MC-EU1 remote protocol, PalmOS remote for Coolpix

From posts on this topic I understand I need the Nikon SC-EW3 cable for the camera (CP-5000) end.

I have not been able to locate a Visor to Serial modem cable but I do have a mobile usb hot sync cable. Can I replace the USB connector end with an appropriate gender db-9 serial connector to make this work? (Did find a serial cable online for $40 but the usb cable was only $7 so I am hoping it can be modified).

Using a continuity tester it appears there are only 3 connections between the Visor and the USB connector (though the USB has 4 connectors plus ground). Can anyone tell me the pinouts from the Visor to the serial connector?

If the USB hotsync cable cannot be modified then I would modify a serail hot sync cradel by replacing the serial connector with the right gender and rewiring new connector appropriately. Can someone tell me the pinouts for such modification?

Does anyone have a source for a Visor to serial modem cable for less than $25?

Thanks!

Since, it is hard to purchase the SC-EW3 cable, so I want to modify the UC-E1 cable to be SC-EW3. Is it anyone know the pin assignment for SC-EW3 or anyone have been try it before?

the Handspring RS232 cable has some electronic in the cable (TTL to RS232 converters) and it requires an externel power supply to work (When used with a PC, it gets power from DTR and RTS).

After much fiddling I've succeeded in modifying my UC-E1 cable and an extra cradle to successfully control my 4500 with this program. I took some pictures throughout the modifications and will post the details to my website shortly for anyone who would be interested in my method.

Used version 0.26 and everything appears to be working great! Great work on this program Vladimir!

I'm using the hotsync cable which is used for connect the Plam III to PC for hot sync. But I got the error message 'init: not NAK'. Do I need to swap the Tx and Rx pin assignment ?

my palm III was updated to V3.5 OS. Is it the cause of issue?
Hi,

Here is a link to some informatiions I found about the MC-EU1
serial protocol :

http://vyskocil.free.fr/coolcom/

You can find there, applications for PalmOS in very alpha stage but
useable to remote control the Coolpix family of camera !
A very handy application - but I can't get it to work!

I've got a Coolpix 995 and a Palm IIIx and the Nikon SC-EW3 cable,
also a cable for the Palm end terminating in a DB25 male connector
(I've used this for connecting to a modem - so it's not a 'Null
Modem' one). I've made a dongle to connect the two cables with the
TX and RX lines crossed - pin1 to pin 2 on between connectors. I've
also tied the RTS to the CTS lines together on each connector (but
I suspect the HW handshaking is not used anyway). I've also
connected the earth pin 7 on both connectors.
I get and error: 'init: not NAK' when I try to connect.

Ideas anyone, please?

I modified a Palm Vx hotsync cradle and swaped the Tx and Rx cables. I didn't use a serial cable to the camera (I modified the included USB cable), but used the instructions at the site discussed above to ensure these cables were swapped. Works great now -- very much worth the effort.

Oranj,

I modified the USB cable UC-E1 to be a Serial and USB cable as the site http://delphys.net/d.holmes/photos/coolpix_e990/e990_usb_cable.html

Would you mind to share your experience on the swap cable? I try to swap the cable on DB-9 pin 2 and pin 3. But the result is still negative.

I would be more than willing to talk to you about my procedure. I'm planning on posting a web page later with my method, but if you send me an email through my profile we can discuss it now.

Thanks to all. Due to the Palm III hotsync cable is not a null modem cable. So I need to cross the pin 2 and pin3 cable on DB-9 at http://delphys.net/d.holmes/photos/coolpix_e990/e990_usb_cable.html

Now is working fine.

Thanks to all again.

device connector 9-DB-F
pin no.
3 --> DTR 6 DSR (don't need this for a pure HotSync cable!)
4
5 --> RTS 8 CTS
6 --> TxD 2 RxD
7

I must confess that all this tech talk confuses me. I have a coolpix 5700 and a NEW Clie PEG-NX70V with palm OS 5 . In layman's terms..what do I need to use my clie with my 5700. Also, besides the hardware I will need, what software and instructions on how to put all this together so I can use my clie to remotely control my 5700.

Thank you
Eddie
