YarcPlus rocks!!

I see. I did not read any manul. Please help me with the "dark" file you received. Thanks in advance
Also, the conversion preview is very blurry. Is it normal? Is it
just for looking at ev and white balance?
Hugo,

The conversion preview is not sharp because the Canon SDK makes it
that way. They have not responded as to why this is so, and it is
this way in all SDK based software.

We will continue to discuss with Canon.

D60 helps me to keep the best moments of my family. After trying hundreds of shots I realised that the D60 does not underexpose. It is the weighted metering effect. We are making friend now and it no more lets me down.
Besides, I love the 28-135 IS lens.

Thanks to the Yarcplus people. They really really fast and responsive. I guess they are as fast as the fastest L lens we can find on earth, even though I am not yet a registered user.

I realised how I "made" the mistake:

That it is: Yarcplus' default settings preset the linear conversion, which I cannot uncheck "linear" option(the "linear" check box is freezed and deactivated) when the output format is set to JPEG or PNG 8. And, when either JPEG or JNP format is selected, it displays as "8-bit JPEG/PNG Non-Linear Conversion" while actually the freezed and preseted "Linear" option rules. So I have to reselect a tiff output format and then uncheck the linear box before I go to the JPEG or PNG format.

A trick, at least to me.
Besides, I just noted different interface against canon converter,
please tell me how it rocks? I am too new to digital imaging! But,
I am a normal consumer.
I have always used Breezebrowser in the past, but this morning I
purchased YarcPlus to use with my EOS 1D.

The new veiwing options for the 1D in Yarc are way better than the
twain driver, & the arf seems to work real well also.

If you haven't tried this program yet, check it out:

Oh I forgot the one other useful feature (that is already planned) that would make Yarc Plus Complete:

Extracting Exif data fromt he CRW file, so I don't have to keep all those silly THM files all over the place...

Great product.

They are quick with bug fixes. Very friendly too.

I'm looking forward to the thumbs view, "sticky" white
balance/exposure adjustment, and the ability to set different
parameters for each image then process them all at once (ala
Canon's Raw 2.0 converter or Scott Professional).

When those are all in, it will be the only conversion tool I use (I
have BreezeBrowser and ScottProfessional as well)

-Steve Reed

Indeed Michael I've suspected a little more "work" in ARF 2, because it does seem to give somewhat sharper images than either ARF-1 and ARF-Off, just a tiny bit but it's there.

22 seconds to converting and saving a Raw into a 24Mb-artifacts-free file isn't a bad time, but... hey Don... your machine cuts this time nearly by a factor of two...! Well, you're just ready for the next 8 Mp camera... ;))

Marco

Sounds like a bit of a bug in the interface and something I would probably have gotten hung up on. I'm really looking forward to trying out YarcPlus now that I have a computer that can crank through RAWs in 10 seconds, vs. the 45 of my old P450.

Danny,

Yes you are quite right in calling it a bug. It had already been fixed in the currently poste V1.7 beta 2, but I didn't think anbout it when talking with Hugo. I emailed to him that this was not "his" mistake it was a UI bug. The V1.7 beta versions work correctly that if the Linear check box is grayed out, the state is ignored whether or not it is checked "behind the Gray". Hugo did nothing wrong.

When Hugo dod the conversion he had the TagFileName option turned on so immediately Iknew it was a Linear coversion because we append all the picture settings to the target file when this option is turned on. So the "L8" told me that the file had been converted as a linear.

The feature is quite useful in that if you use it, you know how each file was converted base on the filename.

I have used YarcPlus along with ICC profiles by Wojtek to convert D60 files with great looking results, both in linear and non-linear. Is the final output limited to the sRGB color space, as is the case when using the Canon software, or when I open in Photoshop and assign Adobe RGB do I get something close to that space?

Please take the time to read the manuals/documentation for your
software before starting to ask all kinds of questions.

-John Petter.
I see I was a bit too quick to post the above. Pardon me, didn't mean to sound so bitchy.....

There are so many people just asking and not doing any effort of their own to learn the basics, so I mentally put Hugo So in that basket. He had a good reason to post his questions as his problem arised from a software glitch.
I'll try to think at least twice next time. ;-)

Jack,

We do not affect the color in any way except for what the Canon software does. We allow you to TAG the files with any color space that you wish, however. But this does not affect color, it just tells profile aware applications like Photoshop in what space to open the file. So this is a convenience issue rather than a pixel affecting issue.

I hope that was clear.

I am using YarcPlus 1,71 beta an so far it works fine.

However, using ARF in any mode (Auto, ARF 2 and even more ARF 1) there is a loss of fine detail if contrast is low in this details. Sorry not to be able to have pictures as example but I don´t have an URL.

