Split the board

Now there's an idea! Apparently "whiners" are those who weren't born knowing how to use every feature of their camera or are so silly as to not think their Sony camera (whichever one that may be) is not the most perfect camera ever made and could not possibly have any improvements nor would they like to discuss ways they might work around any "features" they think are not there. What a boring forum it would be without real discussions of making the best use of our cameras.

I believe most of us who have an A900 have anther smaller/lighter DSLR ( or SLT ) as a back-up, travell or take-everywhere body. I'd rather having to visit one Forum for my reading and posting the go through two or several. Also IMHO knowledge and doubts are to be shared independently of of a sensor size!

My opinion is that the split should be based on full frame versus APS-C. Any problems with this? Don't think so.
  • Of course, the forum should be about how to best use our Sony cameras and there is much about general photography that we have in common regardless of FF or APS-C. But many, perhaps most, of the discussion topics for either FF or APS-C have to do with lenses and issues of lens selection, employment, and techniques with lenses which differ significantly between the different frame sizes.
  • I believe there's quite a few FF users already here, and many more who would come back to DPR if the board was more focused on their cameras and how to best use them.
  • If, as some speculate, there would be relatively little traffic on a FF dedicated forum, well . . . so what? I could be wrong, but I would be surprised to learn that such a split would cost anybody any money or effort. Isn't it rather like creating a new directory on my hard drive in order to better organize my home files? I don't need to purchase a new hard drive to do that. Don't need to add bandwidth, etc.
  • People interested in Sony 850/900 information could find it handy in one place. When I was shopping for my 850 about 13 months ago, I started reading the Sony DSLR forum in earnest. I wasn't upgrading from another Sony DSLR. Because of that, I can't even describe how confusing it was to wade into all this brand specific jargon, most of which was irrelevant to my interests. (Oh, yes, I was trying to sort out the Canon and Nikon offerings at the same time!) Nevertheless, it took a long time because I had to figure out the differences between so many other Sony DSLR models; most all of that knowledge is still of very little value to me.
  • Some people apparently think there is some full frame snobbery that drives thoughts on how to split a forum. (Hey, once I even OP'd a joking discussion about that and the difficulties of finding FF info in such an APS-C oriented forum since the SLTs came out. That really riled up a couple folks. That wasn't my intention, but it goes to show you that there's a lot of people who are extremely sensitive and looking for opportunities to react to real or imagined insults. Yeah, typical internet nonsense.) Anyhow, I, and probably most all full frame users cannot help be very impressed with the leaps Sony has made in the SLT and the new A580. That looks like a very interesting camera that I will seriously consider adding to my bag. I'd love to go to the Sony APS-C DSLR forum when I want to read all about it; or ask for help or advice in my decision making.
Bottom line: the impact of lens performance/selection criteria makes the most important dividing line between the Sony DSLRs and owners' interests in learning how to best use them. That means FF AND APS-C forums.

Few years ago there was only one Sony forum. I really loved it. Lots of helpful people, reviews, photographic critique, no matter if you had a crappy entry level cybershot or the flagship, then the F828.

There was some trolling of course. But I can say helpers/trolling ratio was pretty high, more than many other forums.

But something changed when the alphas were introduced... and everything changed like in the Canon/Nikon forums... lots of "smart" guys... lots of trolling, much less photography and much more bitching... maybe the measurebator count went way up.

So go ahead, split it as many times as you like, it will never be the same...

It is still a helpful forum with lots of good advice, encouragement and photos posted. It is a lot different from this forum.

SLT are fine with the DSLR. The more SLT owner on this board the better.

When your current system does not satisfy you, it is better to switch than to cry and whine on the forums.

You may be right and it would be fine by me as I own one of each. It would eliminate the senseless fighting between the OVF and the EVF crowd and it would give me two boards to post in. :-) I don't think there are enough Sony FF users to support their own board.

No rules there about which Sony you got.
