I think what is next for Nikon would be their d100 (whatever replaces d90) because that is next in line. Also, I could see it coming out for maybe $1,000 body only. Not bad. I am not a big "I need a top LCD pro looking" kind of guy, but many people love that and that would give it a huge edge until the 60D comes around or something. I love the rebel style bodies. I prefer my Xsi over my backup 50D..
But I hate that the made the metering button vanish since the 500D and I see it is not returning. That button was important to me. My Xsi is going nowhere anytime soon.
Quickly shooter, draw your lens or prepared to get shot.

--This sure looks like a very nice camera for the price, and it will put a real squeeze on Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and Sony. In terms of competitive feature sets at the $800 price point.
It seems each round of upgrades has manufacturers racheting up the features set.
Five years ago a camera like the 550D would have been impossible at any price. This camera looks like a budget 7D with a pentaprism and a slower frame rate. I bet they sell a lot of these.
Kudos to Canon.
This camera just took the spotlight off the Pentax K-x.
As an Olympus 4/3 user I think Olympus really needs to get HD video into their next 4/3 camera. Although I have no need or desire for it, it is rapidly becoming a standard feature in all new DSLRs. If they don't, then it will be clear that Micro 4/3 is their new platform. And it actually might make business sense to retreat to a market unique niche.
What will be interesting is how Nikon responds. The D5000 doesn't come close to this feature set, and the D90 costs quite a bit more. Will there be a D7000?
And Sony has nothing to compare.
Competition in the DSLR market benefits all of us enthusiasts.
And Canon has just upped the ante.
