Help! Best LCD Monitor for photo editing!

Thanks for your input mate! I am looking at a Dell Monitor the Ultra Sharp U2410 24 inch monitor...this also has an IPS screen. I apprecite your taking the time to help me out once again my friend!

Very best regards
Leo
I am using a Dell 2209WAF LCD 22" wide screen which is an IPS screen with 1680 x 1050 resolution. At the time, it seemed to be great value for money for the size, and I am very happy with it. :-) I calibrate it with the Spider Pro.

Hi Paul

Looks like a really nice monitor but it is getting up out the price range I have set for myself. I think the Dell U2410 will do the job for me...I still am after a DA*300mm lens in the Spring so I have to pace myself.
Thanks for your advice mate!

Best regards
Leo
Expensive and intended for professionals, but if you can swing it, this monitor is arguably better than anything that's already been discussed.

Thanks for your informative replies mate! I have decided to go for the Dell U2410 Ultra Sharp monitor with IPS panel...it is priced at the outer reaches of the amount I set for myself but I think it will do a fine job for me. Maybe at last I will see the noise everyone else seems to see in my shots! Mind you I like some noise/grain there...a hold over for me from my old Tri-X days!

I will be working in ProRGB a la Lightroom, which seems to like that and my printer does too! I think the Dell Ultra Sharp U2410 may be the one for me and should do a more than adequate job for my needs!
Good to hear from you Dave!

All the best

One issue that keeps coming up is that the high gamut models are not always very good when run at SRGB mode. So, if you are likely to be working in ARGB and have your monitor calibrated to that mode, you'd be best of with one of the high-gamut models (like the Dell or NEC 2690, but not the 2490). But if you are going to be working in SRGB space, you can't rely on the SRGB modes of these monitors to give you good results.
Yes... wide gamut monitors bring their own issues. If you use such a monitor you will soon appreciate the virtues of colour-managed apps, including a web browser.

Sounds like you got a good one Roland! I will be calibrating my monitor but I am not sure yet which outfit I will get to do that. Thanks for your help mate!

Leo
Yeah - you probably needs a colorimeter to calibrate your monitor.

But - I dont know if I was lucky or not. My Philips 200P is very near to calibrated. When the calibration plug-in kicks in I can hardly see the color difference. Way back when I had a CRT monitor - the calibration was dramatic. A bluish monitor became much warmer when the plug-in corrected it. But for this monitor - I could really stop using the plug-in. But ... ut is comfortable to know that it is correct.

And it is the Dell U2410 for me! I am confident from everything I have read and heard that this is the one for me! Thanks for your input my friend!

I am in the same situation, and have been looking at some of the monitors mentioned here, like the 24in Dell and the NEC WUXI models.

Are you going to watch movies on the monitor as well? Is your slideshow app colour space aware? Is windows 7? How are you printing? I think it is unlikely you will create calibrations for both SRGB and ARGB mode and keep swapping - at least that's the conclusion I came to for myself. I am not even sure if my huey will be able to create reliable calibrations for a high-gamut monitor.

If you are after something cheaper, there is also the p221w from NEC - not an IPS panel but apparently not too bad either.

I haven't made up my mind yet on this question either - at the moment it looks like either the 2490 or the dell 2410 for me.

Many thanks for your wise input mate! I have chosen the Dell U2410 to work with...from everything I have read and heard it is the way to go without rupturing my poor bank account! ;-)

Have one .... Other choices
NEC 2490
Dell U2410 (same panel as in HP)
NEC 23" e-IPS (supposedly good)

I have picked the Dell U2410 Ultra Sharp monitor as my monitor to work with...I think it will do everything I need and more! Thanks for your help mate!

Leo
Got the Dell 2408 WFP here.

It rocks. But, of course, shortly after I bought it they came out with an IPS panel for roughly Cdn $50 more.

Never seen it, or used it. It might be better...in some sense of the word...

FYI, I almost bought it too, and may yet, but this one is a head and shoulders above my Samsung 930b....

