page 5 of the L.A. Times and it says NO TAX.

Just bought one too, the no tax does not apply to this camera, only the cameras in the ad that have no tax labeled underneath them - spoke with Penny at Samys 5 min ago. Still a good deal for a second m43 body

just ordered it through amazon.com, no tax to NY.

had the GF1 with the 20 mm kit lens delivered last night from adorama for $652.

saved $350, i am sure i can pick up a used 20 mm lens for 200 and change, if not, have many Nikon lenses i am eager to mount on the M43 via adapter and start exploring... very excited, i'd say buy a few and put them up on ebay.

It will continue until its replacement is imminent. The GF-2 is not its replacement. It is an additional, lower specification, model.

Panasonic GF1 Body $299.95 body only.
$179.00 extra for 14-45mm, if you buy both together.

Cheers
The $179 price is for the 14-42mm on their ad. By the way, did you pay tax in the LA store?
By the way: the 14-42mm is distinctly less desirable in corner sharpness, wide open, for many focal lengths than the 14-45mm. Just look at the two lenses, the latter has a fair amount more glass and i guess that is why it usually is $350 alone.

Having said that, and because i need an EVF and am willing to accept a bit of bulk for it, i jumped at the $399 price from Amazon for the G1 and the 14-45mm.

Semi-professional in early 1970s; just a putzer since then. interests: historical sites, virginia, motorcycle racing. A nikon user more by habit than choice; still, nikon seems to work well for me.

Why not add 150$ for G2?

It will hold its value better and has video + touchscreen (before you say that you dont like touchscreens, i cannot find easier way to select AF point then using touch)

Yah pays yer money . . .

But the short answer for me is: 1) all digital cameras depreciate very rapidly; i view them as essentially consumables over my usage life; 2) i, at least, could care less about video (i'm incompetent at it); 3) the G2, sadly, has the poorer lens -- and i DO care about corner sharpness -- and; 4) the G2's basic sensor for stills is only modestly improved over the G1.

Now i'm sure that the touchscreen and video are nice, but i don't value them highly; you may. I'd still rather have the better lens though.

I suppose if money is no object, sure . . . but i guess then i'd get a GH2 . . .

In two years or so, i expect Panasonic will be implementing D7000-style/performance sensors in their m4/3s. Now, THERE is an upgrade that i'd go for, and i'd pay more than $150 for the privilege.

Then maybe you can find reference to the GF1 on the following site? I can't.

http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/index.html

Personally I would start here, but there's nothing:

http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/line_up/systemcamera.html

(Funny that even the L1 and L10 are still there, but not the G1, GH1 or GF1.

Also, the GF2 isn't lower spec.
