Help! Best LCD Monitor for photo editing!

I am using NEC 3090 WQXi monitor with Spectraview II software and Xrite Eye One calibrator.

But it is a little owerkill and wide gamut colors actually makes more problems than gain. Actually there is zero gain - greens, magentas and so one sometimes looks unnaturally owersaturated. So, If all others are more or less sRGB monitors, printers and papers, then I usually feel uncomfortable - may be my pics will look too flat for them, If I correct them on my calibrated wide gamut monitor.

So Nec 2490 is noted to be like a standard for photo industry - it is exactly precise for calibration and so on. Please be so kind and search on internet for this specific model.

But if money is not concern - buy Nec 3090. All that extra space and extra pixels allows to see pictures with almost 100% magnification (for older cameras, like IstD..K100D etc, because screen is already 4mpix. So, just after this big screen I really felt difference in bokeh 3D rendering for limited lenses and so on). And of course - measurbation with 100% magnification to study PF and other flaws - it is not just measurbation, it is learning process.

Thanks for your input Vaards! Since I have already chosen the monitor I want (I think anyway) your comments will be of even greater value to those who are bookmarking this thread for reference when they upgrade their monitors!

As for me, I am as changeable as the weather is, I may end up with a NEC monitor in the end after Christmas! Fickled Leo! ;-)

Very best regards mate
Leo

I am about to replace my old Samsung Syncmaster cathode tube type
I see the latest technology is the LED lit LCD.

EG: the replacement for the Samsung 305T will be the XL30.

Anyone here have an opinion?

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1282276
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/monitors/2008/08/18/samsung-syncmaster-xl30/1

"Ultimately, however, it's those professionals – graphic artists, publishers and the like – that stand to get most out of this wonderfully colour-accurate monitor. If sufficient budget is available, we doubt the XL30 will disappoint for those users. For everyone else, we recommend you plump for a more conventional and affordable 30-incher and if you want to spend a little bit more, it's still well-worth considering the LCD3090WQXi at around £1,500 (inc. VAT). But one word of advice: make sure you never set eyes on the XL30. That way you won't have to discover quite how much you are missing when it comes to colour accuracy."

Wow, surprising how Dell is reacting to the customer complaints on this monitor! I've always thought of Dell as a leader, but this definitely brings them down several notches in my opinion.

I wonder how many other OEM's are using this same technology, from the same supplier (LG?), if they have the same issues, and how they are responding to their customers...

Glad you were up late-ish and could catch the deal, Leo. You can put the saving towards your next lens!

I hope that you're pleased with the monitor.

hi Leo,

If you can find the older Apple Cinema Display 23" that would be my recommendation. They have a matte screen, and are IPS type LCD panels. Really attractive monitors to boot!

Thanks Mark but I have already ordered the Dell Ultra Sharp U2410 which also has a matte screen and an IPS LCD panel. I appreciate your input though Mark! Many thanks for that!

sounds like you got the right screen with the right features for the right price.

IPS screens are hard to find. in the LCD world, photographers/photo editors are a small percentage of LCD applications. Hence, the laws of supply and demand are always negatively affecting the IPS price.

Whenever I would cover the Consumer electronics show, I noticed as years passed the number of quality LCD makers using IPS were dwindling.

sounds like your Dell will be a great performer.

cheers!

that seems to be one of the best photo editing monitors out there. please leave feedback when you put it to good use. I may have to pick one of these up as well!

A good replacement for the Samsung Syncmaster cathode tube type 1100DF 21 inch monitor,
is Samsung 1100 MB ( CRT, Dot 0,20 (H) and 130 Khz horizontal refresh),
and Sony F 520 (CRT, Dot 0,22 and 137 Khz horizontal refresh),

both of them 10 X better then the best Eizo CG LCD, or any other LCD, OLED backlight or not...

For greater rezolution and high IQ, wait for true OLED, with NO LCD !

Can those CRT's cover 100% of the sRGB and 100% of the AdobeRGB color space?

With the rare exception of one CRT that was very limited in release, all the old CRT's are basically sRGB like devices. In fact, sRGB is based on a theoretical CRT with P22 Phosphors in a well defined reference environment. IOW, the only real sRGB device is one of those old CRTs!
