Canon EOS 550D. What a lovely surprise!

I think what is next for Nikon would be their d100 (whatever replaces d90) because that is next in line. Also, I could see it coming out for maybe $1,000 body only. Not bad. I am not a big "I need a top LCD pro looking" kind of guy, but many people love that and that would give it a huge edge until the 60D comes around or something. I love the rebel style bodies. I prefer my Xsi over my backup 50D.. :)

But I hate that the made the metering button vanish since the 500D and I see it is not returning. That button was important to me. My Xsi is going nowhere anytime soon. :-P
This sure looks like a very nice camera for the price, and it will put a real squeeze on Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and Sony. In terms of competitive feature sets at the $800 price point.

It seems each round of upgrades has manufacturers racheting up the features set.

Five years ago a camera like the 550D would have been impossible at any price. This camera looks like a budget 7D with a pentaprism and a slower frame rate. I bet they sell a lot of these.

Kudos to Canon.

This camera just took the spotlight off the Pentax K-x.

As an Olympus 4/3 user I think Olympus really needs to get HD video into their next 4/3 camera. Although I have no need or desire for it, it is rapidly becoming a standard feature in all new DSLRs. If they don't, then it will be clear that Micro 4/3 is their new platform. And it actually might make business sense to retreat to a market unique niche.

What will be interesting is how Nikon responds. The D5000 doesn't come close to this feature set, and the D90 costs quite a bit more. Will there be a D7000?

And Sony has nothing to compare.

Competition in the DSLR market benefits all of us enthusiasts.
And Canon has just upped the ante.

Quickly shooter, draw your lens or prepared to get shot.

Do you also say that about Av and Tv?

This isn't film any more, it's about time ISO was treated just like f-stop or shutter speed.

on Canon's, is this the same as 7d or has it ben improved, ie could you use contrast detect af on the 7d?

What's better, Pentaprism or Pentamirror?

Also, does this have exactly the same sensor as the 7D?

I should have said the 550D has a pentamirror which is clearly inferior to the pentaprism on the 7D.

Thanks for catching that.

That's fine, not pointing out the typo, just confused me a little :-)

The sample images look good.

I was holding off buying a Pentax Kx when this announcement happened, hmmmm, got me thinking.

I share your dismay over the metering mode button. The lack of that kept me from buying the T1i at the time I bought the XSi. I'd love to see a reprogram for the video button into a metering mode, since I never use video. (Yes, I know there isn't any on the XSi, but I never used it on my D90)

The sample images at ISO 1600+ look quite good. I suspect they would beat my 400D when viewed at the same image size (not 100%). No articulating LCD though, so probably won't convince me to upgrade yet.
I'm with you on the need for articulating LCD. Not sure what the deal is, as Canon seemed to pioneer this feature in super zooms and other point & shoots. No way I'll jump from 500D to 550D given what it offers. When/if they add in an articulating LCD I think I will be placing a pre-order.

Nobody talked much about the samples so far... It might just be the result of a placebo effect (new gear is always exciting !) but I'm pretty wowed by the results at high ISO.. Coming from an XSi, which I love, it looks like ISO 6400 here beats ISO 1600 on the XSi... again I'm probably off but.. it sure looks interesting...

The good news is that my 5 year old can have my 350D , my 11 year old can have my 450D and my wife can have the 500D while I use the new one. Thats my angle and Im sticking to it.
Hey Bro' , you better get busy and have more kids ! that's my strategy too but I'll finally give up my original 300d to my twelve year old who is old enough to know how to use it !

And I have to say that the 550d is Canons most awesome release since the 300d , imho ! Maybe even more so ! The video/film world is on their knees today ! And that's why Canon scheduled the Feb. 8th British Film thing . WOW ! Unbelievable ! Now all they need to do is release an Auto/video lens ala the Pany 14-140 with power zoom !

I'm also a 400d user, and that was my first thought too. It looks impressive.

The ISO 6400 sample images look great. I do a lot of low-light shots with my 400D, and my biggest complaint is banding noise, which I didn't see in the 550D samples. It's not enough information to draw any conclusions yet, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

External mic input is an unexpected bonus too.

It does annoy me somewhat that I've only had my 500D for 6 months, and it's being 'replaced' (yes I know that Canon aren't actually replacing the 500D with the 550D, but let me explain). The only reason I'm slightly annoyed is that I've been doing a College project for Media (I also do Photography), so I've been using the 500D's video, which, as we know, is crippled at Full HD. Now a camera for similar money is being released with proper manual control during filming, which would have been helpful.

Yes, I know my point is invalid since I could have just used a video camera, but I thought I'd vent somewhere.

Anyway, I'm liking the look of it. I doubt I'll buy it, since I need to get my moneys worth out of my 500D yet, but if I was in the market for a new camera, I'd probably pick it up.

I don't call a $899 price for camera only (on Amazon) "similar money." I bought the 500D with 18-55 and 55-250 lenses for $799.

I eventually expect to see the price go lower, but it's certainly not "similar" today.

A better AF would be a "huge" surprise. A 7D-ish AF would be a storm. Maybe this is for the 60D!

It's really a big step up for Canon isn't? Great lcd, manual video control, exterbal mic, fantastic metering, max auto iso...Do I really need anything else? Nope! It's canon for me from now on! Bye bye KM/Sony, halloooo Canon!
Pardon my ignorance, but what is "wrong" with the 500D AF? I'm currently using a 350D, so it certainly has to be better than what I've got now, but the improved AF (and FPS) is my main motivation for upgrading.

but if your not into video I don't see much improvement here. yes 18mp and better metering system but nothing on AF or other feature that would affect still photo's.
The max auto ISO is good idea I guess .
wouldn't the gapless microlenses result in better stills? Or is that how they were able to squeeze another 3 MB out of the sensor?

Well,

I think I'm sold....

Had my XSi (despite what my name says) for about 2 years now, and gotten alot of use out of it...Time for a T2i(550d, Kiss X4)....

One thing that really chaps my a$$ about this camera is the new battery and grip...I know why Canon did it but a Rebel series grip should be just that...a Rebel series grip.

Then again its been the same for a long time. I am only whining because I'll have to buy the new grip along with the body, as the handling of the Rebels without, in my opinion is awful!
