Quick Poll RE: Epson printhead clogging

I've had the Stylus Photo, 800, 1200, 700, 1270, and the 2000P. I'm currently running the latter two. I've never had a significant problem (somethng that couldn't be fixed by 1 or 2 cleaning cycles) with any of them. My current printers are the best of the lot. I have also used all the printers frequently, i.e., at least once a week if not more. I also turn off the printers when they are not being used and I use the printer switch. I used a variety of third party inks with my 700 including MediaStreet Generations Ink, MIS ink, and Lysonic Inks. None caused any significant problems although I did not use them for a long time. That is about it.

I have an Epson 870 SE. I use new Epson cartridges only, never refilled. I have never had a problem with clogged heads. My printer is on all the time.

I have owned and used an Epson 700, 870 and 780. I do not currently still own the 780. I sold it because it just made too much noise for me compared to my 870. Never had any real problems with clogged heads. A coulps of times in the past I had to go through one or two cleaning cycles on my 870 and that would clear things up. I use my 870 regularly, three, four times a week and only for photo's. I use only the printer switch to turn it on and off per Epson's instuctions. Have been refilling my cartridges for the last 6 months with third-party inks without having to do any extra cleaning cycles on top of what the printer will do on it's own when replacing cartridges.

I have owned a 750, an 870, and now have a 1200. They all clog. I spend more ink running cleaning cycles than printing pictures. My HP 950 never clogs. The 1200 prints are a little better than the HP, plus it is wide carriage. If you don't print at least several days a week, better take a hard look at HP or Canon.

Opening Disclaimer: I do not own a photo printer yet. I have no
allegiance to Epson, Canon, or HP. The point of this poll is to
test a theory I have about the clogging printheads.

There have been many rumours in this forum and elsewhere regarding
Epson printheads clogging. I would like to know if you have
experienced clogging printheads? And if so, do you use only new
Epson ink cartridges or do you refill with some other
manufacturer's ink or aftermarket non-Epson cartridges?

I have noticed that quite a few of the people in this forum refill
ink cartridges and I am wondering if this is the reason that the
printheads clog.

Thanks,

I currently run 3 epson photo printers and have owned every one they made since several years ago, never had clogging problems, as a matter of fact all but one of the old ones that I sold off to friends are still prining fine and one is over 5 years old.

My 785epx arrived Monday I printed about 10 8X10's that day. I was very pleased with the output factoring in the rebate only paid $80 delivered.

Tuesday ran about 3 or 4 8X10's through and noticed black spots on the last print. Did a nozzle check, and sure enough more than half of the black didn't even print. Cleaned it once and has been ok so far, but a clog in the first 2 days?? If it does it again it's going back.

nary a clog on a 1200 in about 2 1/2 years. never considered using anything

but their ink in their cartridges, would never experiment . if it aint broke why fix

it and/or take a stupid chance of somebody else' ink that may screw up a great printer forever. that's what happened to brooks in shutterbug. ralph

a clog will most likely happen right away. once you cleaned you should be good to go.

So, are you saying that Epsons ship their printers with a CLOG waiting to happen? Seems funny...

I have had a 785epx for about 5 months now, the only time I had a problem with clogging was when I tried a cartridge from Myinks.com. Not only clogged the heads badly but they would not stand behind their guarantee because I waited until 31 days after ordering to contact them and they have a 30 day limit. So I guess if you buy a bunch like they want and the third one will not work on the 31 day you are SOL. Replaced junk cartridge with real epson, ran 3 cleaning cycles and haven't had a clog since.

well i've had a 1200 for about 2 years, i've never refilled but i usually use 3rd party carts. i acually just used an epson cart for the first time in a long time, and it seemed to clog, or run out of ink in one nozzle? but i just replaced it with a new 3rd party cart and it's clogging all over the place it seems... sigh

Decided to try my first Epson in many years recently (three weeks ago). I have avoided them like the plague for the longest time due to reliability issues long ago. I bought an 820 from my local Staples.

Printer #1:

I had clogging the second day. Tried the cleaning cycle, print a test, no go. Printed a whole color page, with lines from the clog, still didn't unclog. I did this whole cycle one more time, still didn't unclog. Tried it a third time and it dumped so much ink into the printer that the paper was dripping on the third nozzle test. I took it back and got a replacement.

Printer #2:

Got clogging on the fifth or sixth day. Spent two or three hours trying to unclog the nozzles. Cleaning cycles sometimes actually made it worse. It never ever went away. I took it back and got a refund.

This all occurred using Epson Ink and Epson paper.

I replaced it with a Canon S800. So far, it's easier to use and much more frugal on ink. The prints are easily the same quality as the Epson. For my money, I will likely never purchase an Epson again. Just my two cents.

Hi, Don. Sorry to hear that you had so much trouble with your 820. I've had mine for a month and so far no problems. I used it a good bit at first but it has sat for over a week and I tried printing a pic and it was fine. I've read a great deal about the clogging problems with Epson in the forums. It must be a fairly common problem. Maybe it's individual printers. Should there be more quality control? Well, I love the output quality of the 820 and I'm knocking on wood that I don't have any problems with it. I hope that you have better luck with your Canon.

Epson 870.

I've had it for over a year.

Printed about 200 8 x 10's and 100 4 x 6's.

Epson ink.

I usually print in batches with periods of up to 5 weeks between batches.
I have had NO problems with this printer.

I have had the Photo 700 and 870. I now have a 785 epx. I have
never had a clogging problem with any of them and the prints are
fantastic.
I always turn off the printer when not in use, and usually print
something at least twice a week or more-even if it's just an
envelope.
I would love to print at 13x19 with the Epson 1280, but I haven't
convinced myself to spend $500 for it (yet).
Rick, there are factory refurbs for over $100 less than that. Both Beth and I have bought one.

Between me, my wife and kids we have 6 Epson printers. I will only use genuine Epson cartridges. Once in a great while I might have to hit the clean button but that is so rare and these printers are used heavily. We have three Epson 875DC's, 1- Epson Stylus Color, 1- Epson Stylus Photo and I can't remember what model my boy has. I am planning on purchasing the 2000P in the next couple of weeks.

I have had the Epson 1270 for 18 months now. Use the inks from MIS to refill my carts. No problem. I print lots of pics from my digital camera and they all look stunning. I leave mine on all the time. I also have an Epson 850 and that one is another story. Many clogs. I now only use this one for my kids school projects and text from the internet or word docs. It is great to see everyone has their own solution as to what works for them.

I have an 890 photoprinter, using Epson inks, always switched on. For the first few months of use I didn't have any clogs then one day the printhead cought on the edge of a sheet of photopaper (which might have been slightly curled up near the end). Since then, lots of clogs.

I use to own a Epson Stylus Color 800. I have it with me for about a year plus.

In the beginning, I thought it was a great printer. This changed when I notice when left alone (on or off) for more than several hours, it cleans printer head before start print. The cleaning cost ink (equal to money), and time (annoying when need that report ASAP).

With Epson ink cart. it frequently had to clean printer head (color or black) because of one or a few clog nozzles. Clogging become more pronounced with equivalent ink cartridge.

The printer might have been doom by the following reason:
1. Left printer on to avoid pre-print ink nozzle cleaning. Ink dried out.
2. Trying equivalent ink cartaridge.
3. Manually clean the ink nozzle

It died because of circuit board failure.--TVG riding a Train à Grande Vitesse. Life is fast.New: Cannon PowerShot G2
