Hello everybody,

I was wondering if someone can give me a straigh an honest opinion of the Canon 28-135 mm IS lens. It looks like a great lens on paper! and I have seen some nice shots taken with it, But I have also seen some negative posts about it. I currently have the Sigma 24-70 EX lens and think it is a good lens, but I was looking for a better walk around lens. The canon looked like a good alternative to the sigma with more reach.

Should I traid in my Sigma 24-70 EX for the Canon 28-135???
Again it will be a walk around lens for people and landscape.

Thanks in advance
Paul...

The Canon 24-70mm is my walk around lens.

The point, you have to decide what lens suits your purposes and go for it. Are there limitations to the 28-135mm, quality wise? Yes!

Oh, Well! :-)

See if you can borrow an equivalent lens and try it on for a couple of days.

Remember there's no perfect lens, there's never enough time and there's no camera bag big enough:-)

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone could let me know how the quality, and sharpness of the 28-135 would compare to the 24-70 EX sigma.

Thanks
Paul.

Hi,

I got Sigma 24-70 EX F 2.8 on friday last week. It is very sharp lens.
I have EF 28-135 mm IS, I think Sigma 24-70 is much better, maby
my next walk around lens.

Hi Kari,

thanks for your input. well maybe I will stick with the 24-70mm Sigma after all! It seems like the 28-135 is not a great lens to have, and needs more PS after the initial shot to get it to an acceptable level.

Thaks for your help.

Paul, I use 2 lens for 'walkaround'. An easy way to do this is to buy a Lowepro (#2 I think) lens case for a Canon 70-200 f/4 and sling this over your shoulder. I also have the Sigma 24-70 and keep it on most of the time, but I generally carry the 70-200 also. However, if you are 'trading' the 24-70 for the 28-135, that's another matter--it means you aren't in a position at this moment to 'add' a lens.

Hey Diane,

I have decided to hang onto the 24-70 EX Sigma! I do like this lens, and think it is sharp! I was looking to get a little more reach from a lens, and that is why I was going with the 28 - 135 canon. I will look into the lowpro #2 bag, to carry around my 24-70 and 100-300 EX lens. These 2 lenses come in handy when you are at the Zoo or just walking around the park.

Thanks again
Paul..

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone could let me know how
the quality, and sharpness of the 28-135 would compare to the 24-70
EX sigma.
I was responding to your comment about replacing the Sigma 24-70mm as a walk around lens. The reason I addressed that issue is, if the 24-70 suits your needs then the 28-135 won't.

The quality of the Sigma 24-70mm is almost up to that of the Canon 28-70mm f/2.8L. The quality of the Canon 28-135mm, isn't.

Back to the walking around point, if the 28-135mm won't serve your purposes, then why entertain an idea about replacing your existing lens. So the question that needs to be answered first is, will the 28-135mm suit your shooting style? If not, then stick with the better quality lens, the Sigma 24-70mm.

Hope this helps.

they were the 20-35L, 28-70L and the 28-135 IS. The shots were of a friends family and all shots were taken from a tripod in the same location with the amount of people from 2 to 10. It was very cloudy and I used the 550ex on all shots. (also shot on a tripod) There is very little difference in the shots as far as color and contrast. None were under or overexposed. They all looked pretty much similar in this lighting and situation.

I like my 28-70L but I don't have any problems with the 28-135 either. I don't have any underexposure problems with it more than any other lens I have and mines really sharp.

No way! ..

I tried a couple of 24-70EXs and OK, they aren't as sharp as the 28-70EX wide open but by the time they reached the widest aperture of the 28-135IS they were delivering better pics and no underexposure too.

The AF on the 28-135IS seems slow despite Ring USM (though doesn't make the noisy Sigma racket) , the IS doesn't seem as effective as other IS lenses even at the same focal length particularily the 75-300IS (comparing 75-135) which is far more effective, I found that it hunts bad at 28mm too in low light..

It's well made, light and compact but I wouldn't swap my 28-70EX DF for one, f2.8 is really handy, in fact there are only TWO lenses I'd change my Sigma for - the Canon 24-70L or 28-70L and that's only because they have better contrast, focus faster and dont go soft between 60 and 70mm at f2.8 - you PAY for that though, big time and there are disadvantages there too, manual focussing on the Sigma is a dream in comparison to the 28-70L ..

Just my view after using a good copy of the 28-135IS, two good Sigma 28-70EXDFs, two good Sigma 24-70EXs and a 28-70L