Both are, FYI, calibrated (Spyder 3 Pro), and yes, my graphics card can do that... :)

Mind you, printing on my 9500 is still a *****.... :)

If I were going into business as a photographer or even if I were a very serious advanced amateur I would buyt an Eizo monitor in a snap but their prices go beyond what I set for myself...I still have to buy a DA*300 in the Spring so I have to be careful here!
I thank you for your valuable input Arie!

Best regards mate

Leo;

There's quite a number of good LCD displays to choose from at various price points. Check out the following article on the matter (from Photolife magazine):

http://www.photolife.com/articleInfolettre.php?idArticle=194

If you want the best, I can vouch for an Eizo LCD display .. mine's been going for 6 years now and has rarely required recalibration of colour.

Good luck with it Leo, I am sure it is a great monitor, and it currently is my most likely candidate too. It appears to have a usable SRGB mode, addressing one of my concerns - and a basic huey is supposed to work well with it too.

One question for those who have it - the height quoted (493mm) is the minimum height, with the monitor at the lowest setting, correct?

Hi Leo!

Thanks for the recommendation. I haven't really been keeping up with LCD tech, but in my experience Dell LCD monitors have always been a good value. I've currently got a pair of 2408WFPt's at work, and even though these use a cheaper TN panel I think they're pretty good for what we paid for them.
The 2408WFP uses a quite good S-PVA TFT LCD panel.

Prad.de "Very Good"
http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/review/2009/review-dell-2408wfp.html

I know the buzz is around IPS type panels with H-IPS being the latest iteration but note that Eizo and Lacie use S-PVA almost exclusively. There is a reason for that. Me... I use an S-PVA at the moment but would likely be quite happy with a U2410 or Lp2475w.
I myself have been thinking of getting an LCD for home use, and was going to check out Dell's latest offerings. However, I'm intrigued by the new Apple iMacs as these supposedly use excellent LED-backlit IPS panels. The 27" model seems like a stunning value, for those who need that large of a display. But I think the 21.5" model would be the more realistic choice for me.
Dell may be about to introduce a new 27" monitor - the U2711 - this is all speculation but odds are that it will use the same TFT LCD panel as the Mac but has a matte screen and maybe no LED backlight (which I'm just fine with, a properly designed CCFL backlit monitor can outperform an LED model)

Personally, I'm not all that impressed with the Apple 24" LED backlit monitor, in part because of its' glossy screen. It does seem to have a decent factory calibration however. Not all Apple products use or have used the IPS panel, some have used the less than desirable TN panel.

Hi,

Lots of actual models recommended - thats good.

Lots of brand recommendations - thats more or less irrelevant.

All brands have TN based monitors. And those shall be avoided for color work - because they have a problem with inconsistency with regard to viewing angle - so they cannot be calibrated.

The safest bet today is one if the IPS version based monitors. The most promising looks to be E-IPS. Its cheap, low power, fast and good color. Unfortunately E-IPS is very new and I dont know if any such monitors have been thoroughly and independently tested.

This page is somewhat old - but it is still helpful.

And here is a list of IPS monitors

Two e-IPS monitors have now been tested "thoroughly" and independently.

Note that these two are only suitable for working in the sRGB color space. If you want to work in a wide gamut color space like AdobeRGB you'll need to look at some of the other more upscale monitors.

There are several hundred posts by users of the Dell 2209WA in the "PC Talk" forum and more in some of the other forums here.

Thanks for that info, mine's actually a slightly different model - 2408WFPt (note the "t" at the end). Mine lacks the memory card reader and all the different types of video inputs (it only has a VGA and DVI input). But hopefully the screen's the same - I suspect it is, given the good viewing angles I see (much better than my Dell laptop).

Anyways, I believe we paid around $350 US for these (last year), so that would make them an excellent buy if they do have the S-PVA panel. And as others have pointed out, the outstanding, rotatable stand is nearly worth the price of admission.

You are correct about Apple's past displays, but the new iMacs do use IPS panels and they've been getting very favourable reviews so far. I agree that the glossy screen is not optimal for all environments/applications.

Thanks for your input mate! I am looking at a Dell Monitor the Ultra Sharp U2410 24 inch monitor...this also has an IPS screen.
