Just bought a 5D Mark2 via the mail. I was surised to see it did not have a built in flash.

Do I not need it with this new camera?

My olf 30D had the built in flash.

I guess the point is: Why would you buy a camera without knowing the specs?

If you need built in flash and can still return it, you should. Built in flash can be useful but I rarely used it on my 30D and don't miss it at all on the 5DII.

On-cam flashes tend to give you poor light because they're so small and hard to diffuse. even when using something like the Puffer, you're only going to get moderate results.

Get a real flash (such as a 580 II) and you'll be much happier with the results.

Beyond that, the 5D2 clearly is advertised as not having an on-body flash - just as the 5D1. This shouldn't be a surprise after spending this much money on a body.

Because you now own a 'prosumer' camera. Canon (not Nikon) does not put a small, marginally effective, on-board flash on their 1D and 5D camera's. This has been the cause of much debate, but if I need a flash with one of these, its easy to quickly mount an EX flash.

Either get a 430EXII or 580EXII (or one of the older EX flashes) and you will not regret it. Throw in a Sto-Fen diffuser and you're set. Or if it really upsets you, you could sell it and get a consumer 50D (still a fine camera - not knocking it, I still have a 40D & 20D) and get the on-board flash. I'm surprised you haven't bought an EX flash if you had a 30D.

I know the feeling. I just took delivery of a 600/4 FD lens and I cannot get it to mount on my 5D (mark 1) no matter how much I force it.

It seems funny that when buying a camera the buyer wouldn't notice this but perhaps assumed it had a flash.

If you look at the op's profile they haven't posted in two and a half years. I guess they've been out taking photographs instead.
Wasn't the D60 a prosumer camera when it was released ? That has a flash.

flashes. Pick the flash that's best for your needs and use it. I've never used the built in flash on my 20D or my G10 either.

DotCom Editor replies:

No reason for surprise; you are, however, uninformed. Consumer cameras have built-in flashes (like my 20D). Professional cameras, like my 1D III and 5D II do not.

Go here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos5dmkii.asp

You'll see that for the item "Built-in Flash" the entry says "No." That means it does not have a built-in flash.

Why are you being such a dork?? It is not "flash activate" it's SHAZAM!!
You and everybody else know that, so don't mislead him!!

The quality of flash with a built-in pop-up flash is poor, so in an "almost-pro" camera, they assume that you will provide your own flash should you need it.

Quality flash comes from a larger source, and away from the lens axis.

It was either not powerful enough in the sun for fill-in or gave horrible white faces inside!

Take a look at my cobra flash tips and tricks and you might then want to buy one :-)

The reason the 5D2 does not have flash is the same reason it does not have liveview, autofocus, autoexposure, or any other of those other silly consumer features: real professionals know it is useless. Don't listen to the lowly amateurs when they tell you it's useful for fill flash and a variety of other purposes, they aren't part of the in crowd. Just listen to us and we'll tell you when it's OK to start liking popup flash. Hopefully it wont take quite as long as it did for autoexposure and autofocus. (Liveview is still a "silly consumer feature", but looks like soon it will be declared "pro".)

THAT'S funny!!!! :D

I frequently used built in flash on my 20D for fill in light with street scenes.

Alas none of the flash manufacturers have the guts to make just a silly small flash, small as a matchbox. Something that just doesn't stand out in a crowd and is easy to 'schlepp along' every day during long walks.
