And the release date is ...

But that is much earlier than I anticipated.

However.....we dont know how long it has been in development...probably a year even more.

This is a rumour, guys, please excuse me if it is not correct.

The new Sony camera is to be released on June 4th.

The date has been circulating in a German website for some days:

http://www.photoscala.de/node/3199

True or false ... ?
Well seeing as Im struggling with the Hungarian language I have not bothered to learn german. :-)
(Lucky I can speak english...lol )

What does it say? Any more details?
Which one? How many pixels? Etc, etc.

I just got the alpha 100 (and cant afford the more expensive one now anyway) but I am interested none the less. :-)

Peace

The latest photos look very much like a photoshop / basic modelled
mockup and not 3 weeks from a finished product.
I think I remember the same type of comments from when the first official photo of the A100 was leaked last spring - only a month or two before the official launch.

I guess that 'official press photos' just happen to look this way ... ?

Maybe it is a final pic (below) but the lens looks very bare and the buttons on the right hand top of the camera are very widely spaced without either dial or top lcd - seems like a waste of space there.

The more I look at the photo though the more finished it seems to become in my eyes! Well we'll see in a few weeks...

There is no reason to believe that any of these photos represent the current state of the camera. Sony would not want to release a photo of the finished camera until they are ready to announce it.

It is quite possible that marketing concerns are a bigger factor in the exact scheduling of the announcement than the time required to complete the camera.

Excactly, Dan.

Incidentally I happen to know how the story of how this picture was first leaked last spring by a Minolta employee to a retired American photo journalist. He shared it with some friends in a small webforum ... and then in a very few days the pic came to emerge everywhere.

Back a that time, there were dozens and dozens of posts here at dpreview and elsewhere saying that this picture was
  • an obvious fake
  • very, very unlikely
  • clearly manipulated
and so on. A few months later the pic appeared to be just one of the downloads along with the Alpha 100 press release.

I have seen the same tendency to deny some news that people may or may not like to have. Some times, even the messenger is being killed (like the Nikon Rockwell guy).

Must be something psychological --- ?

Well its hard to know. But without going on too much..I agree with Dan..in that the semi has a load of wasted space on the top plate.

So I really hope the images are not the final production camera........

If they are then the design team has let itself down badly.

I was going to type the same thing. The whole top plate needs a serious look into. Buttons & knob look complete out of place.

camera........
Yeah, this time, we should hope that it's not final design. Or should I say Sony playing it dumb this time as they told the whole world few months ahead what they were "planning" to do.
If they are then the design team has let itself down badly.
Just hoping, it's not nightmare of Sony 'klan' :)

The studio shots of the semi-pro and flagship models are in the same style as the leaked ones for the A-100. I don't really know why they'd bother doing such detailed product shots (for press packs etc) of totally unrelated prototypes. I think the design cues are going to be quite indicative of the production models. Leaks happen.
It is quite possible that marketing concerns are a bigger factor in

There'll be pull from both directions. Let's hope that Marketing don't compromise the execution of the camera, and that Engineering don't delay it uneccessarily due to perfectionism :-).

Cheers,
Daniel.

For what it's worth, I went down the street to my local dealer to talk about getting the Zeiss 135 and he said I should wait. When I asked why, he said that Sony will be releasing the "first" of the new dslr's in June.

There you go. It might be vaporware, but, you never know.

I don't understand the delaer's rationale. The Zeiss 135mm/1.8 covers (at least) a 43.3mm image circle. The only reason not to buy one (other than not being able to afford one :-) is if Sony were bringing out a camera with an even larger sensor. So the implication of the dealer is that Sony will now be entering the medium format market and we should wait for lenses which have an image circle cover 56mm by 56mm???? :-)

Cheers,
Daniel.

There isn't a second control dial. Unless you are talking about a thumbwheel. Then I'll bet it's on the back.

What's weirding me out is the relocation of the mode dial (PASM) from one side of the prism to the other. I've come to know and love the mode dial on the right of the prism. :(

Oh well, I'll adapt. Especially if we are looking at 12MP+. :)

The discussion does not say that there is any specific release date for the new SONY DSLR. And the introductory article even refutes it.

What a waste of time - such a long thread - did let me practice my German though...

Well, that's not entirely true. One poster ( http://www.photoscala.de/node/3199#comment-8130 ) stated that Sony will make an announcement on June 4th. He said that a lot of insiders knew of that date and that he expected some leaks on engadget.com in the next days.

Furthermore he said that the content of this announcement would come as quite a surprise and that the various guesses circulated in the various internet fora would be quite off the mark.
But of course his credibility remains dubious.

Carsten

In what way did that mean for you to wait with the Zeiss 135?
