E-20 goes to Monterey and Moss Landing

I just HATE you guys that live near a coast like this. What
beautiful colors and interesting subjects. I think I lke the 8th
one of the rocks and surf best.
Truly that area has a lot of things to catch the eye of a photographer.

That day was my first experiments with a circular polarizing filter. My reaction is mixed - it enhanced some of the water shots by removing glare but it also introduced some graininess (noise) into the sky. I will probably continue to carry it around and use it around water selectively.

I must go back sometime at low tide and examine the tide pools again.

Hi Don,

Really colorful and lovely shots. Very well composed. Brings back memories. My father taught at the Navel Post Graduate School there in the 50's and 60's and I spent my childhood growing up in the woods on Jack's Peak…sigh. I am learning to use a circular polarizer too and wondered a about a couple of things. One, what brand are you using? And two, did you leave the filter on all the time and just put it in the "neutral" position if you didn't want the effect, or did you take it on and off all the time? Did you just use it for water shots or anything else? Thanks,
Lory

The filter is an inexpensive Quantaray that I picked up at the local camera store ($35). Throughtout the day, I was taking the filter off and putting it on, not just turning it such that the effect was nullified. My general conclusion after looking at the pairs of shots was that in general, the filter did more harm than good. True, it did enhance some of the water shots a lot but at the price of increased noise in the blue sky.

I will keep the filter but use it sparingly. I also found that, all other things held constant, the shutter speed at a given f-stop was divided by 3 or 4 with the filter on. It kind of makes the effective ASA 20 or 30 from 80. Bummer. I hear that the expensive CP filters allow more light through.

Hope this helps,

Don

Thanks Don,

Yes that does help. That is the same brand that I have. I used it once, and was not happy with how dark everything looked. Probably just me needing to learn when to use it and when not to bother.
Thanks,

Do you know if they are going to do
anything with that abandoned Military base?
The part of Fort Ord that can be seen from Hiway 1 consists only of
boarded up buildings. I am not aware of any plans the military has
of doing anything there.
Most of the housing is now occupied by civilians and students - I think CSUMB uses some of the base as part of their campus.
It's still seriously toxic though...

When I was there this last summer, I drove around looking at this huge Military base Fort Orb. It appeared there was lots of new housing that was built there but was abbandoned. I was not thinking of the Military using it at all. I was wondering about the community reclaiming it. I also was interested in why it was closed down. I know another base or two that was closed sold the housing developements to the public at auction. The housing there seems like it is just decaying. It was like being in a ghost town driving through there.

Hi Don,

Some very nice photos. I was up in Big Sur last summer and the area is a photographer's dream. Hwy1 from San Simeon through Monterey is one of my favorite drives. Did you have a chance to go into Edward Weston's backyard aka Point Lobos?

Best,

Paul
Here is a link to some new E-20 pictures I took along the Monterey
Bay on the California coast. Summer is coming ...

I have not been to Pt. Lobos recently. Went there several years back a few times to dive. Must go there sometime - oh for more time to get out and take pictures of interesting things.
