It is very unfair to compare a dslr with a P&S!... Then, it would be much easier to compare the shots from 2 P&S if they were smaller and next to each other!
Thanks for the try anyway! :-))

Hi L_Objectif -

Did you look at the pics at 100%? Especially in the corners?

For jpeg processing, the LX2 and LX3 beat the D80 18-200 VR by a mile for CA and distortion due to the LX's in camera correction processing. Sharpness is very close.

A small color correction on the LX3 pic brings it in line with the LX2.

Of course the D80 18-200VR is the clear winner from 60mm-200mm :-)

Hi again L_Objectif -

Here are the 100% crops. Org is available on pbase. You don't need it to see the differences, however.

The only place the d80/18-200VR wins is smoother shadow detail, IMHO.

D80 on left, LX3 on right, lower left, upper right, center

Don't like jpegs from both cameras(too much NR)
would love to see RAW samples using Adobe when it's available.

I guess your music room pictures of LX2 and LX3 have different colors because of different WBs. (See sofa)
Can you say which one is closer to real color?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Junho -

You're welcome! The green tinted windows in my house are tough on auto WB settings.

P1010070.JPG (LX3) is almost exactly right. In reality, the sofa cushion is an ivory white (i had to take it outside to see the real color). It will be interesting to see how the D80 does (about 30min from now).

Regards, Fred

Hi quest21, no you can only set it -2 through +2.

Can you disable NR on this camera?

WOW! What a poor performance by D80. LX2 and LX3 really stood the ground in this comparison.

I saw many areas on your pictures where LX2/3 actually delivered better results. Not speaking about corner softness and PF, CA.

This shows that buying a DSLR and then staying with kit lens is not a particularly good choice. For a DSLR to deliver, you really must put some good glass in front of the sensor.

Plus, contrast-based focusing on a pocket camera is sometimes more accurate.

Hi Vertigon -

Thanks. Unfortunately we do not have any spare room for you! We've been in Brunei for a couple of years and will probably stay anywhere from a few months to two years more. Depends on my work.

We really like the house and the Brunei people are great.

FredW you live in a nice house, do you want to adopt me by any chance?

Lol, thanks for the carefull consideration Fred, I doubt things would work out anyway, I eat alot of ice-cream and don't do much around the house.

Hi Fred:

I presume that you rent that house in Brunei. I'm curious about the house rental rates there. Could you please tell me the rental fee for a nice 3br or 4br house there with private pool?

Thanks,
Teera

The whole comparison is not fair .. because all Nikon CCD DLSR sensors were really sub par .. until recently when they finally switched to CMOS. This was the main reason Nikon was trailing so badly behind Canon in the DSLR area.
Just to explain the apparent anomaly.

Another "anomaly" of that time, ca 2006 still in effect today: the Sony R1 (with a CMOS sensor !) still beats the best of the DSLR cams and lenses on IQ and resolution (Google tests for these )
See an example there

Camera makers (or rather buyers) are not a rational bunch ;-)