My camera (1D) is set to standard settings, Color Space Adobe RGB.

Other people with the same problem?

How can I improve it?

Greetings from Oyle, Germany, 800 inhabitants, sunshine, good weather for picture hunting (was out indeed)

See my post above, where I describe my experience with ARF using both M1 and M2 modes.

The converted image itself does appear less sharp initially with either M1 or M2 (and M1 is less sharp than M2, as you indicated). But if you then apply appropriate Unsharp Mask, you end up with a sharp image, but with less noise than you'd have if you hadn't use ARF.

Hope this helps.

I initially had problems getting YarcPlus 1.6 to work with my Win98 system but after posting here I was contacted by Michael Tapes and asked to e-mail him personally with a description of my problem. I sent him a brief run down of the error I was receiving and he promptly sent me a link to the file I needed to make YarcPlus work. After downloading the file YarcPlus fired right up.

After playing with it in demo mode I bought the registration key. So far I'm pretty impressed with it. Michael's personal attention to my problem and his participation in the forum was a great selling point.

YarcPlus beats the hell out of Zoombrowser! :-)

That is a very beautiful bird! Too bad you couldn't get behind the screen, but you do what you can, and sometimes you just have to work within the limits present.

It's a little hard to say with less than a full-size image, but the birds features certainly look very sharp. There seems to be very little noise (although downsampling can hide noise quite effectively). The overall image is a little dark on my monitor, so you might play around with curves/levels in your image editor and see what it looks like brightened up a bit.

Keep on shooting!

Well, in classic PW style I jinxed myself by bragging about YarcPlus working so well for me now... It worked fine after entering the registration key last night and but I tried to fire it up this afternoon it wouldn't start. I contacted MichaelT by e-mail and he went right to work on it. He spent several hours today working on my problem. In fact, we just quit for the night at around 11:00 PM EST! He spent an entire Saturday evening and a good part of the afternoon trying to fix my problem!

Seems that there is some sort of issue with certain Windows 98 machines. I think it has only affected two others besides me at this time. Anyway, while the problem is very frustrating I am still, at this point, a happy customer due to the service I have received from Michael. I remain confident that the bug will be worked out soon and I'll once again be completely happy with YarcPlus. Until then I'll do what I've been doing with other Windows programs... using a workaround and being happy that there is one! ;-)

I wonder how many other software developers would have spent that much time during any one day, much less Saturday, working directly with a customer trying to quickly solve a problem that only affected three out of hundreds? I doubt I could have even made contact with most of them during the weekend. As frustrating as this has been I just can't be upset about it considering Michael's dedication to my problem. :-)

Thanks for the effort, Michael! :-)

While my problem hasn't been ironed out yet, I feel safe in saying that Michael has already gone far beyond what any other software developer would have done for me and he done it on a Saturday evening to boot!

I'm confident that my problem will soon be worked out and I'll be a happy stress free customer once again. I'm still happy due to the support he has shown but the stress level is running a bit high at this point. :-)

helping me till we got it up and running.
Michael, if you read this thanks again so much!!!!!!!!

Chris,

Thanks for your kind remarks..And thanks to your efforts to help solve this issue. You also gave up your Saturday night, and many customers would have said.."I paid my money, it's not MY job to fix it...you go fix it!". But you agreed to work as a partner.

That is how I feel about the sales relationship. When we as consumers buy a product we become a partner of the seller, or in this case the developer. So in this case we both lived up to our "parntership agreement".

Having said that, in the normal course of events, when a bug is found, we reproduce it and we fix it. There is no responsibility on the part of the user.

This case is quite special. As you pointed out, there are 3 of you that have this problem. The millions (well a little less) of other YarcPlus users are running just fine. The problem for us is that we cannot reproduce the problem on our 3 98/ME test systems. That is why we enlisted your help. So thank you again. We should have it tracked down today with a fix shortly thereafter. Thanks to your (and the other 2 people's) help.

So that others are aware, this problem is limited to Windows 98/ME and so far it has been reported by 3 people (out of millions...OK, OK). So a very rare problem indeed. For all the YarcPlus users that are running fine, this is not an obsucre bug that you have to worry about. If you are on W98/ME and YarcPlus is running then you are not affected at all. So no need to ask about it or worry about it. And we have created a workaround version for the 3 people who have the problem, so they are up and running.

PictureFlow LLC (the parent company of YarcPlus) is my primary "job". I have a consulting business as well in the Pro Audio field, but PictureFlow is my day job, not what I do when I get home from work. Other PictureFlow products are coming soon, and so my desire to build a loyal custmers base is both my nature and good business.

So thanks, Chris. I appreciate your kind words, and your patience. We'll have this nailed down shortly.
