Just picked up a new G10 and am wondering if anyone can recommend a small flash unit? Sunpack makes one but I've not heard much about it. Nikon makes the very cool little SB400 with a tilt head. and I'm hoping for something like that for my G10. I know Canon's full size flashes work well but I just don't want something that big for a compact camera.

The Sunpak RD2000 is a fine little unit. Not very powerful but adequate in bounce position inside a house - no more red eyes !

It is my understanding that Canon will come out with a small flash
unit for the G10 sometime this year. Probably in March.
Would you mind sharing your source for this info? One of the "canon rumor" things or other?

It would seem logical, given the gap in Canon flash capabilities (mostly in terms of having no small flash with tilt head) that they'd come out with something new...hopefully.

No that Vivitar 2000 is way to big. I want something the size of Nikon's SB 400. Guess I'll order the Sunpak then see what Canon comes out with later on. Thanks folks.

I've got no red eyes with my RD2000 - don't underestimate this little gem. Red eye issues are usually caused by proximity of the flash to the lens and subject ... so with a top mounted hotshoe flash (especially bounced) it's very difficult, if not darn near impossible to get red eye... Matt

The Sunpak RD2000 is the ticket.

superbly:

One is the new Sunpak RD-2000, a very flexible flash unit, dedicated to Canon cameras, and the other is the slightly larger, but 3 times as powerful Sunpak PZ-40X II. Here are two sets of photos showing what the units look like on the G9 and G10. Since both camera bodies have similar shapes, you can get a good idea as to what they look like on the current G series of cameras.

The setup on the left is the RD-2000 and the one on the right is the PZ-40X II.

Photos showing flash forward:

Photos showing flash in bounce position:

I recommend either one very highly, if anything, due to their compact size, and in the case of the PZ-40X II, the tremendous lighting capability of this unit. I have both of these models for both my Nikon and Canon digicams and have come to enjoy their TTL reliability.

Now if Canon came out with a long-needed replacement for the 220 EX - one that has bouncing capabilities, then any other recommendation would not be needed. But until that occurs, these are two awesome flash units - but bear in mind that the RD-2000 has considerably less power than the PZ-40X, but may wind up being chosen by more folks due to it's small size.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the heads up on that. I ordered one from Adorama for $79 with free shipping. There was a used one on Ebay with the bidding up to $70 and $10 shipping. Go figure.

Good to know. Thank you.

The great thing about the 220EX is that it takes FOUR batts for fast recycling, 2 batt flashes like the PZ40X are Very slow (though dunno about the Mk2 or RD) - also the problem with GN20 area flashes is that boucing is pretty futile anyway unless in very favourable conditions as there simply isn't the power there (a 580 Mk2 even struggles in a lot of venues at base ISO) so the 220EX is good as it is - fast charge whilst being small and hasn't the power to bounce anyway

Ben, Thanks for the photos. Pretty much sold me on an RD-2000.

I do have a question and apologize for going off topic but is that some kind of protective cover on the LCD of your G10? I'm new to the G10 and concerned about the vulnerability of the LCD.
