I had pre-ordered the GXR-S10 but have changed it to the A12 unit.
Although the pictures are not full size, samples are remarkable IMO.
thank you for the link! (Benjamin forgot to send it to me)

keep in mind, please, that these are from a pre-production unit, shot with pre-production firmware (already upgraded once since he started shooting with it). these are also JPEGs from the camera.

i am sure there are more pics from earlier if you check the thread (as i know those were only taken last night) -- with more to come. he has the two modules, so there will be samples from both.

This is going to be a hell of a camera

I don't think I am going to be able to wait for one more month :0

Harold, are you in Paris right now?

if so, Marcel (L'Instantané, 01 43 55 02 32) ‎expects to get them sooner than that... though the list of people lining up has already started :)

With many comments about the usability of the GXR. Benjamin (Benaparis) got a sample GXR from Ricoh's office in Paris and apparently Cam Wilder (wildeone here on DPR) should be getting the same sample GXR.

However the samples posted are resized JPEGs, so it's difficult to judge IQ from them.

Benjamin seems to think AF speed is OK with the 50mm A12 module and good with the 24-72mm zoom S10 module, but he points out that the firmware is not the final production firmware yet, things should still improve.

true... i've already played with it and will do so some more (we're trading off).

as i've stated before, this is a pre-production unit so bear that in mind... the firmware was already updated because neither of us could get a decent RAW conversion (no profile). with the update, we now can't see the RAW files at all -- so you need to bear that in mind.

i'm afraid i changed the JPEG settings to b/w (shot all night with this -- grrrrrrrrrrr!) and he kept them that way for quite some time (very cool way to look through the EVF, btw), both of us thinking we had RAWs to work with. alas, we don't right now.

so we are both keeping our JPEGs sized down, as we don't feel it is a proper way to judge them. you get the essence, though, which is all we're trying to convey.

and he said that the samples are "Leica like"...

;-)
Whatever that means, I guess Ricoh marketing has correctly positioned the GXR, then!

Nice !

I'll be delighted to see some of your B&W Paris shots taken with the GXR/50mm combo.
Cheers,

thank you, Andrew.

i have to admit it's been quite a learning curve for me... i have shot with nothing but my rangefinders for the past year and a half and find the GXR/A12 combo so similar that i keep on using it like it's the M8 (thinking i'll get more in the scene, etc.). on my camera (the original one), you have to practically pound on the shutter and GXR doesn't take kindly to that (can you say shutter shake?).

i'm truly having a blast with it, however. it's a joy to use!

Hi Wildone! Have a rangefinder related question for you. If you had to choose between having only the M8 or the GXR, which would you choose? (Let's pretend that you just have a 50mm prime on the M8 so focal length isn't an issue.)

I'm really curious because the only way I can fund a GXR purchase is by selling my R-D1 but I really enjoy using the R-D1...

that is a ruthless question because the R-D1 has to be my favourite camera ever. (that, along with the original GRD are two cameras i will use until they can't be revived.)

what are you unhappy with regarding the Epson? what is the lure of the GXR? macro? AF? more megapixels? you really need to think about these things...

Wouldn't it have to be a 35mm lens on the M8 in your scenario? ;)

Calvin, play nice. we all knew what BeatCatCow was asking... i get enough anality from the Leica forum ;)

The curse of being a former editor, wildeone. ;)

And in similar vein, what is your answer to BearCatCow's question -- M8 or GXR?
--
darn! i thought i could get away without answering...

i have a lot of money invested in good glass that i adore, in all different focal lengths. as i am not planning on selling them, i would have to say the M8.... when you consider my 50mm (f/1.4) equivalent costs new more than four times more than the GXR, can you blame me?

I would have been most surprised if you had answered differently.

The GXR with the A12 lensor is looking to be good but let's keep our feet on the ground.

Good to see that you have, wildeone.

I do feel that the GXR may well give the Leica X1 a good run for its money and may well turn out to be not only a better buy but also a better camera.

But promise not to tell people on the Leica Forum, you know how easily they get upset. ;)
