7D Low ISO Day 3

Very nice shots with excellent details and sharpness especially for a paper thin DoF at f2 / 200mm. It appears the AF was up to the task. How do you feel about your percentage of sharp keepers?

BTW I'd also really like to see a comparison with a DPP conversion but these are the best I've seen so far from Adobe beta.

Thanks for posting.

thanks for sharing. i just clicked through a few of these but they look a lot better than the day 1 shots. i see the same weird NR/sharpening is going on but to a lessor extent. it also looks like these were cropped down less.

After all of the comments I actually loaded DPP on my computer but my quick review suggests that I would have to abandon photomechanic which would change my editing and review process and therefore my time for review. I may try to process a few in DPP tomorrow and upload for comparison.

Remember that the day one shots were high ISO and therefore I did a little more processing in topaz vivacity. This PM was a very bright day with all of the negatives of bright cloudless sun but focus was much easier and I did a lot less sharpening on images most of which were shot at an ISO of 100.

In answer to the question regarding focus and keepers it is always a hard one. I was shooting the 7D with a 200 2L and also a 1D Mark III with a 300 2.8. I will actually be posting images shot with the other bodies tomorrow. My 1D Mark III has been back to Canon for the AF fix, I can't tell a major difference between the two bodies when it comes to autofocus. I could tell a difference between the 50D (worse) and the 1D Mark III.

Troll !!
Couldn't resist...

: )
I'm a D300 user (don't call me troll please :)) and looking to move to canon because of the price of 500/4 IS and 7D.

I see more noise at lower ISO compared to D300. Actually D300 has more noise than 40D. This was one of my complaint about D300.

Love this shot too

The file size is 2300X1900. Is this cropped or resized?

You are kidding aren't you? The D300 bears no comparison in real world shooting with the 7D for low ISO noise, the 7D is far superior and at higher iso's the 7D images clean up much better than the D300 ever did.

It's good to have actually used both cameras before making these kind of statements.

Part of what you are seeing is the extreme magnification of the 18MP sensor.. downsize the photo to the D300 resolution and the noise youa re seeing will go away for the most part. The problem with the high resolution criop sensors is , on a pixel level, it simply shows more than your eye would ever see. in print it isnt visible. The 50D taught me this lesson. Goo dluck with your choices.. Canon big glass for now is more affordable though i fear that may well change.

Please forgive the typos! A great speller I am, a great typist I am not!

Its a great camera but in no way bests the D300 other than 1 fps and resolution. I have looked at virtually every photo posted, and their is no way it is better IQ than my D300s. DXO will bear this out.

I'm talking about the pictures in his gallery. It's not side by side comparison. But you can see noise in shadow area much worse than 40D. D300 has noise in the sky and shadow area even at ISO 200. from my experience it's not this bad.

I hope you are not taking my words based on brand ownership. Like I said 40D is better than D300. If you ever tried to submit to stocks then you will understand what am I talking about. This kind of noise they can reject easily.

It could be the picture style. I don't know

Well if you are looking "at every photo posted" at web size you should also know that this gives no indication whatsoever to the true IQ, especially when comparing a 12MP sensor to an 18MP sensor. You obviously are happy with Nikon so stay there - no need to give uninformed statements about a camera you have not tried. Both cameras (D300s and and 7D) are fine devices but I can tell you after using both that your statement is inaccurate.

DXO results are NOT an indicator of IQ - I have used a D90 and a D700 and I can tell you IQ does not compare, DXO would have us believe the opposite!

Feeling insecure? Of cousre nothing can beat your NIkon, because it is Nikon, and because you own it!

I agree. If you downsize the image to D300 size 7D is cleaner. I also noticed 7D holds more details at higher ISO even though there's little bit more noise. SO you can clean it up.

The problem is that if there's noise at 100% view even at base ISO, you won't get the advantage of 18MP. If you are going to use it like a 10-12mp camera why should we deal with huge files? heck I wish if Canon have stayed at 12MP and improve noise and DR.
