It's really a big step up for Canon isn't? Great lcd, manual video control, exterbal mic, fantastic metering, max auto iso...Do I really need anything else? Nope! It's canon for me from now on! Bye bye KM/Sony, halloooo Canon!

A better AF would be a "huge" surprise. A 7D-ish AF would be a storm. Maybe this is for the 60D!

The 550D spec looks great! To be honest, the 7D AF system is not as good as it was being advertised. I expect the 550D AF should be fine because of its simplicity.

even for a 500D owner - I just got mine in December and now the T2i is out.

I just check to see availability and pricing

not bad - 799 for all the new movie features and gapless microlenses with 18Mpix.

its too bad it uses a new battery and a new battery grip

I have 6 batteries and agrip since the 450 and 500d share the same accessories

hmmm I doubt my wife will understand that I need the 550D because it has full movie control at 24fps in 1080P.

Yupp I'm a camera junkie and I know this will be in my bag by April.

The good news is that my 5 year old can have my 350D , my 11 year old can have my 450D and my wife can have the 500D while I use the new one. Thats my angle and Im sticking to it.

Now what to do with my 20lb 1DMk2 Dinasour.

"Pricing and Availability

The Canon EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. dealers in early March, and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $799.99. It will also be offered in a kit version with Canon's EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens at an estimated retail price of $899.99. "

but if your not into video I don't see much improvement here. yes 18mp and better metering system but nothing on AF or other feature that would affect still photo's.
The max auto ISO is good idea I guess .

Many people keep hoping for this in new Canon models but I feel that will never happen in models below the 7D for years to come. If that was the case, it would kill the 7D.

Quickly shooter, draw your lens or prepared to get shot.

It got the features I missed on my 2months old 500D, dammit.
  • Configurable auto ISO
  • Blinking highlights in view-mode
  • and the movie stuff (manual exposure and stero mic connector)
How is the sensor noise/sensitivity as compared to the 500D? I'm doing a lot of low light high ISO snapping...

You do not use your 1D mk2? Wow, I would still put it to use if I was you. Or use it as your backup at least. Or you can sell it and pretty sure you can get about $1,000 for it on CL.

I never use Auto ISO, although I'm sure I could learn to do so. I'm not into video (mostly because I can't handhold as steadily as video requires), I've learned to live with the current metering system.

I do like the new LCD and features and the new + - 5 for EC, although I would probably rarely use it.

This sure looks like a very nice camera for the price, and it will put a real squeeze on Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and Sony. In terms of competitive feature sets at the $800 price point.

It seems each round of upgrades has manufacturers racheting up the features set.

Five years ago a camera like the 550D would have been impossible at any price. This camera looks like a budget 7D with a pentaprism and a slower frame rate. I bet they sell a lot of these.

Kudos to Canon.

This camera just took the spotlight off the Pentax K-x.

As an Olympus 4/3 user I think Olympus really needs to get HD video into their next 4/3 camera. Although I have no need or desire for it, it is rapidly becoming a standard feature in all new DSLRs. If they don't, then it will be clear that Micro 4/3 is their new platform. And it actually might make business sense to retreat to a market unique niche.

What will be interesting is how Nikon responds. The D5000 doesn't come close to this feature set, and the D90 costs quite a bit more. Will there be a D7000?

And Sony has nothing to compare.

Competition in the DSLR market benefits all of us enthusiasts.
And Canon has just upped the ante.

Olympus E-30
Zuiko 9-18mm
Zuiko 14-54mm II
Zuiko 40-150mm I
Zuiko 70-300mm
Zuiko 50mm f/2.0 macro

I think they will keep the XXD line. Reason being is for 2 reasons.

1) They need a camera to compete with Nikon's d90 level cameras that have top LCD and other semi pro features but for a more budget price than say the 7D.

2) They need a reason to make a new camera to counter competition more readily. If you have more camera categories, the more new models you can put out a year. Ex. would not make sense to replace the 550D 3 or 4 months after it comes out, but it is not a problem to make a new XXD line after the 550D comes out because its a different level camera and can capitalize off Nikons response to the 550D.

3) Pound for pound value as far as performance to price goes, I believe the XXD line is Canon's best point. You get a great all around camera with better than normal focasing, fps, pro body all in a resonable price. Those who can't afford more expensive but want an upgrade path will come here.
Okay same sensor as 7D
I suspect canon will remove the 50D series altogether.
think about it. in 1400-1500$ Street price sits the 7D body
Then at around 900$ will be this 550D body.
Next would be 8D in expensive land, and 650D in normal land.

Moreover, its a baby 7D with same sensor, and similar features!

It is just marketting... I wonder though will anybody ever who uses a camera flick that menu switch that says Medium resolution? :)
18MP seems a little excessive though. Probably the kitlens can't even resolve that many pixels, nor will the average buyer of this camera ever use those pixels to their fullest extent. Pure marketing decision.

No - you can't compare MSRP to street prices.

There is plenty of room for a $1400 60D.

The sample images at ISO 1600+ look quite good. I suspect they would beat my 400D when viewed at the same image size (not 100%). No articulating LCD though, so probably won't convince me to upgrade yet.
