PowerShot Announcements

That others do the same thing does not make it right. It is clear that canonrumors is the original source of this information. Why else would it contain the text 'CR1'?

Do you think SX30 would have 30x lens?

That might happen; but I'm more worried about their use of CMOS to get better video performance and ending up with worse stills. Check the furor over on the Panasonic forum about the FZ100. They got HD video, an MOS sensor, higher frame rates, wider zoom range, a flip out LCD, and a hot shoe; but got soft images and a slower lens in the process.

Personally I think the FZ100 samples are horrible, but a lot of people on the Panasonic forum (and not only) think that if you dare to point that out you are a pixel peeper, and your opinion is invalid.

From what I can gather he
Purchased : Canon S90
did not purchase: Panasonic LX3
Wants to Purchase: Panasonic Lx5
I did that. I researched cameras, and was very excited about the Fuji EXR stuff. I bought one, and was disappointed. Mostly I didn't lilke the user interface. I ended up replacing it with a Canon S90, which I love. But everyone has different tastes in user interface, and I'm certainly not going to criticise someone who bought a camera that didn't work out for them.

Fair enough, but I'll wager you don't spend most of your time in the Fuji forum extolling the virtues of your Canon.

Agree, but from what others have been saying, the CMOS sensor may actually make IQ worse on still shots???
I finally may be tempted to upgrade my Canon G7. Hope they keep it at 10mp. Like the HD video (if true).
G12
  • The G12 will come with a CMOS sensor.
  • Yes, HD video.

Look - here's a picture from the Canon sd4000 (backlit CMOS sensor) @ iso125 (base iso) -

Here's a picture from a powershot 880 (regular old CCD sensor) @ iso80 -

Here's the same comparison at iso1600

sd4000 @ iso1600

sd880 @ iso1600

They both use a 1/2.3" sensor. If anything, I would say that the sd4000 (backlit cmos) is sharper at base iso than the 880 (traditional ccd), though that's probably due to the lens (note how there's white smudging at the bottom of the "club" on the 880's pic, but no smudging on the sd4000's pic). In the second set of pics, I'm not sure if the sd4000's pic is more smudged, but it's definitely less noisy. Could just be a noise vs detail tradeoff, and one that in that particular example I'd be willing to make.

Sounds like the Nikon P7000 should be announced tomorrow too which sounds like it will be on par with the G12...should be interesting ;)

I for one am very, very interested in seeing the Nikon P7000.

I like the controls on the recent G-series cams. But will have a look at the Nikon.

Those kinds of scenes don't show the sensor performance, just how smart the NR algorithm is. Resolution carts are BS, because the NR algorithm doesn't have a problem telling black from white.

I would like to see a test of fur, hair, foliage or grass. That's where the NR totally fails.

No, of course not. I wrote in one thread about my experience, and got some useful advice about how to take better photos with the Fuji. If I hadn't gotten the S90, I would be trying to follow that, as the Fuji is capable of taking better photos in most situations than any of my other cameras, even if I hadn't been terribly successful at getting it to do so reliably. I also posted comparison shots between the Fuji and a Canon ixus in another thread, and pointed out both the advantages (EXR really works) and disadvantages (blue overcast to a lot of photos) of the Fuji as compared to the Canon. I think a lot of the Fuji fans liked to see proof that even a Canon fan could see the virtues of EXR. :) And I didn't bother to post the photos I'd botched by having trouble with the interface, as anyone can botch photos on pretty much any camera, and who needs to see examples of bad photos.

I don't get the people who continually harp about, for instance, not liking the ergonomics of the S90. Okay, so it's not a good camera for you, but it is for other people. There are lots of cameras on the market, go find one you do like.

Agree. Sounds like the G-series finally has a direct competitor.

I hope the sx30 will only add threaded lens barrel for filters, etc., a cord for the lens cap, & have RAW capability. Canon should spend the rest of the $ on improving the IQ. What will probably actually happen is they will increase mp & zoom range & probably go to backlit mos sensor to improve video. That's ok if they can improve IQ, but otherwise see the panasonic forum concerning the fz-100.
