I use the p and Ps mode alot. Any one else use it and why, or why not?

No program, auto or special modes. Just aperture and shutter priority, and all I use them for is a quicker way to achieve what I'd do in manual anyway.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I don't think they wanted me to say anything. It was just their way of having a bit of fun, the swines. Strange thing is they make such bloody good cameras.

If you are happy with your pictures, then keep shooting as you do.

When you want more creative shots and/or exposure control, then Aperture or Shutter Priority mode will be better to give you more control and will allow you to be more creative.

If you want to learn more about the other modes, checkout the "photo workshop" series of books by Wiley Press. Look at the Exposure book in the series where the author explains how while the P modes are fine, here is why you want to learn the other modes.

I will probably get flamed for this, but I will use the Scene Modes or the P mode in a pinch or when its a well front lit subject where DOF does not matter nor does motion blur while otherwise my camera will stay in Aperture mode.

In the end, if you are happy with the pictures then keep going but you are not using your camera to its fullest. I believe the PEN cameras are better for P mode shooting.

In P/Ps Mode you DO have control of exposures you get 3-5 equivalent exposures.

I use them all, but mostly use A. Still, when in a hurry, all modes can be very useful.

The time when switching to "Landscape" simply meant "Camera tries to close aperture for more DOF is gone long ago. Currently, it means the above + "Blue and Green will be boosted a bit", etc, etc. Too bad it doesn't automatically focus to infinity.

The P mode is actually pretty smart, there's a curve explaining how it makes choices in the manual, but I never had the time to look into it.

What most surprised me when I gave a try to the AUTO mode the other day was that it actually worked pretty well.

I use Aperture Priority mode 95% of the time and Manual mode the other 5%. The only time it goes into Program mode, or Auto is when I'm handing the camera to someone else to take a picture (very, very rarely). ;)

Aperture, Manual, Program, and Shutter Mode in that order. I did start learning in manual because that was the only way to control my camera back when.

Alan

520-p OR pS MODE, gives you ALL the equivalent exposures. You can choose either the SS OR aperture you want, no need to switch to a or s mode, Ps make both of those UN necessary. Try it.

S 40% because birds are my number one priority
A 30% where I don't need the speed
M 20% where I don't want the camera to think too hard

P 10% when I'm taking subjects that aren't my normal fodder, landscapes, cities, people etc

I don't tend to like the suggestions it makes (in either P or Ps), but that's just me.

90% M mode (establish exposure, concentrate on composition and focus)

10% A mode (combined with ESP results in a fast M-mode that always provides the fastest shutter for a given scene)

BTW - what are these "scene" modes you speak of :) P/S/A/M FTW.

When I use a Flash I am in "S" mode to get the shutter speed consistant.

No flash= "A" mode to get the "look" I want.

I use exposure compensation in any mode if I need it.

Never, except for the first day to try out. Don't remember what I thought of the results. I was afraid I'd get lazy and dependent on the more automatic modes (auto or program or scene) to take pictures and I didn't want that, so never used them again. I shoot aperture priority most of the time, except for specific moving car and street shots (shutter priority) and night scenes, birds, fireworks etc. which I often shoot in full manual mode.

With P/Ps Mode you get ALL the Correct exposure combinations, just choose the SS or aperture compo you want. This makes the A and S modes UN-necessary.
Of course you want a certain SS or Aperture, then use the a or s modes.

I was going to respond to the below. Then I decided not to, as your response is pure nonsense. I don't like (nor do I actually dislike them, I'm more indifferent) P/Ps modes, but really....

You state "choose P/Ps modes, you get +-5 EV with a turn of a dial"

...but now you tell me, "If you want a specific shutter or aperture, then you should use S/A mode".

????

So if I know what I want, why do I need P mode again?

I find any P mode useful only if I need one hand free while shooting. I'm one of those guys who (usually) handles his camera with both hands while shooting.

I use almost always Aperture Priority. If I need a short shutter speed I will simply open the aperture. Using Aperture or Shutter Priority is just as fast as using P with Program Shift.

I used P and Ps modes - particularly with my first Oly DSLR - and found them great for general shooting. However, they do limit the range of aperture and shutter speed combinations you can select. For example, you may find you can't stop the lens all the way down to max your DOF in P mode. So nowadays I tend to shoot in A.

I use it from time to time, don't let anyone tell you its useless. A lot of times I'll walk around at dusk with my E-30 and Sigma 30mm lens and set the camera to P mode & ISO 400, leaving me to worry only about composing and shooting.

However, I do not use Ps, if I have to do that, I'd rather switch to A mode.

Almost all the time in Aperture priority mode, sometimes going to full manual (generally when using a MF lens and wanting the old-school experience :-) or when using flash in tricky situations)

Cheers
