Opening Disclaimer: I do not own a photo printer yet. I have no allegiance to Epson, Canon, or HP. The point of this poll is to test a theory I have about the clogging printheads.

There have been many rumours in this forum and elsewhere regarding Epson printheads clogging. I would like to know if you have experienced clogging printheads? And if so, do you use only new Epson ink cartridges or do you refill with some other manufacturer's ink or aftermarket non-Epson cartridges?

I have noticed that quite a few of the people in this forum refill ink cartridges and I am wondering if this is the reason that the printheads clog.

Thanks,--Bobby

I have an Epson 875dc. If I go a couple of weeks without printing a picture I always have to run two or three printing cycles. I use Epson cartridges.

I own a 1280. I've had it for almost a year now. Before that an 870, and a 750. I don't recall a clogged print head. I've always used Epson ink, and I leave the printer on all the time. There may be times I go a month without printing on it. I believe the key is to leave it on.

I own an 820, never had a clog problem yet.

I had a 600 before that, rarely had to run the ink cycle to unclog, never had a problem after that.
I use only Epson inks.

BTW, that's interesting about always leaving the printer on. I've read that you need to turn off the printer whenever it's not in use, as this "parks" the printhead and helps prevent clogging!

Epson 750 before, and some clogging. Now Epson 1280 and nomorecarts CIS and inkset. No clogging. Unlike Joel, I turn mine off. I've been told the print heads park when off, and I believe it helps. Maybe they park anyway, now? Glad on works for him. Glad off works for me. In either case, it seems to work. John

I have a 1270 and use epson inks. I have had some clogging problems until I started turning of the printer when not in use. I haven't had a clogging incident since.

i have the 780 since last july, use only genuine epson inks, turn it off when not to be used for an extended time and have never had a clog.

before that, i had the 600 and same thing, absolutely no clogs regardless of how long it went between print jobs (sometimes up to 2 months).

I do believe that epson ink is the best for their printers. I have tried many 3rd party ink and that came to my conclusions. There are so much variables about quality control for those 3rd party inks.

but the fact is - some people also report clog with the OEM ink.

another fact is - the 3rd party ink also clog and when it happened I have to admit it because I was me who chose to go that way. And when this happened, I just put a new clean OEM cartridges in and the clog disappear like a magic.

So my recommendations is stay with the OEM ink if you can afford. If you still get clog - the real bad one, the Epson replacement program will please you.

I've had the 790 (780 in US) since last August. Have had the odd clog from the Epson Black Cartridge, NEVER from the colour cartridge. Have tried a Print-Rite colour cartridge also no clogs with this.

I use the printer around 2 days a week, always print a nozzle test before a printing session. Had two weeks last August when I didn't use the printer but had no clogs when starting again.

I've had an Epson Photo 700 for the past three years (or so). I've used both OEM and aftermarket ink (I've never tried to refill). Other than a very occasional clogging problem, which I have always been able to fix with one cleaning-cycle, my 700 doesn't give me any problems. My printer is usually turned off unless I'm printing, or expecting to print soon.

I hope the new Canon 800 I have on order is as dependable.--jim

I have an Epson 870 and have been plagued with clogging throughout the 18 months of ownership. I have had one replacement reburbished printer which behaves exactly the same. I use on Epson cartridges and I almost always leave the printer on with sometimes many days between prints.

I agree with the guy who said that switching off is a good plan because it seems to park and flush out the nozzles, but I'm probably not going to find out whether this makes a difference because my new baby is a S9000.

One other factor which occurred to me whilst reading the S9000 getting started guide is that the printer shouldn't be close to a heat source. My 870 lived not too far from a radiator - maybe that isn't so good ! I'll be moving the room around I think.--Phil

Rich,

Now that I think back to my 750 days, or was it 870? Anyway, as I remember, the reason for not turning the printer off was that it saved ink. Every time you turn the unit on it does a cleaning cycle. There was quite a discussion on this forum about saving ink, and one tip was to leave the unit on and therefore limit cleaning cycles, and spare ink. I've had no adverse effects leaving the unit on continually. I would think the print head would be parked until a print job is requested, but will have to look into that further.

Another tip was to pull the power on the unit when the Epson status monitor indicated low ink. This would usuall reset the ink levels so you could continue to print until one color finally ran completely out. Of course that print would be worthless.

I have had the Photo 700 and 870. I now have a 785 epx. I have never had a clogging problem with any of them and the prints are fantastic.

I always turn off the printer when not in use, and usually print something at least twice a week or more-even if it's just an envelope.

I would love to print at 13x19 with the Epson 1280, but I haven't convinced myself to spend $500 for it (yet).

I owned an epson Stylus 720 for 4 years and never had any clogging problems. I upgraded to the Epson Stylus Photo 875dcs and, after a year and several months, I have yet to have any clogging problems. I will at times print many photos and at other times (for nearly one month) not print any. I use only new print cartridges.

I couldn't be any happier with my Epson.

Bobby,

Ive had a 1280 for close to a year. Have had the black norrle clog once in a while and had to run a few cleaning cycles. Up untill this past weekend I've used nothing but Epson cartridges. I attribute my clogged heads to leaving the printer on, lid closed, in a hot dry room for too long.

This past weekend I replaced the Epson cartridges with a CIS from InkJetArt.com--Jim Bennett

I have owned an Espon Photo 870 for the past 15 months. I leave the printer off when not needed. I have never had a clog on the color but just recently, just changed the black cartridge, I had a minor clog on the black, although I can't really call that a clog since running the cleaning cycle once cleared it. A clog, in my opinion, is when running the cleaning cycle several times doesn't cure the problem. When I do a lot of photo printing the black cartridge isn't used very often. So far I have used nothing but Epson cartridges, but that will change soon.

A few people here have tried to give Epson a bad reputation for clogging. I still say that that has been very overstated. Sure there have been some unlucky individuals who have experienced problems with the 780's but the overwhelming majority of Epson owners haven't had those bad experiencies. I am very pleased with my Epson and I will buy another one.--Kevin

Epson 600, then 750, now 1200, Epson inks, no problems.

I had an Epson Photo 700 which had to be abandoned due to cronic clogging. I did use non Epson ink and cartidges.

I would make the point that it is uneconomical to run a inkjet if you can only use the incredibly expensive manufacturers ink. I base the usefulness of a printer on how much it costs me to produce a print. If it is higher than a print shop (approx $1 in Australia for a 4x6) then there is no point owning a photo printer.

At the moment I have a HP 930C which I only need to buy a new cartridge for if it ever clogs. Until then I can go on using Aus$16 refills. By getting four 4x6 photos from a $1 A4 sheet of photo paper and adding the approximate cost of ink I can print for under Aust$0.50.

I have had my 1270 for about a year and have had the occasional clog that one oe two cleaning cycles would clear. About a month ago I had a clog with 2 colors that would not clear with 10 or 12 cleaning cycles. I finally had to replace a 1/2 full color cartridge to clear it. I turn it off when not in use. I now print a nozzle test before each printing session.

I bought Kodak 8660 and use it for anything smaller than 8x12 so I don't have to deal with the clogging any more than necessary. I now only use the 1270 for large format prints, panoramas or color text.
