1. The iPad (that's right, our beloved iPad, newest member of our Apple Family), says Apple (the greatest of all electronic companies, in it's category): "The iPad, is a New Category of Device, Between the laptop computer and iPhone" ("smart phones" or what ever else you prefer to call these things); and, "the iPad, is better at what it does/can do, than a notebook/laptop computer or smart phone", including the iPhone.

2. It's clear from all the apparent confusion over it, that iPad, isn't for everyone; and, neither is it intended to be. But, lets at least know what it is, is not, and is not intended to be; at least with this first generation iPad. :|

This will by far be the most misunderstood device from apple since MacBook Air!

Like you say, it's not for everyone.

But it's thin, shiny and has an Apple logo on it. That's enough right?
How exactly is this going to replace netbooks? Its twice the price with half of the use.

Think about it, as Apple, has already covered this with us. :|

Who says Apple wants to be in the business of producing devices that (a) have horrible ergonomics, and that (b) produce little to no profit for their vendors?

If you think this was about giving a $1500 MacBook Pro to you for $300 so that Apple could burn through their cash reserves and go out of business, think again. This is about creating or finding another product category in which design (a key Apple strength) is important enough that many people will willingly pay that little bit extra to get a product that handles its intended job WELL.

The iPad may not be in a category that is important to you. It might not even be in one that is that important to me. But Apple doesn't need for everyone in the entire world to buy one to make the product, and the category, a success.

I am sure most people would agree with you but they are not selling it like you say. Just listen to the introduction to the product and to what they write "magical, revolutionary technology etc etc etc" that is not the same thing that your saying.

they have created a lot of expectation above and beyond what they wanted to delivered at this time, whose fault is it? They will most likely add GPS, camera, more flash memory etc ( and full OS hopefully) later on its life cycle and this time i will wait for that.

I can see GPS being a cool addition and they will always add more flash. I can't see the point of carrying round a 10" device with a 3MP camera attached to it, even if its only a webcam, holding this thing up at a decnt angle to view and use it for something like ichat would be a real pain, and as for Full OSX, this is a super charged ipod touch (ipod touch pro) it was never and will never be designed for full OSX. That would be a totally different device.

It's going to replace my netbook for sure! It starts instantly, meaning I have read my email before my netbook has even booted. It's screen is much larger than my netbook screen, meaning I can look at websites without having to scroll all the time. It's much faster than my netbook, meaning I will enjoy the experience much more. I have a Compaq Mini and I have to agree with Steve Jobs that a netbook doesn't excel at anything. The only advantage over my Macbook Pro is that it weighs so much less, but it's no joy to use. And that's not even because it runs Windows! It's slooooooowwwwww. The iPad does at exactly the thing I will use it for: to be connected.

I am not sure if Jobs ever called this device a tablet as in tablet pc or not. I know it is referred to as a pad which is appropriate. It is way different from a tablet PC or computer in that it lacks some things you would expect from a laptop PC. It has no CD or DVD drive. It has no usb port to load programs or pictures off of. It does not and will not ( at least in this version ) run 3rd party applications such as Adobe PS. It has no built in camera like about every laptop does these days. Therefore I believe it is fair to say it is not a tablet PC or a tablet Mac. The Mac laptop would be the Mac Boos and Air.

What this device does do that interests me is it runs almost all of the previous apps found in the apps store. My computers will not use any of those. The new ipad has hands down the best touch screen I have ever seen including that of my ipod touch. Not only is the ipad a lot larger than my ipod touch , it also has a much nicer built in speaker than my ipod touch. I see it as a terrific device for playing the kind of games I like such as virtual pool, scrabble, Space Invaders and some card games. I have fat fingers and that has hindered me on the ipod touch. I love the idea of having more screen real estate. I have always lugged my 17 inch HP laptop out to the coffee shops where I meet friends and of ten just have coffee. I spend all of that time browsing the web and using skype. OUCH ! No camera built in , that was a screw up on Apples part. I mean what part of Multi Media does not involve a camera ? Then again I dont really use Skype with video anyway.

In the end I look at the ipad as a ipod touch on steroids for people like me who want easier use of the keyboard and other graphical controls. If the battery lasts even half the time they claim I will feel confident leaving the power at home. This is definately a Apple Macintosh device made for use with apps made for Macs. I like it enough to sell my 64 gig ipod touch and buy the ipad.

Thanks to you all for what you share so freely, It's my hope to be able to help

well.

How about the fault of the media, bloggers, bboard posters who created it? Apple just announced that they were going to have a product introduction event -- they did not preannounce the general type of product, much less say that it would have all of the attributes that any rumor site in the world could dream up for it.

I'm just really curious. When you're off to the coffee shop to meet friends, presumably to actually talk to them face-to-face, why would you drag your computer along with you? When I go out to meet friends and get there early, I usually people-watch, or plan some future activity (work or personal), or just free-associate. Am I just really old-school?

Why do you think it doesn't have GPS capabilities? The WiFi only modal may not, but I think it can triangulate like the first iPhone could. And the WiFi plus 3g model says it has "assisted GPS" which is exactly what's in the 3GS phone now.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

And 'assisted GPS' is a superset of a regular GPS. The assistance only makes it faster in acquiring a fix.

The iPhone does actual satellite GPS, which WiFi assists. It's not clear to me that the iPad does true satellite nav.

But Apple did nothing to dampen all the expectation either :)

The model with a GPS will. The one without will geolocate using WiFi (which can be quite accurate sometimes).
